Cold air scavenging back up the short pipes can warp hot valves.

Jeff,

I'm not sure exactly, somehting to do with the lack of back pressure. Anyone else want to chip in here?

Ben, what type of valve issues could be caused by open headers? I've heard the idea that a hot exhaust valve that is cooled down too fast, like shutting off an engine after running with open headers or no headers at all, can warp. What other concerns are there?

Adam, I just have to hear that. Do you have any sound files?

My TR is Very open. It has very "Clean" cats, and a very open racing exhaust from Koenig. Everyone that hears it esp on the track love it. It is louder than Ch cars, and sounds like a true old 12. It is even better in the Lincoln Tunnel. It makes a Tubi sound like the car is turned off.

I was thinking of starting it up with the entire system off, as I've had it off 2x in the last 30 days or so (it normally sits on the garage floor, only put it in to pass - ya know, yeah). I was told that it should not be fired up with nothing behind the headers due to the complete absence of back pressure and the great possiblity of valve issues. I have heard from others that the sound is awesome, but it wasn't something I was willing to experiment with (too much possiblity of damage for just a few mins. of heaven).

I recently removed the entire exhaust from my TR for various reasons. For some reason I wondered what a Testarossa would sound like with open headers. All I can say is WOW! At idle it's pretty smooth, but blip the gas and man oh man does that baby want to rev! I'm wondering if maybe my cats had a flow restriction? It revs so freely and quickly now. Has anyone driven their Ferrari, for what ever reason, with opened exhaust just for kicks?
