Thanks everyone - you kept me from making a mistake. I will be cancelling the deal today - makes me sad, but too many things do not add up.

Aside from that, technology and economics have finally come together to meet a desire of mine. I am writting this from a resturant from a notebook connected to a cell phone. Connection speed is 115 where before from a land line dial up I was normally getting around 28, sometimes just 19.

I really like this - now I can connect to the Internet from a beach, a park, most hotels and office buildings, and while driving a Ferrari.

Dave

Last thing I would want to do is ruin oyur dream but have the mileage verified.if you can.

Looking at the pics on the ebay link you will notice the No.6 digits are slightly out of line. it is a known fact that if cars are 'clocked' numbers can be out of line and the most common one to show it is the No.6!

The mechanic who worked on it last summer said it needed nothing. I was thinking if it became difficult to get someone to do the PPI, then I could skip it since the mechanic said he went over it completely just a few months ago. That was a mistake. Thanks.

Good point about the 6 years.

Have not seen it in person; looking for a good mechanic to do a PPI.

Starting to get a bad feeling about this.

Dave. Tom is right about those manual's. Those don't belong to that car.
This car has gone 6 years since the 30k so it is due now.
My feelings are that unless you are buying a car that you can concretly verify previous service, you should plan on doing the 30k when you buy it so there is no doubt.
Cars with such irrefutable records will probably command a higher price as a result.
Have you seen this Mondy in person or had a PPi done?
Do not buy a car on Ebay without a PPi.

Am on the fence about this one. Am I being very smart to buy this or very foolish?

The open and close dates on some of the service tickets seem strange.

Would a belt breaking cause the clutch to be replaced and the flywheel resurfaced?

Seller says, "In speaking with the previous owner, he informed me that he failed to replace the timing belt, which in turn broke causing the engine rebuild". To me this implies a major or minor service was done. However, can find no record of it. The following add up to about $12,500 which is the claimed amount spent on service. So I wander if a major or minor was ever done.

What are your thoughts, should I or shouldn't I???

Previous purchase date: 7/28/95.
From print out summaries from service place, not original receipts.
There may be NO original receipts (or copies of receipts) at all do not know yet. Was told there were receipts.
No mention of major/minor service where cambelts would have been replaced.
No mention of roof replacement, yet it is obviously new.
The scrape marks appear to be left front, right rear, so the doors should not be affected.
I thought the 3.2 was considered a quattrovalve could the manuals be correct?
Is it normal to get a little oil on the pan for a car not used that much?

Thanks for the info.

Not what I wanted to hear, but I would rather know the truth.

The oil leak does not seem consistant with no problems 3 months ago and about 500 miles since then. Will definitely check on this. Was relying on the mechanic's word, but he may have a vested interest in loyality to a long term customer or something could have happened in the last 3 months. Do not know.

I have copies of the last few years mechanical work. Will look at it in greater detail over lunch.

Also will check on things like the door. Seller said just the fenders were scrapped - nothing deformed or bent.

I had assumed they were the correct manuals and did not look that close at them. Wrong manuals does not seem consistant with an owner who used the car very little, but made sure everything was perfect. Also having the wrong manuals and making them appear to be the correct ones does not seem consistant with everyone telling the complete truth.

If this does not work out, will be very disappointed - had already planned a Christmas trip for it. However, would rather be disappointed than get a bad deal.

Peter, your site is very sobering.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!

Dave

Just an FYI - the books shown for this car are books for an 84/85 quattrovalve and a mondial 8 not a 3.2 mondial. Looks like a little oil leaking on the underside may want to check it out. The top while new is not original - which are hard to come by. The window might work with some work on the switch and/or a little tug on the window. just a few things I noticed

also check the side with the small bumper damage as it look like both the front and back were scraped - what about the door?

Congrats and welcome to the Mondial 3.2 club.

If you are interested in the kinds of things that can go wrong with these cars, grab a large serve of popcorn, a large coke and a box of tissues and take in the Service History section of my Mondial 3.2's web page http://www.fly.to/mondial

VZ: yes. Will have to unpack his card, but the name sounds correct. Never met the service manager just watched his people work. Sometimes one can watch a person work and get the impression that that person knows what he/she is doing. Felt that way at Ferrari of Scottsdale.

Use of the car is for an almost everyday driver. The t is better, but costs more to buy and maintain. Might want to save my pennies for the second Ferrari. Plan is to keep it in as new condition as possible. From the best available information I have, the 3.2 is one of the three most reliable engines that Ferrari made. There will probably be some issues in things like the roof leaking.

Now that the deposit is in can share more information. The car is:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&mfcisapicommand=ViewItem&item=1872693362

The last service was in August. The mechanic told me that when it left in August, it needed nothing mechanical or electrical. The engine has been virtually rebuilt. The electrical panel that normally goes out has been replaced. The seller said the window might need something as simple as a fuze or it might have to be rebuilt. He said it worked when it came into his lot, the mechanic said it worked in August. The mechanic said the only thing wrong with it was that it needed use.

I forgot that that year had metric tires a big disadvantage. Not for sure what I am going to do about that. The seller is going to replace the front tire at cost. Tire rack has them for $225. The spare is standard, not metric.

