My center vent is the last piece I need to clean this goo off. I have successfully completed all the center console pieces and the door handles. The left and right vents appear to have been done before I took ownership of the car. So my question is this: I assume the white symbols on the vent that signify that the vent is open or closed will also come off when I clean it up. What are people using to replace these symbols?

Someone else here on the F.C.
used Go Jo hand cleaner and said it worked pretty good.

I used dry pwoder soap and a grease sponge from the kitchen (don't put it back in the kitchen guys, the wifes realy get mad :-) )

My detailer, Eddy has perfected the way now with sand paper and finally finishing them with a special plastic paint and clear coat. They look like brand new. He is doing them for a friends 355 Spider right now.

sanding first with 400 paper, then finishing with 2000 wet.

The heat and sun here in Florida are hard on the original finish. I used denatured alcohol and fine steel wool to get the worst off and then soap and water to finish. I painted them with black satin and they look like original. The A/C vents pust pull out and then the movable parts snap apart. I also had to do the defroster vents and the trim below the rear window. It is a little work, but well worth it. No more black gunk on my clothes.

It is the dressing people use on their dash/console/interior that causes that. If you will replace the pieces and then only use water to clean them for then on it will not happen again.

If it was me/mine, I'd cover the plastic with leather and be done with it. That rubber turns to goo and makes the biggest freakin mess I've ever seen.

This is a copy of the E-mail I sent David, hopefully everyone will benifit from it.

I did remove the black rubberized goo from the plastic pieces in my 348. It's not that bad - just tedious. Do not use nail polish remover on any of the plastic pieces as it will eat through the plastic. WD 40 did not work. Neither did Goo Gone. What I found to work the best is 100% alcohol (Not 70% that you buy at the grocery store). In some cases I used steel wool as well, however if you do use steal wool you will need to paint the pieces. The plastic pieces around the gauges and the temp control I did not need to paint. The piece around the gear shifter and the ash tray I did paint with a flat black. I did not paint the vents either, they looked great after I rubbed all of the goo off and put armoral on them. The nail polish remover was used on the door handles and the seat-back-rest handle (They are metal). Everything turned out perfect in fact it looks better than the original pieces when they were new. The paint looks great and was very durable - No chips. No sanding needed just went through a lot of rags.

I think you would be able to get away without painting. I started with the center pieces and that is why I ended up painting them. Once I figured out what worked on dissolving the goo, I was home free.

For some crazy reason this seems like it is a problem with the 348 only. Has anyone else had the problem on another model?

I guess all this snow and ice on the east coast has made my brain a little slow.

Thanks for pointing me to the bottom of the screen. I already found the thread.

Thanks.

Try the search feature at the bottom of the page. It works really well for me.

I an trying to find a thread that talked about the best way to clean or replace the dash vents and center console pieces when they get all "sticky".

I just purchased my first F car on Wednesday ( 348 Spyder ) and the only thing that it needed was to have the "sticky" stuff cleaned.

Being new here I am not familiar on the best way to track down previous threads. I tried the research button but that did not help.

Thanks for the help.
