Robert, You are forgetting about the tax break and the fact that rates are probably better right now than they will be for a long while. Also appreciation and equity. Not to mention that a big plus to any financing or business capital need you may have in the future will be based on assets you own. Just something to think about. | ||

Robert, it's been said that, in the long run, owning a home is a far better investment than renting- even if it seems you're spending alot of money in the beginning... But for a single guy like myself (if you fit into that category, too), i would strongly suggest continuing to rent... (unless of course, you're loaded and you can pay for the damn thing, outright)... In October, i'll have been in my current apartment for 1 year and i will have paid a total $5700 in rent- not too shabby, i think... But if you're a family man, owning is a better way to go... As you said, though, buying a home right now wouldn't be too wise as real estate is really high right now and you could end up losing money on it... i would wait it out, if i were you- in your patience, you might actually see your potfolio get fatter in the process, then be able to spend what a house costs now, for twice the size, later down the road...! just my $398,234.48 (but after you take out property tax, that comes out to: two cents.  ) | ||

Not to hijack this thread but.. I have been thinking lately of buying a home as I have a fully rounded portfolio and no debt but own no real estate. The thing that stops me is overhead. If I bought a place where I am living now the taxes and utilities w/o the mortgage would be more than I am paying in rent now w/ utilities included. Also the real estate market is and has been at its highs for quite some time. So to me buying a house now from a strictly investment perspective dosen't seem wise IMO. Am I wrong? | ||

Use it as payments on a 360 drive it hard and have fun when the money runs out give it back. Thats what you would have lost in depreciation/maint, anyway. Then you have no maint. worrys, and great story Move on with life. | ||

If you have a good ongoing income and the $60k is just a bonus of some sort, I would go with a BB512i and use your extra income to restore it to your satisfaction. If the $60k is all you have, I would use most of it to put down on a house and wait until you have accumulated more money to buy the F-Car. | ||

Exactly David: follow the Robert Kiyosaki method and buy an asset and not a liability. Buy enough assets that throw off cash and you can have a "free" ferrari for life. The trouble is having the financial dicipline to follow the plan. | ||

you should make it rule #1 to first buy your own home! Then you buy a toy. Martin, you sound like my "Rich Dad". To be honest if $60K fell into my lap, I would go out and try to leverage as many rental mortgages as possible. Maybe in a year or two I would have enough equity to get a 360 Spider. ;) | ||

An 83-85 308 qv for 30-35k, save the rest for maintenance. This is still my alltime favorite has been since the 308 series came out. I am starting to be drawn to the 348 more and more however hmmmm.... | ||

1983 to 1985 308 GTBQV. I always liked that style. I got my dealers license now but that's not something I would expect to find at a local auto auction. Too many finds there have stories to tell. Not very good ones to say the least. | ||

I was faced with the same situation, and bought a pristine '89 5k mile 328 GTB, took the cats off, put on a tubi and race tires, and could not be happier. Here were my considerations that proved true: 1. Wanted a NEW car. A little less money will get you a NEW 328, that looks, smells, and drives new. This enhances the experience because you can treasure a work of art with no flaws ( you will only have a flawed car with any of the other choices) 2. Mechanically, the late model 328 is THE most reliable Ferrari ever made. They started this car in 77, by 89 they got everything right. I drive my car HARD, race it on the track (where it spits fire from the unrestricted tubis), and have used it as a daily driver for several months (whenever my Porsche breaks) and it has never had so much as a hickup. The car runs flawlessly, always. Spent very little money on the car. Just changed the belts when I got it and changed oil and tires since. Thats about it. 3. It has a great Ferrari feel. Although not as fast as many more modern cars, it FEELS and SOUNDS like the wonderful model it is. The steering wheel is about the best on any car, the gated shifter makes that wonderful Ferrari "click." And the car has a smalll exotic car cockpit that is lost on the newer models which were built so NBA players can carry golf clubs. It is a perfect first Ferrari. If you get brave latter a BB512 is wonderful, but a finicky and expensive beast to maintain. You can really get a wonderful Ferrari experience with the 328 (the B is rarer and more beautiful), without headaces or wallet aches of other Ferrari ownership. Any other choice leaves you will a flawed car (cosmetically, and/or mechanically) and with the constant risk of a $10,000.00 "routine" breakage. The 328 can be enjoyed more fully within the budget. They are also getting nearly fully depriciated, which means you can drive it for free! | ||

This depends heavily on what you do and how much money you make yearly to sustain your hobby. If you just get the money once but are a student with minimal income a less expensive car would be good with some reserve for the unforeseen. If you make decent money but don't have the dough right now to just go and buy the car but can potentially pay for repairs etc. get a nice 348 or a nice TR. Both great cars. As much as I see how one can itch for a car, you should make it rule #1 to first buy your own home! Then you buy a toy. | ||

I've witnessed a few of these threads, and I gotta say IF you do have spare $60K, and you are trying to decide what Fcar you would get - I think you'd be a little more serious in what you want out of that Fcar if anything at all. A spare $60K doesn't guarantee that you can afford the upkeep of a particular car of choice, and each of those cars are among the most popular wanted cars these days and well... I just don't get what you are trying to accomplish with this thread. With a spare $60K there would be more finances I would take care of before the $60K on the Fcar, but that's me. | ||

Considering that you're a student, I would opt for a 308, maybe a 328. Save the rest for your insurance. I think the other cars are pretty much out of the question, although, you never know. Ryan | ||

i'm stashin' the dough somewhere, 'cause someone just doesn't leave 60 large somewhere and not come back for it... So if i buy a Horse, whoever's lookin' for his cheese is gonna rightfully assume that i found it, and he's gonna want it back... Seriously, though, i don't think i'd buy a Ferrari... there's alot of maintenance involved, from what everyone here says and my insurance would sky rocket... i'd be lucky to keep it for a year, then have to sell it for 30k... i'd take some of the money and go rent a Ferrari for a weekend (or lease one for a few months), i'd get my Sentra fixed up real nice or buy a newer model of something else, that can take my abuse, get a crap load of 1:18s to add to the collection, a new computer and hold onto the rest... (that or i'd give it all to Allan or Modman to let me have full and complete access to their garages for a whole week...!) | ||
