Yeah I am talking about the long rod in the back of the car. They sent me one but it did not reach the mounting points. I had to make a 90 degree angle on one side and another bracket for the other side. One mistake that I did was not painting them and they have rusted. I installed it a few years ago and by now they look like crap. One day when I am not lazy I will get to it. But in the end it is all worth it.

Ok, here we go...

Argyle,

I just talked to Dennis over at Borla the same gentleman you spoke to, apparently my old contact has left the building :( I gave him alot of hell about how one year ago this system was availble (by special order, not ready made off the shelf), AND how Borla has prided themselves on custom products AND how "20 years ago when they started out as a manufacturer of exhaust systems for such "concours classics" as Rolls-Royce and Ferrari cars and have evolved into the premier manufacturer of todays performance vehicles for the street, off-road, and racing." (quoted from their website)...

He said he had no clue there was a demand SUCH a demand for this, and I explained to him that recently one of the 16157 systems was up on ebay that no one we knew bid on since we thought they were still available. So he WILL be getting back to me on what it will take to get them to make up one (or a few). Now can we get a FEW TR owners interested so that they could make up maybe 3-5 instead one just one? I can't promise anything but I've gotten him to commit to asking the powers that be what will it take.

I have emmisions testing here in CA (once every other year) and I plan to swap the stock system in for say about a week then back out again as needed to comply...I'm guessing 2 hours each way for the swap...worth it IMHO, let's keep that a secret for now.

BillyZ-

I'll guess you aren't talking about the mounting to the headers but rather the spring mounts near the tail lights? I've seen all kinds of funky mountings including the use of home-made brakets and plumbers tape (yea how TACKY), did yours not come with a long mounting bracket/rod? Mine bridges the gap rather well. If you want pics let me know I'll show you what was supposed to COME with the system. Or is yours just not fitting right, please elaborate...

I would love to have the same setup as Ben, but they don't make that system anymore. What should I do, should I buy the #14623 and get the test pipes from Nick. Will this setup be comprable. Anyone have this setup

I have the same setup as Ben's TR. Let me tell you that this modification made the biggest difference in power. There is just so much horsepower lost in the stock exhaust system (not even considering the weight). And the car sounds a hundred times better. Took me two hours to install. It was very simple.
Ben did you have a problem mounting it to the old exhaust mounting points? I had to fabricate something so I could mount it.

Ben,
First of I would like to thank you for all the info you are providing me. I did call Borla and the system they told me about was #14623 ($3700), they said this was the only system they had for my car. Then after reading this post I called them about #16157 and they said they no longer make this one. This was an old system that was probably made for the European market due to the lack of a Cat. He tried locating one from his distributors and warehouse, but was unsuccessful. He even tried looking for a used one. Is your system a polished one because he said he thinks that model was not polished, anyway I am thinking of getting the #14623 and getting test pipes from Nick. What do you think, will this setup work. The Borla system will cost me about $2000 and the pipes are about $600 for the pair. I wish I could have gotten the #16157 because it is cheaper and I don't have top buy the pipes. Do you have emission testing where you are, because I do in NJ and what I was planning is getting the pipes and leaving them on till inspection time and then removing them and putting the Cat back on. Nick said it was very easy to do and will take about 45 mins and can be done in your home garage.

Let me know what you think

I have a 4 muffler no cat (or precat) system, it has pipes that connect straight up to the headers from the mufflers. It comes out to 4 indiviual tips (no combining of any exhaust, whatsoever). My tech loved this as it almost replicates the use of the "analysing pipes" which are no longer present after removal of the precats. I assume this is designed for the EURO cars it is called Borla system #16157 (last I checked was about $3400.00 from Borla). Also this system weight in about 40lbs, easly lifted with one hand, the stock system when we removed it (precats, cats, piping, muffler and tips) had to weigh at least 120lbs. (big and bulky) took 3 guys to move it nicely. I can send you some pics and a drawing that they sent me on it if you'd like.

They also have system #14623 which (from the drawing I also have) looks like it would bolt right onto the cats, I think this is their standard CAT BACK (USA) system, it has 2 mufflers, one for each bank of 6 cyls, which proceed to spilt tips (4 tips for 2 pipes).

I think they also make a single muffler replacement for the stock ANSA, but I'm not sure.

My problems so far are that 304 SS that they use is a great metal but doesn't like being repeatedly heated and cooled, after some time you will get heat stress (looks like rust but isn't rust) around the connections/hardware. To solve this I had the entire system coated in a propeitary (HPC) aluminum/ceramic coating that will resist heat to above 1300degF. Keeps the whole thing cooler. This is also a problem on some other exhaust systems (think about how you see motorcycles exhausts discolored). I have seen some others paint theirs black.

My other problem is completely asthetics. The 4 cans are so small and sit so low that you can't see them at all thru the rear grill. They sit down by the bumper. I'm pretty sure the 2 can system sits high enough that you can see it thru the grill. I don't remember how the Tubi sits in the car (altho I know it's designed like the 14623 system) but I would assume either would have more visual effect. Now when you are behind me you see the clutch heat sheild thru my grill (altho I may remove that one day).

My next task (read within 2 months) will be to try straight pipes with NOTHING between the headers and the tips. I just really want to see how it sounds. Recently I saw/heard an 87 TR with full precats/cats and no muffler...from the cats out to the tips, that was nice and loud.

With the right setup it can be a DIY job to switch, I did it without even jacking up the car. I will be doing the switch back to stock for Concorso and then hope to try the stright pipes then probably back to the Borla. Ths only thing to watch out for is that you will probably destroy your test (analysing) pipes if you pull the entire thing out as one piece, as I did.

Which Borla are you looking at getting? I've seen at least 2-3 varities from them already. The one that looks like the stock system I wasn't too impressed with (just my opinion).

Hi, All
Thanks for all the feedback on my exhaust system for my 91 Testarossa. I spoke to Nick and he is a very knowledable person when it comes to Ferraris. I have made a decision as to which exhaust system to get. I was considering Tubi, Borla, Stebro and ANSA. I have decided to get the Borla because I can get a new one for $1800 in the box with the factory warranty. I found that the Tubi will run me about $3500 new or $2650 used. I found that a new ANSA would be about $2800 and a used one for about $1500. I did not check Stebro because I read a lot of negative feedback. Borla was also expensive at $3780 from Borla directly, I was able to get a 50% off gift cetificate for $215, I called Borla and told them I had this certificate and if I can apply it to the exhaust system for the TR and they said yes, thank God. I will be ordering the Borla in the near future , I am waiting for the person selling me the certificate to mail it to me, I just mailed him the money order today. After I install the Borla I will see how she performs and sound, at that point I will make a decision as to whether to get the bypass pipes from Nick, I probably will get it, anyone can tell me if I should. I also ordered a K&N filter for the TR and my brothers 348TS Speciale.
