Mine is a 1994 model and does have the black behind the window. It also has the emblem. It is a pretty early production date car though, early 1993. I didn't know that any had the body colored panel from the factory. I thought all of them were repaints! Learned somethin' new!

Sorry Chris - Frank's correction on the rear deck paint is accurate. I should have been specific to the Red cars.

I feel better about the reason for the differences. Thanks.

David, some color Spiders were painted black behind the rear window including my silver one. The rear grill over the engine was body color regardless though. You're correct that the rear emblem was only removed from U.S. spec cars.

Thanks for the thoughts. Unfortunately it looks like the real answer is somewhere between.

Frank's views are logical and marketing is always a concern. ( Does this mean I should change my license plate (348SPIDR)??)

Jeff's point on them being removed is believable but it seems that there are just to many that do not have them mounted.

Chris questions the rear deck lid paint - But the Spider's never had a black rear under the window. By 94 the sides and rear were painted the same as the car. Mine is a late 95 model and has only had the front spoiler painted since delivery. No rear end work.

I am leaning towards Frank and emphasizing this was only done to the US delivered cars.

Any more thoughts ??

Frank's explanation sounds wild, but it makes a lot of sense in a strange way! Never thought of that. I know Ferrari NA was worried about "unloading" the remaining 348's before the 355's came out, this may have been part of the battle plan.

Now I look at some 348 magazine articles from 1993, and see at least two examples of cars without rear emblems - I was wrong!

I guess Frank's idea could be right, but I would also guess that a previous owner removed it when he had the rear decklid repainted. The portion behind your rear window is painted a flat black from the factory so it has been repainted.

Here is what I have read is the reason. By the time the Spider came out the 348 had already developed a bad rep. with the U.S. Ferrari buying public. So, FNA with their infinite wisdom, decided to remove the "348 Spider" from all Spiders before they reached the dealer. That way "348" did not appear on the car anywhere, as only the word "Spider" appeared on the dash. I have no idea if that helped sales in any way. I added a 348 Spider emblem on mine that I bought from TRutlands.

Purchased my 348 spider form the original owner. No badge on the rear lid. In the Original Ferrari V8 book, several photos show 348 spiders with and without the badge. Who knows?
Regarding the 348 spider competiziones. If you order, and pay for the options, the factory will build it.
Remember the "limited" number of F40's?

Its got fiorano handling kit and 18" rims etc. Its a 1994 with non cats a free flowing stainless exhaust stamped Ferrari. Its got no roll cage or racing seats. Its all been documneted in Italy.

David: Since 348 rear emblems are adhesive-mounted, they can be pretty easily removed, either by the owner or by street scum. A little "Goof Off" removes the remaining adhesive, and you'd never know the emblem was ever there. No holes to fill.

As far as I know, all 348's came from the factory with a rear emblem.

Why do some 348 Spider's have a name badge mounted on the rear and others do not ?? Is this a Euro vs USA thing ??

My Spider does not have the badge and it does not have any signs that one was ever mounted. How did it leave the factory ??

Can anyone tell me why ??
