Marc,
Since you are searching for a GTB, I would recommend 76-77. All of those are GTB's but the main thing is that in 78 they added cats. I have heard that the 76-77 cars are a little faster, but that's heresay. Also, since there are no cats, you don't have the ugly exhaust cover (and less fire danger)that is on all from 78 onwards. I had a 77 myself some years back and it was a lot of fun. I have already owned 3 308's including the 85 GTB currently in my garage, but I could be coaxed into buying another like maybe a black fiberglass with euro dry sump.

Barry, thanks for the input and have been to the FNA site and found it to to be very helpful.

It seems that I can come across many carb cars but very few gtb cars and the colors I have run into thus far are across the board (yellow, green, blue, brown, and a damaged black one in houston) only 1 red on so far and it is a gts. Oh well the search goes on.

thanks again for the responses they are greatly appreciated

Marc,

I think you'll like the early carburetted 308. Take your time searching and be prepared to travel. A thorough pre-purchase inspection is a must. The Ferrari North America website is an excellent source of information and should assist you greatly. They have a nice section on the 308 series.

Guy i sort of know, named doug brown, in katonah area of ny has an early carb 308, yellow/black, claims to have gotten it just right mechanically. I have not seen the car (or, lately him for that matter). He had a BB which i drove that was very good mechanically. Car is listed in FML: his ph. is 914 232 9056. good luck and tell him i said "hey" if you call him.

Mark, one other thing I'd add that I didn't see mentioned is that there is plenty of on-line literature about the 308's. Read, read, and read as much as you can. It's amazing the number of sites that have reams of technical information, information on options, things to watch out for, and other potetial "gotchas" when looking for 308s and Ferraris in general.

I want thank all of you for your input. I have bought and sold a number of cars over the last 10 years or so. I know that it takes time to find that one special car. Thanks for the resources, some I knew of and some I did not. I look forward to asking many more questions once I find that perfect car. If any of you come across a nice example of a carb model gtb let me know! (that is if you dont buy it for your collections)

As a 1st Ferrari I tried to get a 308 fiberglass.
I didn't find a good examplar even looking for several months. So, I decided to look for a 308 QV - GTS - red/tan. No way!Not in the condition I wanted.
I finnaly bought a 328 GTS red/tan but the 308 fiberglass is still in my mind.
Hope to have one some day :-)

Marc, my first Ferrari was a 1977 Fly yellow GTB. it had 19,000 miles on it when I bought it and it was a 1 owner car. I agree with everyone else on here, get a carb car. Also the early 308 suspension was tuned for Michelin XWX's use these. If someone has put "modern" rubber on the car, throw them away. The carb 308's are so responsive and tossable in the corners they are a delight to drive. IMHO modern tires ruin the personality of these cars. GTB or GTS, both are nice, I prefer GTB's, they are stronger and some say nicer looking, GTS's offer unlimited head room, fun to drive, but not as appropriate on the track, no wrong answer here. Of the Ferrari's I have sold, I wish I still had my 308 GTB. Chris

I found my 78 308 GTS at Chequered Flag in Redondo Beach, CA 1-310-827-8665. They have many F cars and contacts. I found them on the web. This car needed some love and although I can't do the wrench work I can fiddle around with them and make them shine. Anyway its a great car. Good luck their out there

at the risk of sounding like a parrot, i would like to reiterate Dave328GTB's comment on being PATIENT. it took me six months to find the right 355 - and the 355 was ferrari's most-produced car. i'm not a patient guy in general, but i'm extremely glad i held out for the right car.

be patient - the right match will pop.

i had a few helpful folks tell me this a priori (shouts out to parkerfe and teachdna for starters) and i was skeptical that patience would matter much, but they were quite right. don't rush it.

doody.

Marc,
Whatever you find, wherever you find it, it is wise to pay a few hundred and have someone who knows these cars check it out and the older the car, the more important it is. Any carb car should have a compression/leakdown test. They can run well and still be on the verge of wearing out.
Try cars.com. Don't be afraid to travel for the right car. Also, be patient, there are nice cars out there but plenty of scary ones, too. Don't be discouraged if it takes a while.

Marc,
Just finished my search for a 328. I started out looking for a 308, but decided to go with the slightly updated version. I would suggest sticking to the more obviously reputable sources, like the various dealers and Ferrari sites. Ebay will have lots of pictures to whet the appetite, but after scouring it for weeks, I never felt confident about any of the cars there. You're pretty much going to get what you pay for, so don't jump at something that looks too good to be true. Good luck, and have fun!

I was doing the same thing about a year ago, just starting a serious search for carbed 308. I read all I could find at the time, wish I had found this site prior to starting the search but all and all I did find just what I wanted a 79 308GTS and I have been enjoying it since last Sept. I really wanted a carbed model because like you I enjoy doing all my own work. Good luck on your quest.

Places to look for Ferraris...

FerrariAds.com, FerrariMarketLetter.com, ebay.com, major city classified ads like Dallas, and FCA Classified Ads.

There is a black US '79 308 carb gtb in on ebay for sale in AZ. I don't know anything about it, just remember it because it was a gtb (much better looking than gts IMHO).

Let me start by thanking all of you in advance for the information that you will dispense over time! I am a car enthusiast in general, but a Ferrari enthusiast to the core. I am in search of a early 308 Model (GTB, GTS) I would like to find a carb model that has all books and is clean enough to take to an occasional show yet drivable on a regular basis. I have found a few places to search but would love to hear about any others.

Also any insight as to why you, as owners feel that one model is better/worse than any other would be beneficial to me. Let me include the fact that I am an avid DIYer and will not hesitate to disassemble a car I have never worked on. (for better or worse!) I consider myself a capable wrench and as long as I have the book I can do just about anything!

Well I dont want to rant on my first post, I will save that for later! So thanks again for a great informational community and I look forward to your input
