If you are gonna do any type of networking, wether its home, work, or school, get XP professoinal. XP home has some problems whenits hooked up to networks. This is what the guy who does thenetwork at my school told me when i was ordering a computer. |

First, O/T. Next, it's a very, very simple setup. I have a Linksys setup with the cable modem connected to the wireless router and my primary computer [desktop] connected to the router as well. Notebook runs off wireless. Printer is connected to desktop and shared across network. If you are running Windows XP Professional - there is a wizard to setup a small office/home network. I'm not sure about XP Home Edition. It took me less than a couple of hours including loading drivers and setting up the network. Not sure what someone would charge you to do it for you. But it shouldn't be more than a couple hours of service for a simple install. I get about 100 ft indoors [same floor - not sure about through floors]. |

Whats the range of the wireless network? Can it go from a basement to upstairs (I guess that would be considered covering 2 floors)?

I run one in my home office with 5 computers attached. Its a D-Link setup, I bought everything at Office Max. I set it up myself, it works like a charm. I have 3 computers networked via cable and 2 that are wireless networked. Internet is via a cable modem. Speeds to the net on all machines are very fast. Setup was extremely simple. Load the software, plug everything in, it pretty much just automatically worked. I really did nothing in "setup", just followed the simple instructions and it worked right out of the box. You dont need a consultant. Terry |

In LA. the computer consulting costs vary from $30 to $50 per hour. Plan on at least 4 hours. If JRV does it, plan on $125 to $150 per hour and at least 30 hours. Once he figures out where the plug goes. |

I know I can install this myself, but does anyone have an idea about what it would cost to have someone come over and install a wireless network in my house connecting 2 desktops, a laptop, and a printer. And running off cable modem?? |
