Hey Byron,

Yours (in black) looks mean/mad! (white is hard to clean). And I love your seats (a conversation item on itself).

Yes, it's very easy to change the panels. Just R&R (2) hex nuts inside(door jam area) & 4 hex screws outside. The problem is finding the side panels with no slates. I have yet to find a source for the "355 style" side panels. Koenig might have them perhaps.

Mine came with it(as well as the original) when I bought it 2 years ago(call it a bonus I guess).

If you want to meet, let me know. I give the car a work out at 280 during Sunday morning around 7-8am (dont tip the cops pls :-) ).

Chuck,

I wanted to correct your spead sheet on the 348 Serie Speciale. I own #93. Here are its stats:

1.) Manufactured 10/1992 (1993 model year)
2.) Red with Tan (Carbon Fiber Seats)
3.) TB
4.) 10,300 miles
5.) It was originally sold by Ferrari of Houston, and still is currently in Houston.

Noel, I like your SS... the white speedlines look great. Is it easy to switch out the "cheese-graters?" By the way, you're in the SF area?... I'm currently working up in the bay area as well (San Mateo area)...

Martin,

Yes that is my Ferrari 348SS but it now has the original side panels (cheese graters) & 18" white Challenge wheels. I switch the panels every now and then whenever I get tired of the looks. BTW, the #5 SS now has 23k miles.

Chuck, For chassis 94001, when I talked to FoW I was told it was #20. They also indicated it was the car used to debut the serie speciale at the LA auto show and it had appeared on the cover of Cavallino (possibly the 4/94 issue, not sure if the date I wrote down was for the magazine or some other aspect of the car.)

This car brought me the closest to purchasing (or at least pursuing the purchase of) a Ferrari. If I could only get my practical side to take a vacation.

There were also 15 1994 speciales. I think they are all TS's. These rarely turn up for sale. I believe (though I can't swear to it) that these 15 are in addition to the first hundred and have their own series numbering. Perhaps someone out there owns one.

Martin,
My Speciale (#92) was built in October 1992 (date on door plate) and has VIN 95853. It is 1993 model year. I looks to me like all of the Speciales may have been built in 1992, although some are 1992 model year and some are 1993. I had started a catalogue at one time based on various ads, articles, and postings (it has not been updated for several months):
registry

If anyone has any other info to add to this table, I would be interested in knowing.
Regards,
Chuck

I am lost how the titeling works on these cars. I had a built 12/1990 TS that was registered as a 1990 Ferrari.

All 348 Spiders are 1994 Models or 1995 Models. If they were built in 2/1993 they should have been 1993 Models. If the car was built in 12/1990 it should have been a 1991.

somebody please explain that!

The Challenge Cars were produced through 1994 early to late First one 97869, a TB (my records) and the last record I have is a 98906 from 1994, also a TB

Noel,

The factory challenge cars were '94's, not 93's. They were actually late 94's. 32 TB's and 13 TS's were made, about half actually raced.

Justin,
great feedback.
However I have to correct you in some of your remarks that are wrong:

1. the crome shift knob is optional on all 348s. They all came with the black ugly thing.

2. the Bosch Motronic upgrade was done in 1990, not 1993. There is a cut-off serial number at #0086XXX when it was changed.

3. the lower skirt body color matched is done in 1993 to all the things I can read. So many have them re-painted anyhow that it is hard to tell (see my car)

Her eis a brief run donw:

Upgrade 1. The motronic and some other little stuff in 1990.

Upgrade 2. The change from Ts to GTs in 1993 for the 1994 model year. Came with the Spider intor. Skirt painted, suspension upgrade etc.

There were some special models that had earlier the upgrades:

factory Challenge cars (1993)
Series Speciale (1993)
Competizione (1993)

One other thing. Contrary to popular belief, the car WILL NOT melt if exposed to rainy conditions! But the targa top will probably leak

Jon another thing the 1989 to late 1992 had black gear knobs and after that they changed to Chrome.

Also, Many earlier cars have been changed to look like the later cars. If you buy a Sypder you do not need to worry about this, because they were the last and had all the mods by Ferrari on them.

I will post the chassi numbers for each of the years when the mods were done. So when you look at the car you can tell by the chassi number what true year it is. Remember the later the better. Either the GTS or GTB.

On the GTS and GTB and Spyder their was more leg room inside. The bulk head behind the seats was shorten to allow the seats to goe further back.
I found this out by Ferrari when I sat in a early TS with roof behind the seat - no leg room, but the GTS with roof behind seat still had enough leg room. I am 6'5" tall.

