Thankyou all for the input. #2 was questionable to me as well. The last one I looked at was an 88 328 GTS that was repainted in the past. It had the black seam sealer and the black underside lip on the lid. It was satin smooth paint though, not undercoating. Maybe a personal preference on the texture at the time but figured it was probably black originally on that car. Im debating weather or not to put stone gaurd on the rocker to save the paint but Ill consult with the bodyshop on maybe a eurathane paint down there for durability. Colour wise, havent decided 100%. Most likely silver again to go with the original red interior (which will also be redone soon). Still thinking though, resale red is always nice, then again yellow on a B is nice too but the red interior would have to go.

I have seen original cars both ways with regards to the underside of the rear lip. I cannot see Ferrari making a variation in finish between the GTS and GTB cars however I think that the finish is related to the guy that was painting them that day at the factory.

David, I agree with you. The *underside* of the lip of the engine decklid on my 308/QV is black. Not just painted smooth black, but a continuation of the "undercoating black" that's inside the decklid.

Tazio,
Are you sure on #2? I have owned a 308 GTS and currerntly a 328 GTS and the underside of the decklid on both was black...not body color....
This has been the case on every other 308/328 I have seen as well...

Here are the details you need Paul:

1. The seam on the C-Pillar is done in black urethane after the car is painted. Urethane is the sealant used around the glass and is the worst stuff you will ever want to get on your hands. It sticks to EVERYTHING!

2. The underside of the lip goes in body colour. The seperation between that colour and the engine compartment takes place around where the rubber sealer on the body that keeps water out of the engine bay.

3. The rockers go body colour without any stone chip guard. You can ask the painter to paint this section with paint that has additional flex agent to keep it from chipping. There is a perfect line running under the doors that will seperate the paints nicely and it would be IMPOSSIBLE to tell it was ever done.

4. Heat extractors go body colour however it is not at all incorrect to have them black. There are variances in the production and the Italians hardly have the spot on accuracy of the Germans in this prdoduction detail.

5. The whole front chin spoiler under the lip goes in black. The best thing to use here is a thin coat of stone guard. Wurth makes an excellent paint for this application.

Good luck with the re-paint...what colour is it going anyways? Drop me an e-mail if you have any other questions and I can give you my number and you can call me on it.

Merry Christmas

Im waiting in line to get my 308 painted, maybe a 2-3 week wait before it gets slotted in but I have some questions regarding small details. Where the C pillars meet the quarter panels, there is seam sealer. I have seen this sealer painted and in black regardless of body color. Should that seam be sealed before or after painting? On the decklid rear lip I have seen the underside of the lip painted black. The entire strip that holds the plate lights all the way across above the tail lights and so on. What is correct? The rockers below the lower body line have rock gaurd on them and are body color on mine. Should it have rocker stone gaurd and what color should it be painted? Black or body color? The last one I can think of is the heat extractors on the fenders. Im assuming they should be body color, not black on a 79 GTB, correct? Oooops, one more question. The front valance has a square protuberance just beyond the spoiler, under the body, should the paint become black under the leading portion of the chin spoiler lip? So there is no body color on the underside of it exposing the square lump that hangs down? Thanks.
