Nebula,

The car has character, especially with the dents. Nothing wrong with a few battle scars, right? :-)

Howie:

My thoughts exactly. The engine lags a little, but if I wind her up enough, she gets spirited. I love the handling: nothing like a 2000lb mid-engine car with Ferrari 308 SLA suspension to carve the corners.

In reality, the car isn't that big of a POS. For 120,000 miles, the problems I've had aren't that severe or uncommon. I'd love to put another grand into it to make it flawless, but I don't have the cash.

I use to chat on an X 1/9 site, and there are some guys with really nice cars, and some with turbo'd X's running 0-60 in 5 seconds.

Not a bad car, but frustrating at times.

I'll try to find a pic that I posted on the X site. She's not too impressive: yellow/black and lots of dents. But I'll try to get one up.

A true Monday / Friday car was my 95 VW GTI VR6.

- Constant creeks from everywhere
- The suspension had a mind of its own (that did not understand the fundamentals of handling)
- Blown coil pack
- Blown head gasket
- Two teeth literally fell off second gear one week before I sold it and one month out of warranty (meteralurgical analysis proved that the gear was hollow where it broke)

The new owner, the thickest/dumbest girl I have ever met, wrote it off within a month of ownership. The world is a better place knowing that car is well and truly dead.

Nebula,

I had a 1981 X 1/9 and I'm not ashamed to say that I really enjoyed her. Bought it
in rough condition for $ 600 from a guy who owned 4 of them. The mechanicals were good and drove quite well. She never left me stranded, even on the coldest New England mornings. Rebuilt the floorpan myself (rust holes big enough for a German Sheppard to fit through). Brought it to Maaco for a cheap repaint, and the car looked pretty darn good. Sold it with 144,xxx miles for $ 1750.00. Even made a few bucks on the car, but it did take a few months to find a buyer.I suppose you should expect the same.

A slow car, but handled quite well. The sound of the engine wasn't too shabby either, and the thing really turned heads. I remember getting plenty of thumbs up.

Post a pic if you can. :-)

No problem with rust, as I live in Sunny Southern California.

But I've heard the nightmare stories of these buckets and rust eating them alive.

I can't wait to get rid of my car now. I love it, but I hate it. Here's the stats:

1983 Fiat X 1/9
120,000 miles
Owned for one year, paid $1,000 bux

Repairs:

Day one (on the way home from the seller): Water pump blows. $300.00 repair.

Master Cylinder: $250.00
Slave Cylinder: $200.00
Second Water pump: $300.00
New Alternator: $200.00
Exhaust Gasket: $300.00

Current problems I am too broke to fix:

Driver Window fell off track. Will not roll up.
Front Right Brake pad fell off. I now brake using caliper on rotor method. Sounds wonderful when braking from 60mph.

NASTY shimmy at 65mph and above. Feels like I've got four flat tires.

I love this little POS, but I can't wait to get rid of it.

In 1992 I had 12 tickets in my '91 300zx and decided it was the cars fault. To force myself into compliance I bought a '92 Cadillac Seville STS. I drove it for 3 months and received 3 more tickets, one for 102 in a 55. I was having the same problem as the 300zx but I was driving a big, heavy front drive automatic and hated it.

Sold it within 4 months of purchase and only lost $1,500.00. Replaced it with a 300zx turbo and never looked back.

My 93 RX7. Too bad, so sad. My other 4 RX7's (79, 81, 83, and 85) were nearly bullet-proof (nearly). The 93 spent 5 weeks in the shop in 10 months of ownership, and I never even took it to the track... well, once, but I only ran a few laps, before I got disgusted with it. It never did run right, and the interior space was a total joke! Even less practical than my 308s.

But, I learned a few important lessons.

1) I never want to own a black car again (at least as a driver).
2) Highly stressed cars can be very fragile.
3) Turbo cars with undersized intercoolers make terrible roadcourse cars.

I sure hope the RX8 can rekindle some flames...

1987 Cad. It was yellow, should have recognized a lemon when I saw it. Bought it new, broke a push rod on its first day. Spent a month in the shop with 60 miles on it. Sold it about a year later, lost enough to almost buy a good 308 these days. Then there was the ...

Finally we got it fixed (again) and detailed and did not drive it again until some sap...er I mean person, drove it away. That's what I get for buying the 1st model year of a vehicle.

I had an 85 maxima also and like Chis said a lot of neat things when they worked. One thing is had was a voice that would tell you certain info. "lights are on" for example. Anyway it wasn't working right and would always say "right door is open" even when is was shut right. I let a couple of friends use the car and as they drove away I saw the right door open and close once then a second time. Then the car stopped and one guy got out and opened and closed the back right door. I was getting a real kick out of the whole scene.

1993 Mustang GT -- My first new car purchase. Under acceleration I kept hearing an undercarriage "pop" sound. After repeated discussion with dealer and others, it was determined that the car needed to have aftermarket sub-frame connectors attached to stop the popping. Sold it with barely 1,500 miles on the odometer and took a nice loss... thanks Ford.

Ah... i'd be 100% positive and confident in betting that i push my '93 sentra harder than every F-car owner here pushes his/her Ferrari... a new front axel, an oil leak repair (for naught), a new mirror, some new struts in the front, and three or four major repair jobs of which i cannot remember the names of the parts that broke or fell off or eroded or whatever... she now has 193,376 miles on her... 20,000 of which are mine, that i have put on her since February... She reached 110 mph once... and 106 on more than a few occassions... If you're in your F-car and on the Southern State, the Northern State, the LIE, the Robert Moses or the Oyster Bay Parkway and you see an old, red pile of dust BLOW by you- that's me... i thought my car was stolen a few weeks ago, in Queens... turns out it was just towed... we've since been reunited... she's my baby and i can't ever imagine letting her go until the day comes where she needs to rest in peace... i love her, we've been through alot together...

