Wayne:

I can have a copy in the mail to you tomorrow if you send me your address through my email. Cover price is $7.95, I imagine shipping would be a buck or two.

I know of four stores in my area that carry International Wrist Watch, you might be able to find it locally in a good book store if you want to try that first. This issue just came out here on 1/15/03. It's #62, December 2002. Checking their website, I don't see this issue shown yet, and I'm not sure if you can order current issues. Back issues are $18.

The article is 5 pages with 12 pictures.

Bruce, if you order 4, I'll throw in shipping for free!

L. Wayne:

Going back to the discussion about 0456AM for a moment, I bought a copy of "International Wrist Watch", issue 62, last night, and there is an article about the new Girard-Perregaux watch honoring this car! There is a limited edition of 375 watches, 125 in white gold ($25,000) and 250 in rose gold ($22,500). The dial is in Ingrid Grey, and the outline of 0456AM is engraved on the caseback. The story of the car is related in the text. Very handsome, I love nice wristwatches.

Sammy Hagar's black 512bbis is in the "I Can't Drive 55" video.

After Michael Jordan parted from the 512, who put the "NOT MJ" IL plates on it?
I actually saw that black 512 TR on the way to IL in WI, on I94 in '99 and 'played' with it on the freeway. I stopped in at Lake Forest Ferrari and asked if they by chance knew who that was- I forgot who they said, but they said it was MJ's at one time.

I may be wrong but I believe Jay Leno had or had an F50. If you look closely in the 'Red Road Gods' video you see him buffing a red one. If it ain't him, it's his twin brother.

Wayne:

You are most likely 100% correct. I should have checked my facts. I wasn't even aware that "grigio Ingrid" was a current color in the Ferrari lineup. I could have sworn that I read that 0402 was painted "grigio Ingrid" when it was rebodied, it will drive me to distraction until I find where I read that. Why did Ferrari name a champagne color as grigio (grey)? Thank you for the correction and your interesting comments.

Jeff, as I stated before, 0402AM was, "from the git-go" not at all what you see today. It was originally a 375MM PF Spyder in Rosso with tan leather interior. After its rebody by Scaglietti, it was painted silver-gray. I can't find a reference to the name of this shade, only a mention in Cavallino #107 that during its recent restoration, it was finished in "a PPG shade of gray" to exactly match the color it wore when it left the Scaglietti shop in 1956. Cavallino #104 states that the paint was chemically stripped from the body "in order to find the rebodied car's original color" but doesn't state a name for that color. A quick look at any picture of 0402AM will show that the car is very definitely silver-gray and not champagne. The color being used by Ferrari currently with the name "Grigio Ingrid" is a champagne color, as shown on the image of a 456M below. Check out some photos of 0456AM and you'll see that it is currently this exact same champagne color (sorry, but I don't have time to scan and post more pics right now).

Wayne:

I thought 0402 was painted from the "git-go" in a special color that was named "grigio Ingrid", and Mr. Shirley took great efforts to have that original color duplicated when the car was restored. I can't find where I read that, maybe I made it up. And you can't believe everything you read. I know that 0456 is more closely related to Ingrid Bergmann, I was referring strictly to the origin of the color. I am not familiar at all with the current color of 0456. I will find out tomorrow about 0402/grigio Ingrid, just for curiosity.

It couldn't have taken me 5 minutes to type that response. How did you get in a reply while I was typing that is stamped 5 minutes before mine? Anyway, even though 0456AM was originally light blue, it has spent most of its life in the champagne color it wears now. I am under the impression that it is the inspiration for the color name.

Jeff,

0402AM, originally a red 375 PF Spyder, was rebodied for Rossellini as a coupe by Scaglietti and painted silver, not the champagne color "Grigio Ingrid." In addition, though the car was owned by Rossellini, it has never been associated with Bergman as 0456AM has. I don't see any connection between this car and the "Ingrid" color at all.

Evan, funny thing about that Ingrid Bergman (yes, you spelled it correctly) car:

The car you refer to is s/n 0456AM, a 375MM "speciale" that was built as a styling exercise by Pinin Farina and shown at the Paris Salon in 1954. Italian film director, Roberto Rossellini, fell in love with the car and purchased it shortly after the show's closure on October 17, 1954. Though it was reportedly a wedding gift for his wife, Ingrid Bergman, it is doubtful she ever drove the car. In fact, family members report that, by that time, Bergman was not too happy with Rossellini and had grown tired of his passion for expensive Ferraris. Still, people love a good story and the wedding present legend continues to live on.

As for the color, the car was actually light blue during the time Rossellini owned it. It wasn't until many years later that it was repainted in the champagne color that Ferrari now refers to as "Grigio Ingrid." 0456AM is currently owned by retired attorney and Ferrari collector Wayne Golomb, who uses the car, as well as his one-of-a-kind 1954 375 Plus Cabriolet, as daily transportation.

