Wasn't that something? 70 degrees or so. Bright nice sun. I swear some of our best weather happens in the 'winter' months. Warm enough for a top-down blast in shorts, but not so hot you sweat at stop signs! Today's looking good too, there's a persistant layer of fog, but it'll burn off in a few more hours. Personally, I love the fog too. Best! Ben. Best! Ben. |

Great picture Ben. Now that's an angle I haven't seen before. You're right - nothing beats QoL up here. I mean, the bay area sucks, no one wants to live here, everyone should stay out! :D ;) --Dan |

GOD I love it here! http://photos.joshskidmore.com/browser.pl?Action=ViewImage&Gallery=00-12-03&Res=1000x750&Image=05.jpg Something about being perched on the edge of the world may make people a bit crazy, but it also seems to imbibe in us a sense of our own mortality, an almost erotic sense that we should go and CHERISH this day we have, with each other, to the fullest we are able. I truely feel home here, nestled amoungst the majesty of the redwoods at the edge of the world. (PS; that's my friend Jon and I, (I'm on the left, flying the plane), between the towers of the Golden Gate bridge, facing out into the awesome pacific, with the Marin Headlands and Pt Bonita lighthouse on the right.

California is beautiful... when I hang up the spikes, my wife and I are planning to retire in San Diego. But for the time being, Texas is pretty good.... it was 72 and perfectly clear in Dallas today. My kids were out running around in their shorts. No state income taxes either. About $60 for the annual license plate fees. Cheap gas too. And how about home prices ranging from $70 to $130 per square foot... and that includes the pool to cool down our hot summers. I can't believe I spent my first 22 years in Chicago. It's a great city but the winters are brutal. Best thing I ever did was attach a U-Haul trailer behind my 280ZX in 1979 and head south with a handful of resumes. |

Now, about that 91 octane only gasoline, for $2+ a gallon, y'all have to make do with out there in addition to all the other costs & indignities... For what I save in income taxes & auto registration fees here in Texas, compared to Calif., every year, we can take a whole lotta trips out there ot visit!!! |

Just came back from Carmel. Great couple of days at my partner's house. I love this state, no I hate this state, no, I love this state. That's right, I just hate the taxes. Just couldn't live anywhere else. A double minded man is unstable in all his ways! Maybe that is why I live here and own a Ferrari. |

Ah, the cost and joy of living in California: 38% Federal income tax 9% state income tax 8% social security tax (15% if you are self employed) 8.5% sales tax on all things bought, including new and used cars $400 annual license plate fee for a 20 year old Porsche 1.25% property tax, sounds small until you realize that the average property values in California is $500,000 for silicon valley and LA. Ah, the cost of sunshine ... is priceless. |

Arlie, Are you trying to cause trouble? Warm weather means the cars are brought out (ie few people drive them in the rain/snow, and we've had this debate many times already) - and so the pickings are much higher. --Dan |

Seriously though, ever notice how warm weather brings out the car thieves and vandals? It seems that theives and vandals, being the low lifes that they are, can't stand the colder weather and during the winter they don't like to get out of their warm hiding places to inflict damage and mayhem to nice vehicles. Is this why warmer places like southern Florida and California have so many car thefts and vandalisms?

Thanks a lot Craig. With what I pay in state taxes, I could almost but another F-car. At least a very good down payment. Maybe move to Florida, Houston? |

I believe there is a discount of 2% on state taxes ordinarily. Like any other tax, there's always some legit way of getting around things, but in the end, even full-out, it's worth paying to be here. --Dan |

Top Calif. marginal state income tax rate is currently 13%, I believe...on top of 39.6% Federal tax & 7.5% social security/mediscare taxes as well. Add it up. Canada might be chaeper than Calif... |

Tom: It's really 9% state income tax but that is on top of the 38% Federal income tax along with 7.75% state sales tax, vehicle tax, property tax, gas tax ...... It can be depressing to think about the gross percentage that all taxes take out of one's earnings. I don't even want to think about it! Maybe it is time for a little tea party! Maybe I will just go on a drive instead, helps get rid of the anger. |

I just may move to Houston to register my cars and reduce my taxes(plus you have David Carr, a wonderful Fresno State boy!) Just have to avoid those humid summer days though! Being a conservative in California is most difficult. We have the most lame governor ever. A friend of mine was Grayout Davis' room mate at Stanford, during lunch a couple of years ago with the governor, my friend wispered to me that Grayout was the single dumbest person he had ever met. I agree! Our taxes are about the highest, the state is very business unfriendly, workers comp rates at out of this world and we have a $36-40 billion budget shortfall. What a place to live. At least I can drive the 328 90% of the time. Small rewards. It is a beautiful place though and has provided me great opportunities. I really love it just can't take the politics and taxes. Oh well, I guess I'll stay. |

Doody, Marin is absolutely awesome. My parents are retiring soon and have some land in Sausalito on which they'll build (they currently reside in Hillsborough). As for earthquakes - anyone who uses that as an argument against living here should stay out - the fewer people coming in, the more space for us! :D Let me be the first to tell you - earthquakes are terrible terrible things and people will go crazy and they're very bad and you don't want to live here at all. :D ;) (I remember there was some small like 4.8 or 5.0 freshman year of college - most of us didn't even feel it, but some kids were calling home saying 'Mom, I just survived an earthquake!' - you'll get more shaking from a bassy rice-rocket.) :D --Dan |

Doody, although several years old, i read a statistic that stated that more people die in accidents involving donkeys, per year, than in airplane accidents... air travel is one of the safest ways to get around... |

at one point i almost had my wife convinced to move to CA (Marin). one of her big issues was the earthquakes. i did a long-term data collection of fatalities in CA attributable to earthquakes (and subsequent disasters, eg: fires) -vs- fatalities attributable to natural disasters (hurricane, blizzard, tornado (yup, once in a rare while), and temperature extremes). i don't seem to have the data anymore, but the comparison was a joke. just the simple temperature extremes here kill a ton of folks in NE. it's very sad. while earthquakes are of course a force to be reckoned with, CA has gone to lengths to make sure its construction methods take them into account, whereas hurricanes and blizzards are a lot harder to plan for. it's the "airplane safety" argument. it's easy to say air travel is unsafe because each instance of a disaster sadly takes dozens or hundreds of lives all at once. but of course cars are way more unsafe - it's just that each disaster only takes one or two lives. and they're so damn frequent :-( people let it roll off their backs mostly and don't notice. the real problem with CA is the taxes and the politics. how it can be the 7th or 8th largest economy on planet Earth and operate the way it does is truly mind-boggling. that said, i for one am quite tired of NE (born and raised). some day i'm just going to buy a house in del mar near dog beach and i'll leave the address on the counter here for my wife if she wants to come visit me, the pooch, and the cars :-) doody. |

Yeah the weather has been great, especially after 10 days in not so sunny Europe. But, I live in Pasadena and we have a little thing called the "Rose Parade". I thought about going for a battery charging drive until I saw the bumper to bumber grid lock all the way down MY quiet little street. So the dog got walked instead. |

I have to admit, there are a lot of things to complain about here in California. Especially if you are a conservative and live in the central part of the state like I do (sorry Art). However, where else can you go on a sunny drive where it is 60 degrees outside, top off, mountains in view, on New Years Day, beautiful!!! Sorry all you folks in snow country. |
