This is interesting, I've been seeing news clips on the show and remember Nika posting pics of the GT40 last year. I wondered if this might portend her return, and here she is!

Welcome back Nika, don't let the bozo's get you down.

Nika--big smiles for your return to this board. Jealousy reigns supreme--what a great experience that must have been. If only they had a track day in some of those cars....

Toronto has a VIP night that is crowd free. Food & beverage stations are set up all over and the entertainment is always fun. Last time I was there I met Caroll Shelby.

The problem is you have to be an industry insider/dealer etc. It's not for press or the general public.

Detroit does a charity preview as well, and it was a great way to see the cars in relative peace. Not any longer, though. The charity preview has taken on a life of its own, and every auto supplier in town sends a few dozen people to it. This results in an evening that is just as crowded as a public showing, only everyone is wearing the same black tuxedo.

Here at the Los Angeles Auto Show you can attend the show one day before they open it to the masses by purchasing a ticket where the proceeds go to a charity. It's a win win , you can write off the $100.00 bucks plus see the cars in relative peace. They allowed up close inspection of the Enzo among other cars.

Nancy is gone from Cauley???? Oh no! She was the best.

John, any idea which BMW dealer she went to?

I can't wait to see the Ferraris at this auto show - especially the Enzo :-)

Alberto - I'll go thru my pixs......all 300 of them. Not to mention the 40 press kits I own now. I did savor the "Enzo" kit though.....that will get a special place in my shrine.

I would of LOVED to meet Nancy - always a pleasure to meet fellow ferrari racerchicks. It's not every day I can chat about how hard it is to "heel/toe" with heels on.....or how a 348 door always breaks a nail. Somehow guys - I doubt you can relate!

It's a shame that a few rotten apples spoil it for all who want to innocently sit in a dream car. When I worked with show cars I could not believe how people would let their children paw the vehicles - saw one drive his hot wheels toy along the trunk lid! A watch, bracelet, rings - they all can scratch the exterior........and yes : Theft! I cannot believe what people take or try to take!

What worked with me was when someone would politely ask first - either early or late in the day when crowds were small. (If people see me let one person they all crowd around for their turn) I hate to say but if you seemed drunk and obnoxious I may let you sit in it just to get you to LEAVE.

Oh - the stories I can tell!!!!!! But no need to bore you anymore

Thanks for the pics. I figured Dan Cable was at the Ferrari stand. Did you see Nancy Kelly by chance? I'll be there on Monday and I want to get behind the ropes! (But not to steal a shift knob!)

Unfortunately, we live in an age of vandalism, and we all pay the price for hooliganism. The reason most companies don't let you sit in the cars is because there isn't much left after 6 or 700k people sit in your car over a weeks time. Shift knobs are stolen, switches are broken, etc. More and more companies feel they are better off limiting access rather than have potential customers have their first impression be clouded by missing parts and trashed surfaces, etc.

Nika, i agree- everyone should be allowed to sit in them (and if not everyone, then just ME is ok, i guess :-))
Did they let you sit in the Enzo or the Murcielago...?
The Maybach isn't my thing, Mustang's don't do it for me and Suzuki, well... uh uh...

DES - I think the hardest thing was controlling myself around the cars - somehow they have the "Pavlov's Dog" effect on me and I start to drool. Certainly not lady-like. Many companies allow you to sit in the vehicles too - which really is what they should allow ALL people to do, not just press.

Other cars of interest: Maybach - you want luxury, at $300,000....it is exactly like a business jet. The New Mustang Concpet that resembles the old 60's version of the 428 Cobrajet......even Suzuki had a wild and a cool concept vehicle.

Nika, where have you been, wrestling a polar bear?
I'll bet a $5 Canadian Maple Leaf coin that you have been lurking, just not posting. (I only have one coin, so can't wager any more than that.)
What kind of "freebies" were the Ferrari and Lambo guys giving away? Surely you didn't go home empty handed? That giant Lamborghini logo sign above the yellow car looks like it could have accidently fallen off into your suitcase. No souvineers? Say it ain't so. I don't think that Vipercycle has enough horsepower. Do they make one in YELLOW?

They were magnetic.......those flames along with the fuzzy dice were for a story I was working on. They have NEVER been on since.
Enzo would be rolling in his grave at a Ferrari hot rod !!!!

Birdcage. So called because of it's chassis of tiny welded tubes. The chassis is visible under the windscreen.
Chassis is similar to one in my P4.

Missed everyone too - even you Frank Parker!

The auto show was remarkable - from the bomb sniffing dogs to the strange concept cars that make you go "HUH?"

Ferrari was kind enough to let me go "upstairs" to their lounge - the lounge where people such as Luca M the Grand Fromage, Jackie Stewart and Bill Meguiar were relaxing. The biggest mistake of my life so far is probably NOT staying the extra day - I was invited by a fellow journalist to take part in his interview of Luca DiMontezeumolo (sp?). (Nika bangs head on desk and swears quietly). It was on the pretence I could translate! HA! I can only buy SHOES in Italian!!!! Questa bella Machina!!!!!

I just keep telling myself my journalist friend was joking. (wipes away tear) Oh well - I needed to be home after a crazy travel schedule from Dec 25th on. Home is where the heart is....just not my 308 baby...not until Spring.

Good News: Heard the Enzo will be at the Toronto Auto show.

Dan Cable of McCauley Ferrari is always the kind, generous person he is.

Lastly - what model Maserati is the red one? I'm curious to know....anyone?

Happy New Year

DES: Journalists like Nika get to take advantage of Press Days that allow them to meet with the manufacturers, sit through endless presentations and view the vehicles in relative solitude prior to the actual opening of the show. The rest of us must fight for a view with the 700,000+ other paying spectators.
