LMAO, he actually knew...!

i have $5 that says he quoted that from memory and didn't have to look in the book... Any takers...?

L. Wayne, thank you... You set yourself up, though, 'cause now everyone's gonna ask you a question, everytime they have one... :-)

DES, you flatter me. I don't know everything. I do, however happen to have a lot of books. Dr. Charles Earle Funk was editor-in-chief of the Funk & Wagnalls Standard Dictionary series as well as being an astute etymologist (one who studies the history and origins of linguistic forms such as words, phrases, etc). Dr. Funk authored sveral books on the subject, of which I happen to have one on my shelves, "2107 Curious Word Origins, Sayings, & Expressions From White Elephants to a Song & Dance."

In it, Dr. Funk has the following to say regarding the phrase, "Dutch treat" or "Going Dutch Treat," now commonly shortened to "Going Dutch."

"We of Pennsylvania Dutch extraction have always been of an independant spirit, unwilling to be "beholden" to anyone--and, by the same token, taking it for granted that a neighbor or companion is of the same spirit. In consequence, though far from any justifiable accusation of ungenerosity, we expect that anyone fully able to pay his own way will do so. Thus, when, by design or chance, one of us is accompanied by an aquaintance into a place of entertainment or refreshment, we think it but natural that each pay his own scot. And that is Dutch treat--or Dutch lunch, Dutch supper, or Dutch party."

As for "Dutch oven," Dr. Funk has nothing to say on that matter, at least not in this particular book.

Bart, on a serious note, you raise a good question: i wonder where that term came from...? You think if we ask L. Wayne, he'll know...? He knows everything else...

Bart,
I often wonder about 'going Dutch' and 'Dutch oven' as well :-) It's used in Canada as well.

Ryan, just the picture of the item in the link, below... If you'd prefer i posted the picture in the thread, no problem, just let me know, but it'll have to wait 'til tomorrow when i get to work as this computer @#$%& &*#$ and i'd never get it done, properly...

Most people think i'm weird, but i haven't driven a car in two years without wearing a pair of driving gloves... Any season, any car, any reason- even if it's just to back it up or park it in the garage or something... i go through a pair of gloves every few months and after they're worn to the point where they're no longer useful, i keep them, as part of my cars/accessories collection... i highly recommend everyone should get a pair of driving gloves- they'll change you forever.

Ok, i think, at this point, i'm talking to myself here, but the auction ended; i won (it was a Dutch auction, it's kinda hard to lose) and i'll be taking delivery of two black pairs of Ferrari driving gloves shortly... i used PayPal and it was pretty 1-2-3, even though i've heard quite a few complaints about it... i'll keep everyone (read: myself) posted when i get the gloves...

No, Andrew, wait... it gets even weirder than that...

It's obvious someone's telling me to buy the gloves... i'm under the assumption that someone's doing me a favor, here, so i figure i'll just go ahead and bid... but then i realize i don't know the password to my new account name (and if this account was created out of malice for some reason, i don't want the creator to have access to my credit card info), so i log out and go to "forgot password" where it asks if i want to log back in... it asks me for the answer to my "secret question"- i got it right on the second guess...! So i changed the password, just to be safe... This is obviously not a mistake that this account was created... whoever created it (if it was someone from here), i don't know why you did, but thanks... i'll bid on them, they're cheaper than the price listed last night, so i might get more than one pair...

Um... i'll keep everyone updated... this is very weird...

Ok, this gets weirder... for the hell of it, i click the "click here to complete your registration" button in the email and it takes me to the site, complete with a registration name (des9876) and there's an option to see the last item des9876 was looking at, so i click it and it takes me to the exact same gloves i linked below, only now they're $5 cheaper...!

Anyone have any clue as to what might be happening here...? Any advice or direction or wisdom or expression of concern or even a wise crack would be helpful right about now...

They had some neat looking ones on ebay for only $25 or something like that. I was going to buy them but the auction ended too soon for me to bid :-) They had brown and black leather ones for Porsche and Ferrari that were very classy and european tradition styled.

I found them by going to ebaymotors, then go the apparel section and search for Ferrari or Porsche.

There is some cool stuff there...

No, what you do, is to feed the leather once a month. Then every time you get into your Ferrari, it smells like new!

Air freshners are for Fords--not that there is anything wrong with Fords............

i didn't want to start a new thread for this, but then i figured, it's really not nice to hijack someone else's thread, either, so, um...

Does anyone know if Ferrari makes air fresheners that you hang from the mirror in your car, in the shape of the Prancing Horse...? i thought that would be kind of cool... That's all... thanks...

You know what...? Since i'm here, i might as well indulge myself: Except for Exoticar.com, the website of some Porsche dealership in Texas and Wilson's leather, i'm not able to find driving gloves... Not F1-style, multi-colored, looks-like-winter-gloves-for-playing-in-the-snow gloves, just regular, full-fingered gloves, with the holes in the knuckles... Exoticar.com has Lamborghini gloves and the Porsche website, well... they had Porsche gloves... The Porsche gloves were awesome- very thin leather, not sloppily made, i was very happy... Haven't had the chance to get the suede ones from exoticar yet, but i'd really like Ferrari driving gloves (preferrably black)- anyone know where i might go...? Any help or direction would be really appreciated... Thanks, everyone... :-)
