Hi Ken, have them check the longer headers as they tend to crack, the shorter ones are usually fine. The mufflers tend to rot out as well. New exhaust system is $5k - $10K. Make sure the spare and both tool kits are there. Early BB's had some sort of valve/valve guide(?) problem so make sure it doesn't smoke after it has run for a bit. Have them check everything made of rubber. I have replaced almost every rubber part on the car and some of the bits, like brake lines, can be pricey. Leatherique can fix a lot of the interior problems.

My BB is black over black.

Good Luck

Ken, the black bottom was standard on the 365GT4BB and an option on the BB512 and BB512i. My BB512i is solid red.

Ken: The $10,000 was in addition to the $27,000. BTW: The price did not include the Tubi headers and exhaust.....the owner worked for Tubi, thus supplied his own......I do not know how much that would add to the price.

Does anyone know if the black Boxer trim on the bottom half of the car was standard or an option for the Boxer? I see cars with a solid color and some with the black boxer trim. Which is original?

Henry:

Was the $10K interior replacement included in the $27K, or in addition to? Your car sounds and looks beautiful. I really like the all red exterior. Also, I sent you an email regarding your car and with a quick couple questions.

I just bought an 83 BBi this summer. The previous owner did everything, in 2002, that James S. has mentioned, including new accumulators, rebuilt distributors....both fuel and ignition, belts, hoses, seals, tensioners, Tubi exhaust and mufflers, shocks, springs, bushings, engine detailing and painting, all fluids, etc., etc. He also had the trans, diff., and clutch checked and adjusted....somethings were "ground and polished". The car only had 17,000 miles on it.......I couldn't believe that all this was done......to the tune of $27,000. He had the dealer take out the interior, and redeyed it in its entirety.....to the tune of $10,000. WOW!!!!!!

That is why I bought the car. I have had it most of the summer, with no problems......just got in and went.

As far as the tires, they are the Michelin brand, with a metric size. They were brand new. However, I did check, and will be able to buy the same tires at my local Tires Plus store.....priced about $250 each.

I believe, that the previous owner, was trying to turn this into a Pebbles Beach car, and then had to sell. I feel that I lucked out.

For a BB:

Clutch, fuel sender unit, water pump and the entire original fuse panel. And remember, almost any real engine work is engine out (water pump job $3400). They are great cars, but you are wise to be informed in advance.

I just completed my 30k service, and had to replace everything in the fuel system - pumps, filters, pressure regulators, injectors, etc. In addition, I was able to track down an original muffler/resonator system. Shocks are knocking, so I suspect they will be the next project, but as the others have suggested, this is to be expected in 20-year old cars that have collected dust instead of miles. That said, it is a great car - a combination of the Dino's handling and the TRs power. I plan to drive it a great deal (now that I have spent too much on it).

I have had a boxer since the mideightees. If it is stored properly, ina heated airconditioned garage, and it is started every once in a while and allowed to run...if the fuel in the tank does not sit there for a whole year...as happened to mine recently...clogged one of the fuel distributors and was a mess trying to fix. Fuel pumps, fuel filters go bad...had to replace those in mine. Clutch goes bad...and shocks...mine was and is a garage queen though I am trying to drive it more often now that those problems have been corrected.. with less than 5000 miles on it, I had to restore the fuel injection system, replace the shocks and the clutch. It is a wonderful car..I love it.

Ken, I just traded for one and am almost finished sorting it out. As you locate Boxers you like, contact Gerald Roush at the Ferrari Market Letter and D.ck Merrit at the DOT and have them run the serial number on each one. Gerald can give the sales history and mileage history of each car and D.ck can verify if the car is DOT legal. The gray market conversions of the cars were all done differently by differnt shops. Amerispec and Trend Auto seemed to do the best. Get a copy of Forza Boxer Buyers guide to see the differences in the three models, 365GT4BB, BB512 and BB512i. The drivetrains of Boxers are sound with very little problems. Check for recent cam belt service, be sure the transmission shifts well and the clutch don't slip. Make sure all the cosmetic parts are there as they are hard to fine. I had a heck of a time finding the parking lights for mine after I started to convert it back to euro-spec and found out they had been removed when the rubber bumper strips were added for the DOT conversion back in 1983. Just like buying any 20 year old car, be sure everthing works and have a PPI done once you narrow done your search