Ingrid Bergman (old actress, spelling?) had a F-car built for her in a special color, now named Grigio Ingrid.

Jerry Brockheimer (producer) had a few.

Phil Collins has had quite many over the years.

Nick Mason also has a red McLaren.

Wyclef Jean doesn't have a McLaren, they photoshoped that black one into the video.

The 550 Maranello in Family Man belonged to Nick Cage while the movie was being filmed.

Joey Kremer from Aerosmith has a Titanium 360 as previously mentioned, his plate says "modena" I see him around town quite a bit. Brad whitford also has had a F355 that burnt up at the local gas station. Steven Tyler has had a few cars but mostly travels in a helicopter or limo. Ive seen a Z06 w/NOS that he drives. They are actually real nice guys who are into cars. Pippen is building a house in my neighborhood in Ft Lauderdale. I have not seen any Fcars but he has a cool basketball court.

Ken,

Jordan gave Pippen his 456 not 512TR. He traded the 512 for the 456. Gave Pippen the 456, as the story goes, 'cause Scotty put much thought and effort into a custom made piece of jewelry for Michael, and Mike just got Pippen a nice box 'o cigars for Christmas. A bit embarrassed, Michael said 'I know you've admired my Ferrari, how 'bout you take it' something to the effect, and 'give me your Porsche'....

How do I know? I did an NBA conversion on the car for Pippen while managing LFSC's Race Shop.

And...

Did the same conversion for Jawan Howard when he first signed with the Pacers. He brought a buddy with him at delivery in case he had difficulty with shifting as he'd only learned recently.

Same for Michael's 512TR when new in 1991.

Same for Bill Cartwright for his Mondial in '91 (put the front seat into the back after removing said back seat.

Bo Jackson also had a Testarossa as I discovered when we stored some cars for him when he first moved to Chicago. Personally drove his 500SL to him one spring in, super nice guy!

Then there was the time Walter Payton grabbed my as*! He was running Trans Am at the time. We were at Road Atlanta and he came over to visit with the team he used to run Pro Sports 2000 with. It was his way of introducing himself! I was leaning over the car and he caught me by surprise big time. Really a unique and genuine guy.

Michael Jordan gave his black Testarossa to Scottie Pippen when they were both Bulls...

Sammy Hager's 512 and Eddie Van Halen's Ferrari (don't know the model) car horns, played backwards, is the inro to "Running With The Devil". Hagar got in to the band when they were both having their Ferraris serviced at the same place. The mechanic mentioned to both seperately that they should get together, and the rest is history?

I know these are not older celebs. But it's still fun to know who has what:

Wyclef Jean (Fugee singer) has a McLaren F1, it's in one of his videos. And a 360 Modena.
Praz (also from the Fugees) has a 550.

ICE-T (rapper) has had a host of exotic sports cars. He currently owns a F360 Modena.

Master P., his F360 has gotten a lot of discussion on this board. Apparently the ugliest thing ever done to a Ferrari. I still haven't seen the pictures, but if it's that bad I don't want to.

Brian McNight (R&B singer): Ownes a F360 Modena among other sports cars.

Tommy Lee F car has an interior resembling a dumpster...no suprise there then, bit like his women!

Nick Mason is the man when it comes to F cars, not only does he use and abuse them, he willingly allows others to do it too!

I believe JK is a bit of a Lambo fan too. If he's got an Enzo at least thats one we will see actually used on a road then!

F355 GTS.

Frank Beard from ZZ top has/had many F-cars including a 250GTO spyder built on a 250GTE chassis i believe.
It was featured in the DuPont registry many years ago and it looked awesome IMO.
Nick Mason has owned his 250GTO since the early '70s i think and he said in a magazine interview that he's even driven his kids to school in it when his other cars woudn't start in the middle of a U.K. winter!!
now, that's a cool car to be driven to school in,even without a heater.:-)

Yes, Tommy Lee's TR is black. Don't know if he still owns it, or if he gave it to what was Ogner Ferrari in lieu of repair payment. It had been there for YEARS after he ran over a fairly large boulder in while carving the corners in the canyons of San Fernando. I beleive the entire rights side lost both front and rear suspension systems, as they were torn out when the boulder bit in. Cost nearly 30k to repair, and from what the mechanics said, he was unable/unwilling to cough up the dough.

The interior was FILTHY. Dirty, dusty, with cigarette butts wedged between the seats, and it stank like a bum's whisky-ridden breath.

That car has seen some pretty crazy times, to be sure.

Nick Mason is the Pink Floyd band member, and he has a Ferrari collection that is awesome, ie.:

* 250GTO
* Gilles Villeneuve's 312T3 (I think it is a T3).
* Competition Daytona.
* Le Mans Boxer ... that another Pink Floyd band member raced at Le Mans.
* 512S ... car used to create the Le Mans film.
* F40.

