Terry,

Thanks for all the info... i researched Ferrari membership and after considering the cost, i find i'm forced to hold off until January (possibly February)... The book i think i can wing, i have a friend at Barnes & Noble, i'll ask her to discount it for me... she brings me regular issues of Forza as they come out, but because i have so little time to read a magazine, what with all the other things i cram into my schedule, Forza is more like playboy to me- i just like it for the pictures...

i'm assuming once i join FCA, i'll receive a newsletter indicating when and where The Beautiful Machine is being held, in PA...?

i really appreciate everyone's input on this, thank you, very much... i see that if i just continue hanging out here (you're stuck with me), i'll learn more and more...
Again, thank you...

DES
The difference between a Spider and a Cabriolet is the same as the difference between a Berlinetta and a coupe, there is not any difference. Join your local region or chapter of the FCA, I believe the NY region is rather active. There is a book "The Complete Ferrari" which is very inclusive of most Ferrari models and although not a very informative book it has a lot of pretty pictures and will be able to show you some variations. Back issues of Forza will help also This magazine does a good job with their Buyers guide and usually shows the differences of each year and model. La Bella Machina is held in Pensylvania, I believe. That should be closer to you and from the pictures I have seen it is a very good place to see various Ferraris.

Side mirrors, markers, Euro specs, US specs- ARGH...! Terry, thanks for all the info- believe me, if i could make it to a Ferrari show, i'd be there... if i can find one closer to NY, i'll certainly try to arrange my schedule so that attendance will be possible...

Yes, Jim, that's what i saw (however if it was a convertible, the top was up at the time, so i have no idea...)
Now, if a spyder and a cabriolet both constitute, er- "convertiblism" (LOL, that's SO not a word), then what's the difference between a spider and a cabriolet...?

DES,
Yes spider refers to convertible top. So does Cabriolet. In the case of the Mondial it is a Cabriolet. Maybe someone can shed some light on why, but if you look at most of the models that are indicated as Cabriolets (or Cabs) their counter part is designated a Coupe (e.g. 250 PF coupe/cabriolet or Mondial coupe/cabriolet). In the case of Spiders they are usually are partnered with Berlinettas (e.g. 355 Berlinetta/spider). Then there is Barchetta which indicates that there is no functional top usually a tauno(spelling?)(166mm Barchetta) cover only except in the case of the 550 Barchetta where it has a top, but it is not designed to be used frequently or at high speeds. Barchetta means "little boat" it was used to describe the first Ferrari 125s (if my memory serves me correctly) and stuck with all cars that did not have tops. Your vague discription of what you saw does sound like a Mondial, it does appear stubby in the front compared to other Ferraris and the rear looks (is) long to accommodate the back seats and trunk. There are some Great Ferrari books that will help you with identifing, but go to some Ferrari show (if possible) like Cavallino Classic in florida, FCA nationals in Florida this year, Concorso Italiano in Monterey or any number other regional concours and talk to owners and enthusiasts they both love to point out the differences of similar models.

I like the fact that DES is able to ask for help and admit he doesn't know everything....yet

Rare trait today.

I also like that you guys gave him real answers and didn't treat him poorly for asking.

Fchat is returning to its roots!!!!!

Des, there are many small things that you will pick up on after studying diffrent models. I studied 308's and am still learning after 15 years. In addition to other things mentioned there are also diffrences for euro cars and U.S. cars, such as the side mirrors and markers etc. on 308's.

DES: Christmas is coming up, you should get someone to give you Keith Bluemel's "Original Ferrari V8" and "Original Ferrari V12" books, they don't carry every model up to the present, but they will help you to identify the basics. All of us start out the same, with the interest in Ferrari as a whole, the street cars, the racers. You don't see them every day, particularly up close, so you get to know the differences by reading and learning.

Pretty soon you can spot differences in wheels, grilles, lights, trim, whatever, and you will be able to identify a particular car in a split second glance. If you want to know if that 308 is a glass body or a steel body, it might take a bit longer, but there are ways to tell. You pick it up. It doesn't matter as much what year the car might be, until you're seriously interested in buying one.

Just have fun with it!

LMAO, sorry, Magoo, i like most exotics 'cause of the way they look, as a whole... the little details escape me until i get to see the car more than once or up close for more than 30 seconds... i didn't get to see the tail lights, i only got to see the side of the car and the front (for a split second)- i mean it was still a Ferrari, it wasn't moping by...! Judging from the conversations i've read on here, i'm assuming that a Spyder is a convertible, right...? (see, i don't even know that, for sure)... i'm really in the dark when it comes to these sorts of things...

On my lunch break, today, i saw a grey Ferrari, going the other way, as i sat at the light. The front was really short (stubby, almost) and the back was really long... i think it was a Mondial, but i really have no way of knowing for sure...? Anyone have any clues and, in general, how can you look at a picture of a car or see one in the street and not only know which model it is (if there are other models that look similar) but also know which year it was made...? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated, i feel like i'm always the only one who has no idea how to tell a car...
