my local bank will do wire over phone for up to $2500, anything over in person or with prior arrangements, so is probably just a Bank One thing...some of these nationwide banks are pretty crappy to deal with on anything other than taking your money.

FWIW, that's a gorgeous car at what seems to be a really good price. Hope everything goes well and you end up with it :-) Congrats.

This bank, Bank One, (I deal with 3 banks) said that their bank will only do wires in person. Something to do with the Patriat (sp) Act. In the past, they did faxes, but they said no more.

It might be just the policy of this bank. I was surprised - this was something new that I had never heard of. However, we got around it by overnighting a cashiers check. More work but it got the jobe done.

My first ever contact with PayPal was Monday and I already hate them.

I am sure that Frank would be too busy for something minor like this.

I buy cars all the time with wire transfers. And since 911. You need a fax sent to you from your bank to sign and fax back and it is no problem.

Paypal is the worst company on the planet. They make you jump through so many hoops to verify this and verify that. Copies of bank statments, bla bla bla. I had to fax them three different times. On my last fax I noted that if I have to fax one more thing I was going to be faxing it to my attorney as well

Finally a number for them.

I spent about an hour and a half going through almost every screen on their web site and could not find a number.

I would never run a business without someway to talk to a person as a final resort.

Thanks for the number - I will do a follow up call this afternoon.

We are going to do the exchange in Atlanta - the car has been moved to North Atlanta. Using the Atlanta dealer as escrow agent for delivery is a great idea - I should have thought of that. Sometimes I get busy and do not think. Who is the dealer in Atlanta that Frank always recommends? Any other dealers in case that dealer is too busy?

Thanks everyone!

Actually both at this point.

I may regret this.

He now says he will honor our deal.

On PayPal, I signed up with eBay using one address. With PayPal I used another card and the address where those statements are sent to. Since two different cards and addresses, this set off a security alarm at PayPal. PayPal does not have a phone number where one can talk to a person. I think it is now straightened out. PayPal has charged the card, but not actually sent it through yet. I have emailed canceled it, but do not know if it will take.

On the cashiers check, I am one of the bank's best customers. Since I travel much, I deal with them mainly verbally. They cut the $2,500 cashiers check and are drop shipping the check to the seller in NC on my verbal instructions.

Hopefully things will work out. If not, I have lost more than this in other deals. I think things will work out. If not, I will lick my wounds and move on.

Are you more worried about losing the deal or losing the money? Sounds like you should immediately reverse the PayPal instructions, in writing as well as by phone, if possible; as to the cashier's check, who is supposed to be picking it up, you? If so, hold onto it, and email your guy, saying you have it, but want written confirmation before doing anything further. Where is the seller located? Know anybody there that can act as an agent for you, or could you retain the services of a local dealer to do so, including acting as escrow agent for delivery?

I was the high bidder on this car:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1876047815

Before bidding, in emails I said that it might take slightly more than 5 days to arrange everything and would this be alright. He replied that as long as I paid the deposit to show I was seriours, that was fine. I could have the bank wire him the deposit the next business day. We made an agreement that he would get all of his money this week or next week. Then I would pick up the car the weekend a week and a half from now.

After I was the winning bidder, I emailed him asking how he wanted the deposit. I had never used PayPal, but I could wire the money or arrange for a cashiers check. He said he wanted PayPal. So I started the paperwork with PayPal. They will probably have it set up this afternoon.

Last night, he said in emails and in a phone call, that he wanted a cashiers check since PayPal was taking so long. PayPal has charged my card, but have not vertified everything since I have multiple addresses. This morning got a message that he would prefer a wire transfer. Called the bank and they said that due to new laws after 9/11 they could no longer do a wire transfer over the phone. So I asked if they could overnight for morning delivery a cashiers check for the $2,500.00 deposit. They said no problems since they knew me. Cashiers check is cut and will probably be picked up in the next hour.

Called his wife to give her all the information (he said to do it that way). She said that he has sold it to someone else, apparently for a higher amount.

There is no answer on his cell phone, but he could be in meetings.

Not for sure what to do now. Not for sure my rights. Not for sure if I should call the bank and have the cashiers check pickup cancelled.

Any advice?
