Yeah, about a week after they announced the new dealership, shop rates went up 30% on just about everything. I will be suprised if they stay out of financial difficulty given the terrible market environment. I have heard on this board that some dealers are selling the new Maser's for less than MSRP. Not good! Regards, Jon

Jon, I believe the Maserati dealership is going up which requires big bucks. Oh, yes, I still want a ride! Kevin |

Kevin, Any idea why he is selling it? I wonder if Ferrari of Washington is in financial trouble. I know the new dealership is going to cost them an arm and a leg, especially with F car sales dropping through the floor. Regards, Jon PS: Email me a week or so before the FOW event to remind me if you still want a ride. |

Jon, I am not 100% sure about the intercoolers, so don't quote me on that. My sources tell me that his 250 SWB is up for sale. I thought I would see it in the Barrett-Jackson lineup this weekend but the website doesn't show it. Yes, I think 1.8-2.0M is about the range for a car like that. Take care, Kevin

Kevin, I knew about the Tubi but not the LM intercoolers and I believe I remember Allie telling me that they dynoed the car at something like 520 or so. More amazing is his silver 250 SWB that he drives. Believe it or not that car is also very fast. I've seen him pushing that car in the rain and going off the track several times. I respect him for his ability but also for taking the car out in bad weather and still running at the limit. Not to mention that it was appraised at over $2 million a few years back. Rob: 2 seconds off the lap record is great. I am curious though because I am 2 1/2 seconds off the lap record at Summit (1:24.09) and have been stuck there for five races. I started out doing 1:28's at the school, then 1:27's at the first races and then eventually down to a 1:26:20 but have been stuck there. Tried everything but seem to be stuck. The engine thing bugs me too becasue I rent a SRF and always wonder if it might be down on power. Regards, Jon

Randy, I just set a personal PR Saturday at TWS with a 2:04.5 in my 100 HP 1st gen RX7. I'll post the video lap when I get it made. I still need much improvement, but they're all little things at this point that will hopefully add up to another second or two. Our class lap record is 2:02.5 and the SM's is 2:01. My car is down on power compared to some though. |

Jon & Tom, Allie's F40 has a Tubi (one cat bypassed) and possibly LM intercoolers. I believe its pushing >510hp vs 478 for a stock F40, but it feels more like 800hp! Allie is a really smooth driver - he's the king of power-on oversteer in the esses!! |

Okay Rob, between your advice and Jon's.. dammit, I gotta do something else. Turning 2:05's and 2:06's after only so many DE events at TWS aint cutting it, seeing as the spec guys run sub 2min laptimes. I've really got to get up to the top of the pyramid of speed, I've worked my way up this far, might as well go for it, right? www.specmiata.com - lots of info on the spec miatas - its run by Karl Zimmerman, my first instructor at TWS. At the time, riding in his SC'ed NSX.. blazing fast. |

I bet Rob can relate to this. I was in a heated battle at Summit Point with three other racers drafting behind me during a regional. I was halfway down the straight (3000 foot straight) when suddenly I saw a ground hog at the edge of the track darting around. For a split second I lifted slightly becasue I didn't know if he was going to dart out on the track. That momentary lift (not even a full lift but a hesitation on the throttle) lost me momentum and the other guys behind me either never saw the little bugger or didn't care. All three passed me like the had 100 extra horsepower and got by in the braking zone. I doubt in the Challenge car that would have happened. Jon |

yeah I figured that- there was just such a disparity between how he pulled away from you on the straights and how you caught up under braking - makes sense that he might have had a passenger and was showing him the cars power but did not want him falling out of the passenger side on the turns |

DES, SCCA is the Sports Car Club of America the largest Amateur and Pro racing organization in the US http://www.scca.org. I usually run at the Glen each year which isn't too far from you but this season I am not going to make it up there so you would have to make the trip to Summit Point WV which is about one hour from Wash DC. I know a guy named Karson who drives a pretty mean 355 Challenge car at the Glen who I am sure would be happy to give you a ride there at an FCA event (Ferrari Club). Tom, the driver of the F40 is Allie Ash, owner of Ferrari of Washington and an accomplished Challenge series competitor. He was driving a stock F40 with stock brakes and shaved tires. He also may have had a passenger with him, I am not sure. In his 360 Challenge he's much harder to catch or pass. Regards, Jon

