gotta say after looking at the pics, that the 308 wins in the looks contest. i have seen many of each in the past in person, but side by side like that, the ferrari shows better imho.

Allan & Steve,
We have a very good group of FCA members here in Phoenix/Scottsdale, about 130 members and about 50 that are relatively active. We have a monthly drive that we usually have about 12-16 cars that show up. It is funny because it always seems to be different 12-16 each month. We just had our first concours and we had 50 cars in the show, the largest gathering anyone could remember in Arizona. Email me your mailing addresses and I will send you our latest newsletter and some info on the club.

Steve, You are in Scottsdale! You should meet up with the FCA region out
here for a drive or something. I know a guy here that has a pearl white
Jalpa he also has a Espada, great guy. I like the shape of the Jalpa
I just hate the wheels, they definately make it look dated. The Shape
Kind of reminds me of the last (1985ish I think) Panteras.

Larry,
I reside in Scottsdale Arizona. I have not seen another Jalpa out here.By the way I looked for your Jalpa in Monterey and then saw on your web site that it was'nt finished yet. I am out of town so I do'nt have access to the vin.

Joseph-Let me tell you, I have to clean those wheels after every drive!

Steve,

Very nice pics. The more I look at a Jalpa, the more I love the lines of the car.

Lawrence - Congrats on the purchase. Feel free to post pics of your Jalpa.

Very nice Steve. Now the real question, how do you keep those white wheels so clean?

Hi all, I have not posted for some time as my '91 348 was totaled last year. Well I took part of my insurance $$$ and bought a '87 Jalpa which I am right in the middle of a complete engine rebuild. So the Jalpa Jury is still out. I'm out of work so this was a way for me to still be in an exotic at a reasonable price.

I have the Road & Track, & Car & Driver roadtests and it gives mostly high marks for drivability & exoticness. The article author's opinions place the car in between a 308QV & 328 for performance, while the top end is not there it does get 0-100 quicker. I have a great parts guy at Stanford European in SF Bay area who has been able to pretty much get everything for me but I have to wait a week or so to import from Italy.

There were only 410 units produced from 1982~1988 with only 120 being imported into the USA. I believe these cars will provide to be very collectible in the future but finding someone to service/maintain(correctly)is a tough proposition,(go to a Lambo dealer and they say "what is that"). I have Ferrari in my soul but a Jalpa in the garage.

To Steve and other Ferrari folks with Jalpa's, I thought for fun I'd see just how many are still existing & in the USA, Steve/others what year and S/N is your's and where does it reside.

The owner of the Diablo must own a early model, and yes they do suck compared to the later models, just as a 91 Testarossa's brakes suck compared to a 99 550 maranellos. My biggest complaint on my 92 Diablo were the brakes. On my 98 Diablo Sv they are unbelievable.

Hey Howie,
You are right the Lambo in my opinoin is a very exotic car. I liked the 308 and Jalpa equally that I have bought both. The Lambo has a great sound to it. In terms of acceleration I feel the Lambo has the edge. Handling wise the Ferrari feels more nimble and the Lambo feels larger which it is. No major problems with either in about ten years of ownership. Both require the same type of up keep except I like the fact the Lambo has timing chains and not belts. I have always been able to get parts easily for both and I think the prices are similar. They are both fabulous cars.

I prefer the 308. Jalpas parts are hard to find. Dated in appearance, IMHO not as fun to drive as the 308. It felt slower than a 308 to me. I noticed much more lag too. Exterior doesn't appeal to me. Decent trunk space though. JMHO.

The following story may be of interest. But I am just as curious as everybody else to discover the true answer.

A local car magazine in HK recently released a VCD copy in which they paraded a line up of 6-7 private Lambo Diablos initially driving along in straight procession, and then depicted interviews of some of the owners for their personal views.

One Lambo owner expressed strong disappointment at the cornering abilities of the model, and even stronger disappointment over what he called the "totally insufficient braking power" of his car.

Is he right, or is he just being fastidious?

Peter, it was at least 7 or 8 years ago. I remember Joseph complaining to me about it when we walked by it. It was sitting outside his garage in the carport section of his house.

You know Joseph, Ferrari through and through. He doesn't work on Lambos anymore.

Ask him about it sometime. He might have pics of it since he takes pics on most all cars he works on.

My uncle owns a 1987 Jalpa, and i drove it during the time i had my 85 308 Qv. I remember the Jalpa seemed to be faster with a an awesome sound. Seemed to be a nice little car, and he swears by it, has owned it for years, drives it daily, weather permiting. Both cars are nice, just depends on what you like.

Mitch D.
Can you feel in the Jalpa's handling how the engine is mounted slightlty to passenger side? What were they thinking?

Bertone vs. Pininfarina? No contest. Urraco, Bravo, Silhouette, Athon, and Jalpa. I have never liked any of these shapes. There is somebody near my home with a Urraco. Can't imagine what he must go through in a parts search?

That would be Rocky IV, Mr Yee. I wait for that part of the movie, and then change the channel. I wish there was a way of eliminating the music while he is driving so you can really hear it.
Phil Collins also drove a white Jalpa in an episode of the always classy Miami Vice.

Hi Howie,

I admit I've never driven the Jalpa, only the 308 QV so I can't comment on handling , sound, or handling. The only thing I can comment on is the styling and to me the 308's stand up much more than the Jalpa.

The only time I've heard a Jalpa is in the movie theatre where Stallone drives one in one of the Rocky movies (I can't remember which).

Peter, I agree on the Silhouette. It's much rarer. I remember Joseph in North Van had one in his shop. I think it was orange in colour.

Lawrence,

The Jalpa is more exotic simply because there are fewer of them.

With regard to styling, the Jalpa does excite me more. Are the acceleration, engine sound and handling characteristics really subpar
to a 308 QV?

I like the Jalpa, I think its a good-looking car (I'm biased because of my GT4, they're both Bertone wedgies... ).

The real pick-of-the-litter is the Silhouette... If you can find one!

Although I've never driven one, I've always thought the Jalpa was an underrated car - the shape is awesome and really stands out in the flesh.

The Jalpas weren't very good cars compared to the Ferrari's. No parts, problems, engineering.

If you want a Jalpa stick with the FI 88-89 only. The earlier cars sell cheap* for a reason.

I like them, but they are nowhere close to being as useable as a Ferrari imo.

*Sell cheap meaning the price they really change hands at, not asking prices.

I prefer the 308 QV. I agree with Lawrence. The Jalpa looks dated. I experienced both cars. The Ferrari, I felt was a better car. I just liked the way it drove better???? Also, cause it's a FERRARI!!!!!

Howie, I have driven both. I have heard some things about the Jalpa, that it is not exactly driver friendly. Parts are nightmarish to source, and it is not as fast as the 308QV. The Jalpa has a really cool sound to it, and it is a fun car to drive. I think maintenance alone would send me to the 308...hey wait a minute, it DID send me to the 308! I do like how the Jalpa looks, but the 308 is a visual masterpiece to me.

Howie, I think that's debatable. I prefer the curvy sexy lines of the 308 much more. The 308's design is timeless whereas the Jalpa looks dated

The Jalpa's rear end IMO looks too big for my taste

If you can put aside the mystique and following of the
Ferrari marque, would you rather own the 308 QV or the Jalpa and why? The Jalpa is certainly more exotic.