Justin

Jon,

I own a late 1994 348 Spider. It took me one full year to read up and study which of the 348's were best to buy.

The 348's between 1989/ early 1992 had.
TS and TB models
Black front, rear, side skirts
Black horse badges
300 Bhp
Bosch 2.5 Montronic System
Battrey in engine bay, short track

The 348's in early 1992/ early 1993 were updated.
Chrome horse badges still badged as TS and TB
Red Colour coded front, rear, side skirts
Battery moved to front wheel arch

The 348's in late 1993 / late 1994 were updated again.
Re-badged as GTS and GTB
320 BHP, larger air plenum chamber
Wide Track rear end with bigger anti-roll bars and new suspension set up.
Engine slightly lowered for better stability & handling.
Upgraded Bosch 2.7 Montonic system installed
Battery still in front wheel arch
Still colour coded rear, front side skirts.
Still chrome horse badges.
The centre front grill was updated. had a black trim around the edge.

Some Background Information on F348 Series.
F348 Series ...............................
The F348 Ferrari Spyder was launched in late 1993, running alongside the evolutionised F348 GTB/GTS. It was the first two-seater spyder sportscar made by Ferrari since the 365 GTB/4 (Daytona) Spyder last sold in 1974. It was the first mid-engine two seater Spyder produced by Ferrari.

There have been many engineering developments and design refinements to F348 series that have improved its Performance, Handling and Comfort.
In addition to the modifications to the body configuration of the F348 Spyder, there had been significant technical changes that enhanced the performance and road stability.

Engineering developments included a transverse gearbox with revised ratios for quicker acceleration and a free flowing exhaust system for higher power output. The wider rear track with an improved suspension system assured better handling and manoeuvrability.

In 1994, the evolutionised F348 GTB/GTS cease production with the all new F355 GTB/GTS. The F348 Ferrari Spyders were still produced alongside the F355 series.
The late F348 Ferrari Spyders were further evolutionised by introducing the F355 characteristics onto the F348 Spyders as a development platform for the all new F355 Spyder that was to be released in 1995, when the F348 Spyder cease production.

This information was supplied to me from Italy at Ferrari. I live in the UK and have family in Italy, my wifes side.

Please note that prices for left hand F355 are coming down and are nearly same price as a good, late spyder.

Remeber the 348 Spyder is the best of them all, the last to be built and run longside the F335 TB and TS.

Regarding the single and double plate clutches, I have been told and read that Ferrari installed single and double clutches at random. Thats what I have been told.

Remeber a Ferrari must be driven several times a week. I use mine all season, except in salty road conditions. You must get a Ferrari with full service history.

I bought my Left Hand drive 348 for 32,000 sterling pounds a year ago and I have just been offered by a main dealer 39,500 sterling pounds the reason being is that the spyders are worth more on the market and not many of them about.

I hope this information helps.

Justin

I recently purchased a 348 Spider and love it. I would suggest looking at a couple of different ones. You would be surprised at how different cars are maintained. I had looked at various in the L A area, which were o.k., I had then flown to San Francisco to see a car that was very abussed, and then wound up buying a vehicle that was very clean in Arizona. Good Luck

Aside from the normal Ferrari check list (30k completed, complete service history, etc.), the four biggest updates on the 348 line were:

*Bosch 2.5 to Bosch 2.7 ignition (1990)
*Double plate to single plate clutch (1991)
*Delco alternator to Nippondenso alternator (1992)
*Wider track (1993)

If you search the archives, there are several additional threads on this subject.

Lastly, the two pre-purchase books I would recommend are:

*Original Ferrari V8 (Keith Bluemel)
*Forza #30 (348 buyer's guide)

They are beautiful cars, good luck with your purchase!

Buy the newest one you can afford and it's is a good idea to avoid the twin plate clutch cars.
They seem to have problems with the exhaust temperature e.c.u's which can shut down the injectors on one side of the engine or the other. Electrical problems are common, especialy with the climate control system, the control panels are prone to failing. Early cars had alternator trouble..be sure the car has had the update done. Also check the window operation..yes all 348 windows are slow but make sure it dosn't take until next week for the window to go back up. Interiors in these cars seem to take a good beating like on the side bolsters on the seats and the door pull handels. Make sure that the cars has been serviced propperly by a qualifeied shop, and has all papers and bills to prove.

Sometimes if you give it a lot of gas, then slam on the brakes and turn left hard the gas tank can come off.

I am in the process of buying a 348 and would like to know if there are any "bugs" that I should be aware of. Is one year better than another?
