Surprise! The guy from the dealership called me back and suddenly agrees with everything. They have this policy that the "supercars that they sell don't leave the dealership for whatever reason, but they accept a Ferrarimechanic to come over and do a PPI on the car. They have all the equipment available since they also do maintenance on Ferrari's. Luckily I have found a mechanic who is willing to come with me and check the car.
So we are talking now about an '89 corsa rossa with 48000 km (30000 miles) with major service incl cambelts just performed. It is a two owners car and the complete history of the car is available. It is accidentfree but it has been repainted partly because of stonechips and a "keyscratch".
The car looked even better than yesterday. But I want to keep my head cool! The mechanic gave me some tips to check for and it all looks fine. Only the original tools are missing but they say that they are still with the owner and return to the car soon (?).

Because it has snowed a little and the roads are full of salt we wait with the PPI and testdrive until things improve. I can feel that my heart starts to beat a little bit faster. Did I finally find it?

Do you guys have any special remarks or tips?

Thanks for the assistance sofar! I think that Ferrarichat is a fantastic forum for Ferrariminded people. Even DES enjoys it, although he is still missing the cupholders.

greetings from a cold Belgium (0 degrees Fahrenheit)

#2; no PPI??? Anyone who's willing to spend a few hundred on a PPI is serious and should be treated accordingly. Something seems not right with that car.

If it were through a dealer and they were prepared to do all the work such as change all fluids and change belts and check over thoroughly and do service, I wouldn't hesitate to go for #1 - forget the others.

If its not going to get a total 're-datum' on someone elses dollar forget #1 completely.

Unfortunately many here will show you complete disregard for low miles cars, when in the right circumstances and at a not too over inflated price, they are a great buy.

does not sound right to me - please clarify, I assume its a dealership of some sort? if so I assume they are probably selling the car as is? if so while it might be easier for them to have you bring the mech to them I cannot understand why they will not drive or flatbed the car over to a mechanic of your choice (assuming the distance is within reason). When I wass looking for my car I found everyone was willing to drive up to a hour to have the car inspected by my mechanic

Hmmmm......, they don't accept a PPI on the no.2 car! I can bring a mechanic to them to have a look at the car but they won't let the car go for an inspection elsewhere. That sounds a little odd to me!
Should I forget about it?

No worries anymore about the no.1!! I just received a telphonecall that it is sold. So I will focus now on no.2. I will talk to them about a PPI tomorrow! Is there a place on the internet where you can check the car's history if you have it's VIN#?

$38.9 for an '89 seems like an incredible bargain. Almost a little suspicious. Good luck with the PPI - hopefully it will be in your favor.

If you are at all thinking about track events the 89 is far superior. Different suspension and brakes. The 89s are also traditionally in a higher price category.

Ton, the clutch problem has been resolved... thanks for asking. The problem was that a guide pin for the TO Bearing was sheared off... The combination of replacing a new guide pin and some new seals for my slave did the trick, and my clutch is good as new! (Although now I may considering pulling out the racing clutch for a stock one to protect the lifespan of my flywheel).

You know, I came close to buying a 1992 348 that was very similar to #1... not driven much, had only 3k miles, interior was brand new... everyone I talked to told me not to touch it with a ten foot pole (especially since I was buying a car to drive)... if you are looking for a show car only, then things may be different.

I'd say jump on #2, assuming it passes a PPI. Thats a great price on an 89.

Hey BobD, you still want to sell me your car? :-)

Ton -- for 328 #1 do you mean:

it sat for 8 years, had a major, and then sat for 3 more years,

or

it sat for 11 years, had a major, and then has been driven more regularly over the last 3 years?

So I will cancel the PPI on the no.1 that I had planned for thursday and go for my initial feeling. I will try to arrange a PPI on the no.2.

Or should I sit and wait for "a better one"?

Andreas thanks for the offer! I will send you an email if I can't find it.
Byron, how is your clutch problem on the 348?

Run from #1... garage queen status. I agree with Ken... $60k car by the time you are done with it.
#2 looks pretty nice... make sure you do a thorough PPI... not a bad price at all.
#3 is pretty attractive though, too, but make sure you get the details on what was performed 2 years ago.

Don't worry too much about the miles - if they are documented and the car was well cared for during those miles, I don't think there is a real issue. There are plenty of owners here on Fchat that have WAY more miles than that!

Best of luck!

Mileage difference does matter, but not so much around these numbers *IF* the big 30k has been done properly.

You can get a copy of Forza at better bookstores (e.g. Barnes&Noble) and order a backup copy of that particular one. Alternatively let me know your postal address or fax # and I'll send you a copy.

Thanks for the advice. I also have a positive feeling towards no.2. The car looks good and everything is well documented. Should I worry about the difference in milage?
How can I get a copy of the 328 buyers guide in Forza?

Pass on #1. You'll have a $60k car by the time it's all sorted out.

#2 is a fair price if not a bargain. If the service is well documented, etc. and it drives well, AND passes a PPI, then offer $33 and buy it for the best price you can.

#3 May need more service than it got as it's been driven less than 1000 miles a year. Could be a good car however. If #2 fell through I'd get a PPI on this car next.

Usual disclaimer: this is my opinion entirely and should not be construed as useful information.

Skip option 1 (11 years is too long) and pick #2. #3 might work as well. Check out the Forza buyer's guide for more details, as they say it there: "...a 328 is like Coke. What's there not to like?"

Enjoy!

Ton,
I'm sure that many of the older posters may have more specific advise for you but my immediate reaction would be to discount the first and third option. That is assuming that the repaints really were cosmetic.

Inspect all of the paper work with the car and make sure you have everything accounted for. Unless you really know the owner, don't accept their word for anything major. See documentation.

The first car looks like a classic garage queen that is going to cost you alot to get the cobwebs out of. The second sounds like a car that hasn't been maintained well.

Just my opinion.

Hello,
I recently joined Fchat and I am already for a while actively looking for a Ferrari 328GTS. Now I have found the following options:

1. 01/88 328 GTS 8000 miles red/black first owner.
Car did not move for 11 years and had it's last major service 3 yrs ago. It also has a dent on the bonnet. paint is OK, interior is like brand new. price $42.000

2. 07/89 328 GTS 36.000 miles red/black second owner. Car was driven regularly. Major service is just performed. front of car is repainted because of stonechips and and the right rear is repainted because of a scratch. Other than that the car is accident free. Interior is OK with small usermarks. price $38.900

3. 02/87 328 GTS 20.000 miles red/black third owner. Last owner has car only two years and wants to sell it because he does not like driving the Ferrari. He prefers his BMW Z1. Major service 2 yrs ago. paint OK. interior with small usermarks. Price $37.000

What is wisdom? Advice is much appreciated.

Ton
