I disagree Randy for FerrariChat.com. Maybe it's because we don't have a major problem yet with non-Ferrari people just causing trouble for the heck of it. I think most of the flame wars start as miscommunications, I think even the threads gone bad have some good content, and who am I to judge when a thread goes bad. Where do you draw the line? I think it's a better policy for users to know they have complete freedom, but to respect it and behave as they should. I think my policy works better for the 99% of users and they appreciate it. When those 1% do come in here, then the "herd" doesn't like to be disturbed. They will get challenged head on through intelligent responses and logic, not censorship.

Do you think deleting a post will keep them from posting again? Do you think I have the time to delete all these posts. When I start it's just going to get worse and worse. When I experimented and tried to remove one user last month, I ended up in more trouble because they created 4-5 aliases and posted dozens of messages.

I agree with removing from the publics eye and it will be if I move it to the "Threads of Shame and Flame". It's at the very bottom, hardly any one will read it except the users involved, and who uses the search functionality anyway? How many times has car wax been brought up.

I don't buy the comment: "we're adults and so we're more mature".

Funny. I know "adults" who have never grown up and do the same stupid stuff they did back in high-school (go out back and drink or smoke dope during work, etc...). Just because one turns a certain age doesn't mean they get smarter...

Speaking of work, I gotta go...

I'm in favor of moderation. And I believe as a site grows, you can direct maturity or lack there of through moderation. With other sites - moderation can weed out flames and at least keep arguments out of public eye or at least cease for them to continue. Otherwise - as you'll soon find out, without moderation, there will be spill overs from other sites and wanderers who just want to start crap with anyone out there because they have one thing that we don't - time.

With these types of threads, even if they are contained in their own forum - it still looks bad, as onlookers and possible new users, or even those users out there that lurk but never post - its a large deterrant if the unwarranted posts aren't contained. But another issue is - they are archived, which IMO is a bad implimentation. Say if I want to discuss an old thread - it will never reach public eye unless someone refers to it in a new post. It will only stay in the archive and never be back on top. So if you post this week and you get a response next week - you are SOL, cause you'll never see it unless you go through the archives.

Good idea Rob. These personal wars are between a few. So they can be fought there. I bet they won't last long.......

Gonna try something new for awhile, I'll place those wayward threads into the "Threads of Flame and Shame Archives..." folder. Eventually it will be located at the very bottom of the thread list. If your thread disappears, then since I don't delete, that's probably where it went. Maybe we'll see a trend of participants after awhile?

I agree we don't need a monitor just don't make any additions to non Ferrari topics, and they will go away. This is a site for Ferrari information not other brand automobiles.

I agree with Mark; that in life we need less regulation and rules. But there's a point where the strong arm of reason can improve life. Perhaps if the more wild and pointless flame wars were nipped in the bud, those with a pesonal problem will think twice and phrase their attacks in a more polite way. This is a Ferrari site, not an ego inflation site. Or at least it used to be.

Up at same time. Still getting garage squared away for the new F-Car. Suppose to be here literally two days before Xmas. Yesterday the trucking company called and said heavy snow & rain in NW made them lose a day so now it's down to the wire. Don't want to go off topic...

I agree with Frank and Bruce. We're adults here. You are in control of what you read. No moderator needed. Simply move on if you don't like what you're reading. It's not that hard, guys.

Mornin', Bruce!

i agree with frank 100%, we are all mature adults(suppose to be) and this chat is titled general discussion, if a thread is not suitable and is a bothersum (sp) to someone else, just move on..its simple, yes some of the arguements are hilarious, as well as boring, just move on..no moderator is neccessary.....

Rob does a great job and this site and fine just the way it is. Yes, on occasion there are heated threads, but I often find them interesting and humorous. If anything offends me Im only a mouse click away and move on. There were some previous inappropriate posts and we as members through consensus elected not to respond to those posts. The problem quickly remedied itself. Lets just keep it the way it is. My $.02

Take it easy Guys!
We are all mature enough to handle a Ferrari so we don't need any moderator!

Just ignore the bad boys or girls and they will just walk away quietly.

Rob is the moderator
I think he's doing it
right, You can't start
deleteing threads. Then
he will be hearing it
from other people. You
can't win. So leave him
alone, is he not doing fine?

Who would be the Moderator? Who has time? Im thinking some of the people who would volunteer might be the types who cant wait to be cops an teach others a lesson!
Lot of the heated debates start with people reading too much into posts, this medium has its limits. No voice inflection an the readers personal outlook biasing the authors post.

Mr. Newman, You are one of the boreish chaps I was refering to. Have you considered stuffing a sock in your mouth until you have something to say worth listening to? You appear to be the instigator to the inteligent observer.

self moderation, gee why didnt I think of that? Because it DOESNT WORK! Tell it to JRV, A guy with verbal diahrea that doesnt listen. That type of thread sould have been tossed and a friendly warning sent to the instigator(s)motivating them to refocus their energy in a more productive way. I agree that things look worse lately. Why? who knows? Maybe some changes need to be made to clean it up. Im not looking for lovey dovey posts, just not useless wars that repel people.

Mr. Topman, You are quite the pathetic bore. You posts speak of a person in need of help. It's doubtful you will find the serious help you need here, in case you were wondering.

And I might add that a servere case of selective filtering of reality has afflicted several of you boreish chaps.

Mr. Topman, You must be who these chaps are reffering to as the undesirable element, it appears that drinking is only one part of your problem (drugs also perhaps?) after reading your other various posts here and there. When afflictions strike as evidenced by your writing, it is sometimes advisable to seek profesional help, before it's too late.

Hey paul..

I need more cops giving out speeding tickets
I need more bouncers at the strip club
I need more referees at my beach volley ball game

I guess my point is that smart adults don't need more rules.

I feel sorry for grown men that don't have enough control to deal with the 5% of random silly stuff you're going to get anytime you go out in public.

Take a chill pill dude.

P.S. you have a good point about business that want to sponsor this site. But I think they all understand that the web is wild-west and if you want safe sanitized content... advertise in Road&Track, becuase they never take chances. Don't want to lose the advertisers. That's why all their car reviews are so blan and always positvie. That's why people come to web sites...to mix it up a bit and say whats really on their mind.

Why dont the threads that go real sour get tossed? Bickering about insignificant subjects drives people away. telling someone not to read a thread if they dont like it isnt the answer. Some things need intervention, sort of like how rob did today. Is it so wrong to delete a useless thread? I dont see the harm in doing so. There have to be some sort of rules in place. I dont see any except censorship with little red dots.