Um... ahem... staying on topic, though, when i was a little kid, my dad had a brown, Volkswagon Rabbit (i'm not sure of the year)... holy sh!t, i was so happy when he ditched it for a brand new '83 Firebird... (now i frown at Pontiacs, kowing how crappy they are compared to imports...)

1996 Mitsubishi 3000GT. It never broke, but it was slow and heavy and had no brakes. I got out run by a Sentra once. Front wheel drive rules! I would suggest FWD on any real "sports car".

I once bought a Maserati Bora during the height of the Italian Car market. I bought it sight unseen, but it was for a good price. When it was delivered, I realized it would take the rest of my life to restore it...and that it was not such a fun car to drive. I advertised in Hemming's..lo and behold I had a buyer in less than a mont and 8 grand profit as well...Whew...sometimes one gets lucky

1. '99 Saturn SL1 4dr - I could jog faster than it, and as under-powered as it was it was even more under-braked! Otherwise they are fine cars for the money

2. My F car ('82 GTSi) when I get around to selling it - right now it is the smoothest, best running car I have ever owned, but being an F car that will change shortly....

This may sound strange, the one I couldn't wait to get rid of was a 1988 Countach. Worst pos I ever owned. Reason: new car, 1900 miles in two years, three fires, four flat-bed receipts (one hour wait on the shoulder of the LA 405 fwy for a flat-bed WILL make you hate it!)

83 Nissan Sentra. My first car ever that was given to me in high school. There isn't enough room on this forum to name all the problems it had mechanically BUT despite everything from leaks to wheels falling off (really happened) I have to admit it never broke down. I ragged this car out so bad but it never quit. Finally I just quit driving it.
I had it parked in alley behind my house for several months. This guy walking down the street offered me $100.00 for it. Not even sure if it would crank I ran inside and grabbed the keys. Hand them to him and crossed my fingers. Sure enough it cranked right up and away he drove smoking like crazy. Sometimes I miss that car and I have to admit it made me respect what I have now. When I begin to complain about my current ride I think back to the old days.

For me it was a DeLorean.
Nice to look at, which was often as it seldom ran correctly. Nice handling for a tail-wagger (thanks Colin Chapman!), but an uninspired engine w/130hp. Everything you touched in the interior had a cheap 1980's Detroit feel. The electricals and systems had a home built low budget kit-car quality that would make Lucas look good.

Martin, obviously there was a problem there. Lotus' are famous for cooling problems but they can be overcome by troubleshooting the system and making sure your carbs are adjusted right. It took me some time but my Europa can withstand 90 degrees F outside, stop and go traffic and hold a 90 C temp. It wasn't that way when I bought it however!! How was the car other than the 30 mile cruising limit?

My 82(?) (ugly square) Dodge 600 convertible. A K car with the top lopped off, with all the grip and performance of a horse-drawn carriage. I finally traded it in on my current pickup when neither door would open and the steering rack disintegrated. A true piece of junk, from design to road. The car dealership literally had to come tow it out of my driveway, because it refused to start for the last trip.

Good riddance.

forgot to add a car that i regret buying but still have for sentimental reasons : the '77 mgb. my dad bought it for me in '84 after i managed to display sufficient grades and responsibility (little did he know) at college. for nearly the same price, i was advising him to get me the 280sl pagoda top from the lady next door (which he finally bought for my mother 10 years later for much more....).
i drove that car like a demon since i had always had either american or german cars that could be driven hard. not the mg. over the course of 3 years of school, i broke and replaced nearly every part on that car. it left me stranded more times than i can remember - i think i single handedly paid for the flat bed truck used by the local british car garage.
but i met my wife while driving that car so.....and its worth so little now anyway that its hardly worth selling. it is up on stilts in a sealed garage and maybe someday, when all the other mg's in the world have disintegrated, mine will be worth something. then again, maybe not.

1) 1995 Nissan Altima - replaced most components more than one time. Every brake job needed new calipers, oil leak at rear main seal ($1100 repair) reoccured twice. Electical issues, left me stranded more than a few times. TERRIBLE CAR!!
2) 1989 Chevrolet Camaro - 5 starters in one year. easily spent twice the value in repairs in the last year of ownership.

My '71 Triumph TR6. GREAT fun when it ran... which was a rarity. However it did have a superb ventilation system (8 inch rust holes). Gotta love those British cars!

So what did I do? Years later I bought another one and kept it for 11 years. It too is now gone.

My first car a 75 Trans AM had rusted out on the rear windows and the result was a trunk(s) full of stinky water, the back seat passengers where impressed when if I hit the brakes hard, a wave of rusty stinky water would flow into the floor boards up to the front

67 Firebird convertible just a slow (326 engine) bad handling POS that flexed and shimmied its way down the road

75 GT6 typical Triumph with english engineering

68 Corvette conv, so poorly designed parts would break after replacing them, nothing worked right, squeaked, groaned, and massive body flex on rough roads

David,

I always loved the GTV6, but know the reliability negated the fun factor. Still, a pretty sexy machine.

Alfa GTV 6...After owning 17 Alfas, the GTV 6 was the only one purchased new. I should have known she'd be trouble when the turn signals and gauges quit less than 5 minutes after picking her up at the dealership.

Although fun to drive, one major problem after the next...The most unreliable, expensive to maintain Alfa of the lot.

1986 Saab 900: slow, uncomfortable, broke regularly - and it was always something expensive.

In the spirit of the thread "Regrets, if any....",
What car were you happiest to get rid of and why?