Selling details: do not know the original reserve. Before the auction ended, the seller lowered the reserve to $27,850. Called the seller several times after the auction ended. Asked him what he needed to make a deal work. He replied $27,500.00. I said done. I think I probably could have gotten it down to $27,300 or $27,400. Not for sure the best approach. Sometimes I feel it is best to go for the lowest possible price. Other times I think if the price is fair, it is more important to have the seller willing to work with the buyer. Any thoughts on this?

Anything I am missing?

Still have not found a good person to do a PPI in St. Louis.

Congrats Dave. I will be into a Mondial 3.2 as well in the future. I just came to the board and the help here has been excellent.

I would be interested to know what your experience with the car brings. Make sure you snap some pix for all to see. Do you plan on servicing the car yourself? Give us some vitals on the car(i.e. year, color, mileage, records, blah, blah, blah...)

Any mods intended?

So, Dave, did you, in fact, end up getting your new wheels at Scottsdale Ferrari ? If so, was Gary Simon the guy you initially talked with ? Scottsdale Ferrari turned over within the last couple of years or so; before that, was 'Cavallino', off of Acoma drive. I dealt with Gary and also their parts mgr, Jim Summers way back in '89 when I bought a 328 from them and found them to be easy/pleasant to deal with. Have dealt with them very occasionally since then(long way away from where I live), but I think whatever they have in the way of wheels will be fairly represented, just a matter of settling on pricing both parties can live with....

Dave: It seems that many Ferrari dealerships and shops have a very 'relaxed' attitude. I've been in many dealerships (most recently Fof BevHills) where you could walk around the showroom and shop at will, not seeing a soul. In Costa Mesa, I looked for 15 minutes before someone in the back came out and offered me some pizza! At FofHouston, I spent considerable time looking at Challenge cars all ripped apart getting overhauled. I've even heard that the assembly workers in Maranello aren't exactly speedy. Just part of the considerable charm of the marque.

If anyone has any driving or maintenance recommendations, email me off list since I will not have time to be on much. Also if there is any trick to keep people from taking a V-1 with the top down, let me know. Also any tricks to putting the top up and down. Also good non-dealer repair shops and sources for parts. My email address is in my profile.

Also some thoughts on Ferrari buying.

I am just a poor, dumb photographer, geek, and manager; not a member of the lucky sperm club.

About a year and a half ago when I first became interested, I talked to Matthew Jenson at the SLC dealership. He was very helpful. When I asked around about the dealership, I got mixed recommendations. Some people had good experiences, some bad. I spent some time in their garage; no one seemed to be in a hurry to accomplish anything. However, it could have been an off afternoon. So not conclusive.

Went to Cincinnati. In the phone book, there was a dealer listed in northern Ohio. Called them, gave them my deciding critic era, and asked about setting up an appointment. They said they had nothing like a 348; if I decided on a 360, they were not accepting anyone for their lists. Was surprised at how rude they were.

Work took me to Scottsdale/Phoenix. Heard that one car lot had the yellow 348. Set up an appointment. Drove 45 minutes to get there. No one was in the building could have taken anything I wanted. Most people do not want people in their garages, but I was able to get the photos of the 355 with the engine out. While waiting for over an hour for someone to come back, I explored their shop, and took the photos. Then we set up an appointment another day to test drive the 348. Called before I drove there, and confirmed. When I arrived, they were not ready. Ran errands for several hours, and came back. Helped them get ready. Test driving the 348, it broke down. They recommended I try the Testarossa since it would make a good daily driver, was more tossable than the 348, and got 24 miles per gallon. Found this not to be true. We set up an appointment for another day. Called just before leaving and found out the person was not in that day. Never went back.

At another used car lot, set up an appointment to look at a 355 and a Mondial.. The 355 was not running even though it had just came back from the shop (plus was overpriced by about $40,000) and research showed the Mondial was priced at about double the going rate.

At another high end used car lot, they tried to sell me a 360 spider for $280,000. They said it was a bargain since 360 spiders were selling for up to $360,000.

When I went to Ferrari of Scottsdale, they were very refreshing. Everything the general manager told me checked out no BS. Their consignment cars were overpriced, but everyone seemed honest. Watched their mechanics they seemed to know what they were doing with little wasted time. These people will get business from me.

I was surprised how much misinformation was out there and how unprofessional many people selling Ferraris are.

I can make rapid decisions affecting lives and million of dollars. However, I prefer to make informed decisions. As a result I do research in areas that are important to me. One result is that businesses that listen to my recommendations come out ahead. I may take longer than some, but I make fewer mistakes and get better deals.

On this car, we agreed on a price that was fair to everyone. So far everything has checked out.

I still have a deposit down on the replacement for the 360 spider.

Will also look at 12 cylinder cars to determine why people like them and if they make sense for me.

About a year and a half ago, I did not know the difference between a 308 and a Testarossa or a 360.

Today I reached an agreement to buy my first Ferrari, a Mondial Cab 3.2.

Unless something goes wrong, will have it on Dec. 13.

Even after I get other Ferraris, expect this to be a high milage keeper.

The Corvette or BMW are not out, just that I have an exact business need plus fun that I want this to fill.

Dave
