Living where there's plenty of snow and ice, I would get the Audi. If you lived in the southwest (or could have a winter car), the BMW might be better.

The bottom line is that you need to go with the one that grabs you, and justify it accordingly. If the Audi grabs you, get it and justify it on the basis that you need all wheel drive. If the BMW is what gets you going, get it and justify it on the basis that it has more performance than the Audi. I don't think you can really go wrong with either one.

Personally, I like Audi. I've had various Audis for 15 years, and I now have an A6 2.7T 6-speed, which I'm very happy with.

For me, living in Oregon, all wheel drive is important. And, for absolute performance I can drive other cars. After all, that's what the F-Cars are all about... well, the A6 could probably smoke either of my F-Cars, but we won't mention that.

I've never known ANY guy that got talent based on the car he drove. Is that really a consideration?

At 16 I'd get the BMW...like JRV said, you'll get more talent with it. I'm 34 now, so take it from a couple of older guys! LOL

Stylish and fun! Forget about BMW and Audi. You should get an Alfa Romeo 156 V6 2.5.

Handles much better than the BMW and Audi. Better balance and very fun to drive. And what a beauty then. Its also beating the out of the competitors (e.g BMW) in different touring car championships in Europe.

If you have the money, get an Alfa Romeo 156 GTA.

I'm not sure if you can get Alfas in US though. If not, you are really missing something.

Ciao

Brian, some way some how, get the S4, drive a had bargain. Let's put it this way, I've owned and driven a ton of exotic cars ( Ferraris, Porsches, Lambos) and my favorite car is still the S4. The manual is absolutely a blast to drive. It is deceptively quick and comes completely equipped with all the toys. And it still has a ton of unrealized potential that can be unleash for not too much money.

Damn, if you don't snatch up that S4 for that price, I might! ;)

Careful buying a performance car with 60k, it can be fine, or he could have flogged it.

Best!
Ben.

Okay, heres the deal, I just checked the price on a 2000 Audi S4 2.7 turbo, and I would be paying about $23,000. That is with 60K miles on it. What do you think about that as opposed to a 2000 A4 with like 35K miles on it. I know I could get that for like $18,000.

Heres the thing, I would love an S4, but I only have about 18k-22k to work with here. What kind of S4 could I get for that kind of money?? I certainly dont need to beat vettes off the line, but often times driving with friends we all end up at stop lights next to eachother, and, well, you know what happens from there. Having an S4 would be a beautiful thing, but I am just not sure I have the money for it.

Guys, he's turning 16. Does he really need a moster car that will take 'Vettes off the line? He wanted a 'tasteful and stylish' car.

Off corse, once he drives an S4 he'll agree with you guys... :D It's a beautiful thing!

I used to work for Dinan and have driven all kinds of BMWs. If I were you, I'd see if I could get a E36 M3 ('96 and later) for about the same amount of $. The M3 will put the others to shame. Just my $.02 worth.

I get European Car and couldn't help but notice a bolt in kit from PES which turns a 2.8L V6 into a supercharged 295hp beast. You would have a 5spd instead of the 6 of the S4, but it would be pretty cool. Granted there is more too the S4 than just the engine, but still it would be quicker than the S4 in a straight line I would guess considering it's blown and not turboed and has an extra 45hp I think (don't know weight differences to be honest). The kit apparently takes into account everything (injectors, comp, etc) and being bolt on it works with stock compression.

I'm rambling here, I just found it really cool. It was like $5G though so you would have to check out differences between a stock S4 and the A4 price wise you might be better off just getting the S4 right off the bat considering its other performance advantages.

Guys, unless you've driven a S4 with a 6 speed manual, this discussion is fruitless. Go drive one and then you'll understand. It's not the 0-60 times that are impressive, it is the ability to control the power delivery with the manaul box to light up the turbos as you wish, they kick in like afterburners. Pulling from 60 to 80 in third gear is astounding!! No way can you get the same push from a linear power delivery BMW 328 or even the 2.8 Audi.

