Dr TC, I'd love to see that when you complete them. I've got photos of Ferraris that I've been collecting now for a few years. If I see an unusual/rare model and have my camera, I take pains to get a snap of it. It was my picture of the Cal Spyder on the FerrariChat calendar.

You guys are going to think I am really out of my mind when I tell you this.
I am a 308 nut. The first Ferrari I ever saw was a yellow 77 308 GTB. It was 1981 and I was forever hooked. between then and about 1985 I would happen across several more and I would always take a bunch of pictures. They were all different colors such as marrone, blue, yellow and black. Believe it or not only one red one ended up in my photo album. Anyway, I was searching thru ebay one day a couple of years ago and found an unbuilt monogram 308 for sale. When I was growing up I was an avid model builder and was actually quite good at it. I had a big tackle box full of brushes and little tools. So I dug it out and bought the 308 model. Then I got an idea, I decided that I was going to build an exact replica of each car that I photographed as a kid. I bought 6 more of the same 308 models on ebay. Now this is the kicker; I took the body parts to a patient of mine who painted most of my cars. We looked up the paint code on the cars in my pictures and ordered a 1/2 pint of each paint (a total of 6 different colors) . He painted the bodies for me including one metallic black like mine. I have been working on them for the past year. I plan to display the models in front of the picture of the car that inspired it in a display case. I'll post pictures when I am done.

Paul, I saw a Miura die cast 1/18 scale at one of the outlet stores a few weeks ago. I don't remember seeing a Miura (of any kind) anywhere else. Is the 1/18 scale die cast Miura difficult to find?

Who made a 1/12 Lambo Miura?? Fujimi made a 1/16 scale.
Not many large scale kits get made anymore.
For a large scale kit to get made the tooling is very expensive now. If it's not a sure fire big seller in Japan- it will never happen.
MG Models makes resin kits of 1/12 scale Ferrari.
Model Plus also makes some 1/12 kits.
A resin kit is a big challege to build if you're used to the injection molded kits.

That kit is the Monogram 512 TR with Tamiya mythos front wheels and tires. Yes, I bought two of the mythos kits to get them! When the car was touring the Texas model contests, it was wearing the original factory rims, but after retiring from competition, I couldn't resist making the change.

Hey Carl, nice 512. Is that the Italeri kit?Are those 512M wheels also? I really need to get back to building my kits instead of collecting them! ;-)

Mitch,
That I know of nobody made a large scale 355. There was a 1/24th scale, but that came out just before Ferrari closed the deal to have Mattel control ALL their licensing, and its a pricy kit now. Try to find a (gulp!)diecast 1/18 355, and strip it and repaint it the color of your choice.

I agree: where are the plastic kit models. 25 years ago I built a 1/12 scale Lambo Muira. Took over 100 hours including the painting. I have been looking for a 1/12-1/18 scale F355 for over a year. I am willing to pay $100 for the kit.

Horsefly,
Yes, the diecast and pre-builts are taking over the scale modeling scene. I used to subscribe to a magazine called "Scale Auto Enthusiast", but it now covers so much diecast stuff that I lost interest. I spend months and years working on my models (The 512TR in my profile took 9 months to finish), and agree that instant gratification is the driving force. If you want recent releases, check the yellow pages for hobby shops in your area. With licensing being what it is, Ferrari is very selective about new scale models coming out, and I find it's best to go to ebays toy section for the scale F-cars I want. if you are interested in scale auto communities, check out the model car list http://www.themodelcarlist.com/ the list also has a yahoo group with 800+ members from around the world.

Try www.phoenix-model.com. I think they still carry Protar models.I bought one of I think every Ferrari model they had available at the time. I'm still looking for a rare 1/24 F355 Challenge by Fujimi, but have most of everything else!

Good Luck!

What about the older Ferraris? Any of those in current production? I have also noticed the much higher cost of plastic models compared to the glory days of the 60s when a typical 1/25th scale car cost about $2.00.

Arlie,

Tamiya, Revell, I'm not sure if Fujimi still make Ferrari models. The hobby shop here has a fairly large inventory on them as well as diecasts.

I've seen the Tamiya F50, 360, TR and all the F1 cars in stock

But I know what you mean. It's the fastfood mentality of wanting it now IMO.

It seems to me that scale PLASTIC model KITS are somewhat fading from the retail discount stores and toy stores. I guess it has something to do with the "I want it right now" attitude and nobody wants to actually BUILD a scale model any more. So the "MADE IN CHINA" prebuilt cast metal cars are taking over the scale model world. Does anybody know which PLASTIC Ferrari models are currently available in hobby shops? I have a 250LM somewhere in storage that is still unbuilt. I bought it 7 or 8 years ago from a hobby shop that had alot of older kits. But that was then. What is available today?