Plus:
* Maserati 250F
* Maserati Birdcage
* v16 BRM
* 8c Alfa Romeo
* Jaguar D-type
* Porshes, Bugattis, Lola ...

He wrote a book called 'Into the Red' which contains a road test comparion on many of these cars ... plus it includes a sound CD!

Luck man, and appears to be a true enthusiasts ... not in it for the money :-). His GTO does many miles ... always lapping at some old car event :-)

There are way to many to list here. Almost everybody who was or is anybody has owned at least one F-car, especially modern celebrities. Even back in the day (50's, 60's & 70's) there were plenty of celebrity owners.

Just to detail some of those that have been mentioned here:

James Cagney's 1957 250GT Boano/250 LWB Cal Syder was s/n 0627GT. Brigitte Bardot's 1958 250 LWB Cal Spyder was 0937GT. Peter Seller's 1965 500 Superfast was 6679SF.

Nick Mason still owns 1962 250GTOs/n 3757GT. Other "celebrity" GTO owners include designer Ralph Lauren who owns s/n 3987 (1962) and F1's Bernie Ecclestone who owned one of the three 1964 GTOs, s/n 5571GT, though he only had the car for a short time (1996-97).

Also not yet mentioned is Steve McQueen who owned 1967 275GTS/4 NART Spyder s/n 10453 and, no, it is NOT the same car that was featured in his film "The Thomas Crown Affair." That was s/n 9437. McQueen owned several other Ferraris as well.

Yeah I think you're right, but what does that make it different from a 360 spider?

I remember vaguely, that it had a way low front window, which wouldn't be street legal, but apart from that?

Nit picking point, Tommy Lee's (of Motley Crue) 1990 TR was black, IIRC. I read somewhere (think on FChat!) that it was rumored to be in the shop, and he was lagging on paying for the repairs...

Joey Kramer,the drummer for Aerosmith has his 360 Modena as well as his 996 cabrio in the Dec '02 or Jan '03 issue of Mobile Entertainment.
He said that he only listens to the stereo when in traffic,as he prefers the engine sound when carving up the backroads.:-)
It's Titanium/dark red 6sp.w/color coded challenge grille.
He also lists his top 5 fav's,
McLaren
ANY F50
Aston Vanquish
SL55
275 GTB/4
The man has good taste me thinks.

Very briefly because I'm at work and we're really busy right now:

WM, yes on Bardot and the Cal Spyder but Cagney's was actually a wrecked and rebodied Boano coupe.

Tom, Nick Mason (mentioned by Andrew right before you) is the drummer from Pink Floyd that owns the GTO and others. A must have is the book "At the Limit" about his collection.

Okay, gotta run. More later...

Tom Selleck owned a Testarossa...I actually read that he made a deal with the co-stars of Magnum PI that if the show got popular enough he would buy them all a Porsche. Indeed he did, and he bought all of his co-starts a 928. I forget where I heard that though...

Got 'La Passione' from Amazon in the UK. Naturally it came in PAL (not NTSC). I heard that is the only way it's avail. I have multi norm equipment, so it was not a big deal; if you don't you could ask a video shop to make you a conversion (they did that once for me for $ 20, but they refuse to do it for copyrighted material).

Actually, i was thinking of 50's and 60's celebrity types(like Sellers, Miles), and not the well known collectors, or owners about whom much has already been written (Rossellini). But the mention of La Passione reminded me that at one time i made a faint attempt to search for the film on video without success. Is it sold by mail order, available on DVD, etc.?

The singer from Jamiroquai has about 5 F cars. He was actually on the official Ferrari World Club DVD. They must like him in Maranello!

Goldie Hawn's Mondial was on ebay recently.

German singer Udo Juergens has some and made some news last summer when he cancelled his order after the Zeltweg incident.

The late James Coburn (sp?) had his F car portrayed in Forza recently.

Of course many of the Ferrari drivers had their Ferraris, such as Lauda, Schumi, Alboreto, Villeneuve and Regazzoni to name the ones I know had F cars for sure.

This should generate some interesting responses. How about Peter Sellers and his 500 Superfast? And the Roberto Rossellini cars (375).

As an aside, I don't know if Bardot had a California, but she had a well known Lancia Aurelia convertible prototype by Pininfarina.

Apropos the posting about Paul Newman's ferrari, i thought it might be interesting to tabulate some of the more interesting owners of ferraris past. Leave aside the despots and dictators, and the more recent pop and sports celebs. I know B. Bardot had, at one time, a Calif. Spyder, as did Jimmy Cagney(i think). Clint Eastwood owned at least a 275 and a boxer. How 'bout more unusual celebrity owners (eg not playboys, as would be expected, but people like the Stooges, etc). L. Wayne, what say you?