The S4 and 350Z are two COMPLETELY DIFFERENT cars, two seater two door sports car vs four seater four door sedan... I would get the Audi over the BMW.. Audi makes better cars imho, better looking exteriors and interiors

What I meant by FERRARI was why is this topic in the Ferrari discussion? Audi's BMW's? Last time I checked there was a O/T forum.

Its fine to like nice things, I wouldn't be on this if I didn't. But its LAME to like them to impress your friends or a girl. Keep that up and you'll find yourself always trying to out do the Jones and become very materialist, IMHO.

The S4 is very nice but I would still go with the 350Z for its price

Brian- get the Audi. Especially if the 1998 is the old body style in the 3- series, I think it is. My girlfriend has a 2001 330 Ci and I had a 2001 Audi S4. I can say that I never had mine in the shop other than prepaid services. Her car on the other hand was in the shop all the time.

My girlfriend's 330 could not hold a candle to the S4... not even close. The 330 is a bigger engine but it is a pig! Build quality is much better on the Audi. And the handling was soooo much better. Audi just makes a much better car for a much lower price imho.

Get a used S4, a 2000 model should be in the price range, and will hold its resale pretty well. Good luck.

Audi S4! best kept seceret in motoring world. It will smoke a 328 easily. It can keep up with almost any exotics. You can take that to the bank.

I'd go for the 328 5-speed sport myself.

I'm especially in love with the 3-series convertibles.

Audi also make great cars, but they're a bit more, understated than the BMW (both in looks, and in drivability factor.)

Neither one sucks :-)

Best!

I am not sure what you mean by how will I buy the car...Ive been working for a long time and have saved enough for the car I want. I have loved cars for a long time now, and by the age of 9, I decided that I could have anything I wanted, as long as I worked hard and kept my grades up. I just cant decide between the Audi and the BMW.

As for OICYU, I trust the people on this board with questions like this. They didn't get to own a Ferrari by being stupid and bull shi**-ing their way through life. I believe that the men and women on this board are everything that I want to be as an adult. I simply cant make up my mind, and I figured these were the guys to ask. As for the girl comment, I want a car that people will be comfortable in. I like it when my friends drive nice cars, thats all I mean about that. I would hardly call it lame!

Brian,

Yup, I'm 17. As far as why I would pick the Audi... well... VW-Audi Group cars are just getting better and better. From the Jetta to the RS6... But my family has had both... in fact my mother refuses to drive anything else than a BMW (if it's European). Test drive both, and see which one you like better. So far I agree with everything everybody else as said about the Bimmer.

And if you don't mind me asking, how will you buy the car? The new Infiniti G35 Sport Coupe is a great car. Slower than a 350Z, but it has back seats and more class than the Datsun. ;p

Ok lets see this is a FERRARI website, wtf?

Also buying a car to impress a girl? LAME. Do you really want to date a girl because she likes your car?

Martin has the best answer. But to improve it even more get the new 350Z

I've always liked Audi interiors, but nothing drives like a BMW. Go for the Bimmer if you like driving feel, the Audi if you like luxury more than sportiness.

Get the BMW! It has got a much nicer engine, IMHO the best straight six this side of Aston Martins DB4GT. It's got better steering and a much more competent chassi. The Audi has got a sloppy gear change, a rubbery steering feel. Plus the BMW looks way nicer.

On the same lines of JRV, Audi (and VW for that matter) has perfected the art of making a car that looks the same going and coming. Its like they stuck two identical halves together and added an engine. I don't get it. Go for the bimmer, more class and a nicer ride all around.

Hey Guys, I really have a serious question here. I figure you guys are smart and have taste, so hopefully you can help me out here. I am about to turn 16 YAY!! but I cant decide what car I want. It is eiter gonna be a 1998 BMW 328i 5-speed w/ sport package, or a 2001 Audi A4 2.8 5-speed w/ sport package. I want to be tasteful, and stylish at the same time. Please tell me what you think overall, which one should I get?? I am kinda goin back and forth between the two, and now leanin towards the A4 a little.