SRF, the class Jon races in, check out these times from Texas World Speedway last year on the 2.9... http://www.houscca.com/racing/results/2002/0217-2002g5r1.PDF Only a second or two between all cars. This is the long course with about 14 total turns. For example, if you miss the last turn on the oval by just a little, it could translate into a 2 second lap difference even if the rest of your lap was perfect. To be at the top you have to hit all 14 turns near perfect and for 16 laps straight. That's with lapping the few slow cars and everyone behind you trying to pass you and everyone in front trying to keep you from passing. In other words, it's a blast! |

you seem to really come up on the f40 under breaking but he loses you on the straights. I assume he either had some stock brakes or you were more compentent - did you know the guy? |

John, i clicked on one of the links and i got a fatal error- had to start AOL all over again; maybe you could show me in person... Seriously, all this talk about racing is making the leather on my gloves wrinkle- what is SCCA...? There's actually a lot of terminology that you guys have used that i don't understand... Do you fellas ever have events where just anyone can come and watch and ask questions, etc...? |

Thanks for the positive feedback. As Rob can probably attest to, you learn more in one season of racing than you do in 5 years of track events. Track events are great fun and provide a safe and economical environment to expand your driving limits at your own pace. For some of us that's good and other's not so good. I had a tendency to learn things slowly and also a bad habit of not trying to improve my driving by getting outside my confort zone and trying new things. The fact that I had a relatively fast car meant I could sometimes keep up with better drivers in slower cars. The beauty of racing, especially in a spec class, like Rob and I race in (SRF and Spec RX7), is that everyone has mostly the same equipment. Talent makes a huge difference. In my first full season of SCCA racing I was forced to take new lines, race and qualify in the rain, left foot brake and most importantly with a 105 hp SRF, to keep my foot to the floor no mattter what. This more than anything improved my driving. I had to learn extensive car control in the spec car and learn to drive it on and over the limit. Things you can get away with in a 3000 pound street car with 400 hp don't work in a underpowered spec car. If you have to lift at all, your whole lap is blown and it'll take another whole lap to get back up to speed. One season of SCCA cut nearly 5 seconds off my lap times in the Challenge car at Summit Point and nearly 10 seconds off my lap times at the Glen. When you go to track events the level of experience and the goals people have are quite diverse and this can make some people look blazingly fast and others slow. When you race everybody is fast and the goals are all the same, drive as fast as you can without wrecking and make sure you pass everything on the track and win. In most cases lap times of competitors in equal cars is very close for 80% of the grid. There will always be a few slow folks who just out to have some fun (like track events) but in most cases racing is to much cost and time to be uncompetitive. Most people quickly learn to gain speed or quit. At the last regional race I ran less than 3 seconds seperated the first 18 cars on the grid out of 25 cars. So while I may look blazingly fast in those videos, racing is a whole dofferent environment where everyone is fast. At most regional races I place in the first third of the grid (average 30 car fields, usually place in the top ten) at the only national race I have done so far I placed 16th out of 29 cars. Glad you enjoyed them. Regards, Jon |

Jon is an extremely talented driver! Watch how he nails each apex lap after lap, watch how smooth he is, watch how he tracks all the way out from a turn, watch how precise and under control his late braking is with heel toe down shifts, and even though it's just a DE... watch how confident and composed he his driving around other 6 digit fast machinery. |

I watched these videos last night as I was uploading them. They are awesome and Jon is a very good driver. My favorite parts were tracking in the snow, head to head with several challenge cars, passing vettes and the sort like they were standing still, and then the few times Jon gets passed by a 333, 962, and the Radical. Thanks for sharing these with us! |

First off special thanks to Rob Lay for kindly hosting my collection of track day videos temporarily. Rob spent all night uploading the videos. Not an easy task given nearly 800 megs of footage. Thanks again Rob! Second: these are in .mpg format but are not bandwidth friendly so unless you have a DSL or cable modem they will be hard to download. It may take a while to download them but I think you'll like them. It's all in car video footage taken from my 355 Challenge at Summit Point and Watkins Glen. Other cars included in the footage are 355 C's, 360 C's, a 333 SP, a Porsche 962 (for William), F40, BMW M3 GTRV6 from Europe, Radical SR3 and a NASCAR Style truck and a few other cars. The third video page has some in car footage taken from my BMW Club Racer and a great tribute to Ayrton Senna. This is just a rough site and hopefully in the coming weeks I can put together a nice site and include some race footage as well. http://www.webspawner.com/users/jkofodosf1/index.html http://www.webspawner.com/users/jkofodosf1/trackdayvideos2.html http://www.webspawner.com/users/jkofodosf1/otherstuffvideo.html I had a few problems getting everything to load properly but hopefully you all can access the videos now.
