About the 959, I found one for sale at a dealer in Bedford, NY:

http://www.huntingridgemotors.com/cars.php?cat=exotics&carid=64&subcat=porsche

Hope the link works. Anyway, they don't discuss the legality of the car or the price. Looks good though...

The XJ220 and the 959 are both legal in the
states for "show & display" purposes nowadays, with a mileage limit of 2500 miles per year thanks largely in part to the efforts of people like Bill Gates and Ralph Lauren plus other enthusiasts that got together and helped push it through.
Gates bought a 959 new and brought it to the states, and tried to convince the gov to accept a computer simulation of the required crash tests, the gov said no way and was going to crush it,but i think in ended up in an impound yard for years, the only legal 959 in the country from new belongs to Otis Chandler got it in with a museum/display visa for 10 years i think,it's one of 25 959 sports built for the U.S. as "race cars" but when they got here customs saw the carpeting and full leather covered rollcages and sent them back.:-(
The Feds call them "limited use/limited impact" cars, the law applies to cars 25 years old or less, with "historical or technological significance".
I got most of this info from Autoweek jan-8-2001 issue with the XJ220 on the cover,as of that date the cars certified for importation were:
XJ220
959
BMW Z1
McLaren F1 (although i believe the one in R&T was brought in earlier and had 7k miles on it when it appeared in the mag)
Pug 205 Turbo 16 (Group B,the killer B's :-))
Bugatti EB110
Maybe since then the laws may have changed a bit allowing more mileage and almost certainly different cars.there's a link but i don't have the time to check it now,
www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/import/ShowDisplay/
DOT ph#202-564-4000
again, this is a few years old but it may help.
p.s. last weeks Autoweek had a silver/maroon(burgundy?)959 for sale at just $275k (*grin* but can't afford it:-() so with 959's going for about 150-200k plus conversion costs it seems about right, pending PPI of course:-)
hope this novel helps a bit.
I wish everyone here at F-chat and their families and loved ones a HAPPY,HEALTHY AND PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR!!!

actually, don't wish for that - that would imply some insane rate of hyper-inflation given that he's the richest guy on the block by far.

"may we all be successful enough to potentially afford a 959 someday" might be a less destructive sentiment ;-)

Brian

The numnber is a 959 and the dealership is Keuylian Motors. It's between La Cienegia and Santa Monica.

BTW. the 959 was created to compete in the Group B rally series that never happpened. Ferrari created the 288 for that same series. Those two cars started the HP/speed wars.

The Jag XJ220 was at a dealer about 8 blocks from ferrari of Beverly hills on wilshire blvd. start at wilshire and rodeo. walk on wilshire towards ferrari of Beverly hills, and its about 7 or 8 blocks from ferrari of Beverly hills. The silver porsche is there too! the porsche was built for bill gates before any were allowed into the US. He had loved that car since highschool and paid lots and lots of import tax.(more than he paid for the car itself) Hope thats helpful. Sorry i dont kmnow the model numnber, im not much of a porsche guy.
Happy New Year!

Impressive list...it is like mecca out here isn't it? FYI, East Bay BMW (Hendrick) has a pristine M1 in their showroom, not for sale just for gawking...it's from the owners private collection.
