Manu,

I agree. Ferrari cars are synonymous with very fast cars. There will always be cars that will want to do that little bit extra, just to go one-up on Ferraris. That is inevitable, because Ferrari is effectively the standard-setting manufacturer in the industry.

But that does not mean that Ferrari does not have to stay alert and keep up with the competition.

It is never easy to reach the top. It is even more difficult in trying to stay there.

I understand what you guys are saying about there being a practical limit to performance and where to use it.. and as I said before, that performance in itself does not define a Ferrari but we all know it's a HUGE part of the appeal.... no Ferrari (when compared to cars of it's era) is SLOW... but they ought to be quick - and I mean all of them should be SAVAGE behind the wheel - endless, relentless acceleration...
Think about it :why should a Porsche/SL55/BMW..etc be quicker - (Lamborghini I exclude)????

For the next V12 flagship I want to see 0-100mph times of 8.0s and 0-150mph of 16-18s.... something that you can a truly say, is one of the fastest cars in the world.

Well said Ben!

However, we still would like to have more power/torque/numbers than any rivals in the market as this IS a Ferrari. Don't forget the current 456 is still the fastest 4-seater in the world(please corect me if I am wrong).

I would be happy to see retractable top with 4 sets for adult, 6000cc ~550bps+, electronic adjustable damper system and 6-speed F1 standard with 6-speed manual as an option.

Everyone who compares Ferrari to other makes with numbers keeps forgetting...

The guy (or gal!) in the Ferrari, with that Ferrari-idoit-grin we all know so well, has already won before the race began :-)

Even better to see 2 Ferraris going at it, as no one really looses exactly...

Best!

Where can you go that fast anymore anyway? Without going to jail? A 700bhp modified supra can whip an F40, but one of them is a mass-produced Toyota and the other is the product of a legendary company that has always combined beauty and performance. I'm saving my pennies (alot of them I guess) for a 456 someday. I sold my turbo supra without regret

And with the Enzo, Ferrai has proved that they could build supremely fast cars, too.

As to the price tag? Well, Ferrari is merely saying, "if you want that kind of performance with a Ferrari marque, you'd better paid for it. Cheaper makes exist, but a Ferrari is a Ferrari."

I would also agree with that, Ernesto.

I think Ferrari deliberately tries not to go to the extremes with their standard "street cars". Not that they cannot do it. It is just that they are trying to be sensible about it.

When you think about, Ferrari has never made the fastest street cars - at least from certain performance parameters like top speed and 0-60. But they have somehow managed to create a driving experience that is unmatched by any other car. Thay also happen to around racing circuits rather quickly.

Manu,

I agree with every word that you have said.

I would be loathe to race the 456 with other street cars, but I would still hate to see the 456 being chastised for being slower to some other makes.

When I saw the latest performance figures for the new Bentleys, Astons, and SL55s, as well as the 575Ms, I had often wondered as to just how Ferrari could expect the 456 to hold its own ground with a performance like this, and a price like that.

Now I am beginning to see the answer. The answer is that Ferrari has not been resting in its laurels either.

Ross - I'm actually quite pleased to hear that....about the 456 replacment going back to the drawing board.....

For the next batch of Ferraris I want there to be ABSOLUTELY NO DOUBT that they are the fastest production cars in the world... there are too many cars faster than a Ferrari out there at the moment and although performance (at least for me) is not the be-all and end-all, I want more of it.

retractable hardtop on a 2+2 will be very costly to developp ! But nice nonetheless.

Ross, Ferrari did the same thing whenit was about to launch the 456GT but the BMW 850 came out which was too close for comfort & at a lower pirce of course

am hearing that the replacement has gone back to the drawing board both on style and engine since the sl55 and the new bentley have upped the ante somewhat. don't think we see the new 456 in 2003, and probably not till mid 2004.

Dr. Shelbee,
The car in your pics has actually been around for several months. Everytime I see two-toned paint I think of a Ford F-250 or something like it. Not very becoming on a 456

That is not the 456 replacement, rather a special edition 456.

Forza,

I think it looks best as it is - as a coupe. A retractable hardtop will make what is already a heavy car even heavier. Point in case, the SL55 is 4400 lbs. That's quite the boat. Don't get me wrong, I love the SL, but I think the 456 fills a different purpose. Clearly I'm in the minority here.

I second that vote! Nice car but needs to keep up with the MB. Retactable hardtop is the new "gold standard" in front engine sports cars.

I heard word that the front end somewhat resembles the 360 modena. Yes, a retract roof would be great!

Saw a spy shot of a heavily clad 456 replacement test mule in Automobile. Lets hope it gets a nice retractable hardtop like the MB 55SL
