Easy way to tell a Boxer from a 308 at a side glance: The 308's have the beautifully sculpted side air scoop (ala 246 Dino) and the Boxers do not... they're smooth on the sides in that area.

Yeah DES, the 'douche' that painted that black trim would be Ferrari. If you really know the lines of the 308/328, you'll never mistake a Boxer for one. The most obvious difference is the lack of an air intake running down the door.

It will say BB512 or BB512i. It's on the back, driver's side. But if you see a 308 and boxer side by side, you'd notice how different they are.

You should go to WWW.ferrarina.com This is the Ferrari North America site. It has a fairly comprehensive data base for current and past (but modern) models. You should spend some time studying each models. A lot of pictures there.

Look for the 1976 308 section. Boxer trim paint scheme was an option at the time.

DES,

It has been noted, in Forza magazine and else where, that a Boxer is often mistaken by casual observers for a "lowly" 308. :-) Easy mistake since both have similar styling cues.

I said "some" early 308s have that boxer paint scheme. Those are fairly rare.

The pool of knowledge, here, just blows me away... Thanks, Willis...
It took an entire 8 minutes for someone to answer my question... Now if only the DMV... nah, it'll never happen...

Willis, do the later Boxers look the same as the one in the picture...? i saw a 308 GTB on Saturday and it didn't look like that one... The back looks different- higher maybe? i'm not sure... i'd like to see that exact one painted all red...

DES, That lower black exterior treatment is also known as the "Boxer trim". I believe only the later Boxers (last of the 84's?)were painted in one color. Some early 308GTB/GTS and GT4 were painted with the same color scheme.

As for that stick, the gate for the boxer is not on the central tunnel. It is to the left and slightly lower than the tunnel. The photo gives the illusion that it's right on the floor.

Oh, man, the car looks sweet...

except- who's the douche who painted the bottom half of the car black...? Wouldn't it look better if the whole thing was red...? Not so humble, but it's still just my opinion...

Also, why does it look like the stick is on the floor...? That makes me nervous...

I only know of the 348. The same car Rob refers to. I've heard it needed some love, but it sounds like you're prepared to give it what it needs. I wasn't aware of the turbo Boxer, I might need to go take a look at it.

I plan to be in Dallas in January and made arrangements to look at the 512BBi they are advertising. Does anyone know anything about this car?

The red one with 355 wheels? I thought it was a beautiful car and with a Norwood turbo. I also heard a relatively inexpensive intercooler could be added to increase the HP quite a bit. I think that's the car that had either a valve or piece of spark plug drop into a cylinder that required repair. I'm not sure if they had to replace the piston. Last time it was for sale about 6 months ago they were asking like $37-38k. Most turbo F cars go for about 20-30% less than an original.

Jim,
Yes, I went to Norwood to see both a 348 and a twin turbo 512. I bought the 348. Very cool car. Do you know anything about it?

Jeff, were you in town looking at a certain twin turbo 348? :-)

I can't wait until Norwoods finishes that black 288GTO conversion they've got going. It's gonna be a beast! I need to drive over there in a few weeks, time for an oil change.

I went to Norwood Autocraft in Dallas. This is an incredable place!! They do some outlandish work there. I saw (among others), multiple Testarossa twin turbos, Boxer Twin Turbos, 348 Turbos, An AWESOME P-4, Several of the 308/328 highly modified cars and a fw "in-house" projects taking place. James Patterson, proprieter, was very kind and knowledgable. He took the time to show me around. Next time you're in Dallas, I can recommend a visit.
Jeff
