I keeps sounding more and more ugly. Is this car to remain a "farm vehicle" forever? |

John - If the guy imported the car as a "race car" he would have to enter it undere a TIB (Temp Import Bond)...Its a special type of entry. He has to export the car after 6 months, then he could re-enter it. When the car enters the country the importer has to post a bond for 2X the value + duty. If the car is not exported within 6 months customs will charge liquidated damages, which basically means the cash the bond. So, it will cost him twice what he paid for the car (or it's appraised value) and any applicable duty. They know if it was exported because it's all in the computer. After 6 months from date of entry if the computer does not see a matching export it will raise a red flag and generates a print out and they come after you. Same deal for "show car" entries. I've done a lot of these - also a few years ago I did something for Lambo where they flew cars in for a IROC type of event accross the US...forget what they called it...

If it is the older Galenderwagen (sp?) convertible with two doors, I think I have a model of it. My mom was working for MB back then already and I think it was actually the firsts model I ever got. Damn parents, get me a model of German Jeep, where were their priorities? |

John, to your question, contact the FCA. They have a person that is an expert in conversions. Your friend can probably bring the car through EPA/DOT another way. If he has to export it first and re-import is, so be it. Bahamas is just a short way, or Mexico or CND for that matter. When re-entering the US get the conversion process started. Giving it is a one of a kind you have to be carefull. Might require crash tests. What SUV/Jeep is that supposed to be? The G-model? That is sold here in the US. Just few but available.

John; Typicaly they go by VIN # not by name. If the VIN is not in the computer, then it would be flagged as not a US car and that is where you could have problems. I have seen people buy wrecked cars and "switch" the Vin plates (illegal) but done. Some states may be a bit looser on it. The other way is to get Used Car or New Car plates for it. Some guy's are small partners with a little crappy used car place and use the plates, then no registration is required. |

My friend has this special convertable '93 Mercedes truck/SUV sort of Jeep/Land Rover thing that was imported as a farm vehicle. It is quite rare and non-existant in the US. It is already here, so it can not be imported as a "show and display" car. Ignoring emissions (which he has solved), how can he go and get a title for the car? He is willing to produce a bill of sale for it. Now, that relates to another guy who lives near me and used to post on this site. He imported a 348 Competition (not Challenge) as a race car. If he has a bill of sale and takes it to the tag office and appiles for a title & tag, how do those idiots know it does not have DOT/EPA releases? Futhermore, the Benz guy can put a 300E label on the back and say that's what it is. Does anyone know if this will work or have a better plan? |
