According to Pete Lyons' "Complete Book of Lamborghini," Trefor Thomas, President of the former Lamborghini Cars of NA, said that the Dino 308 GT4 design was based on the first Urraco prototype. The latter was designed by Bertone's Marcello Gandini, the "King of the Wedge." His wedges included the Miura, Lancia Stratos, Fiat X1/9, Maserati Khamsin, Urraco, Countach, Cizeta Moroder V-16, Diablo, Bugatti EB110, and others. They all share the sense of drama and aggression.
The belt-driven Urraco P250 was a dog, but the improved chain-driven P300 seems well worth the trip.

It is the full sponsoring package for a french watch manufacturer. Could be Swiss actually. They make these funky watches, so the car is all funky.

Sorry I can not get these pictures bigger:

These two cars are from a friend. Tell me you don't like that look.

Both of them are GTR race cars. The yellow one caught fire a few months back and is being restored.

I don't really see that similarity either. Also, I think that angle isn't the best for comparison. Looking at them from all angles, the two cars are really only similar in the way that any two door wedges would be similar. For great photos of the LP5000 go to the official Lambo site...

http://www.lambocars.com/framed/countach/lp5000i.htm

Speaking artistically, a huge difference in the two designs is that the Lambo integrates curves into the wedge. That creates a significantly different profile.

Douglas, yes the yellow one is mine (in the garage). I also have the same rims for my car as the one in the first picture.

Allan, I see alot in common with the LP400 (besides the color), look at the lines, the wedge shape, the ass end of the car, the sweep of the rear. It's Just the Lambo is alot lower and more drastic in its angles, I guess more stylistically refined. I guess you didn't do well in art class? :-)

yep,the lp400 is by far the sweetest of the countachs' but as lambo's go ive always been a muira man...jay,that yellow pic you posted,it's not yours?.i thought your gt4 was yellow?anyway,i like the yellow gt4's the best, black ones are great too!!theres a funky bluegreen one on e-bay right now, lots of scrapes and such.....the gt4's seem to really come alive when those 16" wheels are added,as in that first pic of the yellow gt4.
anybody know anything about the greenish blue gt4 on e-bay at present? :http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2400430449&category=6212

Jay,

I know what your talking about. The original Lambo prototype. I really liked the looks of that one, much cleaner than the countach. And yes, I agree, similar to the GT4.

If you have a picture that would be great.

Guys, don't forget that from the Urraco, GT4 design came one of the great cars of all time, the Countach. I think the original Countach, without all the scoops and intakes, has to be one of the cleanest fastest looking cars ever made. You can definately see the resemblence to these earlier cars.

Bertone is an acquired taste. As a kid I was Pininfarina all the way. After time though, I came to like the Uracco/308 GT4 style wedge that became Bertone's trademark. Try to see that as a style unto itself and not compare it directly to the Pininfarina curves.

It has its own statement. A more aggressive stance for a car, more threatening. Pininfarina was all about sex and women; Bertone is power and men. All that being said, I do like Pininfarina designs better, but I'm glad I got to the point of seeing Bertone as beautiful too.

Dave, you're absolutely right, that is one fugly car... The color doesn't help much, either... It looks like their original intention was make a station wagon, but then ran out of time (or materials)... Holy cow, that's really bad...

DES, if you didn't like the Uracco at first, have you ever seen the ESPADA? I don't know what Bertone was thinking when they drew up that car! To me the Uracco is neat but the Espada is just awful to look at! Just a train wreck of a design. The only good thing about that car is the 12 cylinder engine under the hood. There happens to be one for sale at www.forza.weblobby.com. This thing has been listed there for MONTHS with apparently no takers. Not hard to understand why when you see it...

As a GT4 owner I have to agree with Jay, Bertone designs seem to look much better in person and an appreciation of the designs usually comes after a careful study. The GT4 and Urraco had a marketing competition in the 70's not unlike Camero/Mustang. The Urraco even had an "Italy only" 2 liter version similar to the 208 GT4.
More Urraco info at http://www.lamborghiniregistry.com/Urraco/index.html

This very nice Urraco has been at the Atlanta Italian Car Days for the last few years, unfortunetly I don't remember the owners name.

DES, the GT4 is said to be the best handling/performing of the 308 series cars, and I believe it! I've gone for a scare ride in a friends GT4 that has all the suspension done and it handles like it is on rails! Of course the sound of the carbs helps too!! Mine should be finished this spring/summer.

There was a comparison article in road and track back in 1975 or 76 between the urraco, the maserati merak, and the 308 gt4. The 3 cars were similar in many respects. Both the urraco and GT4 were Bertone designs.

All nice cars in my opinion.

It was just outside Trenton, NJ; Lawrenceville I think they call it. Not too far from where they recently found a body in a suitcase (would like to volunteer my ex-wife) :-)

I like the Ferrari much better. Guy said this car was rare, but might be a story.

Yesterday I saw a Lambo at Maaco of all places being painted.

Model was something like Ui....

Owner said it was a 1975.

It was a 4 seater if the back people did not have legs.

It looked smaller than a 308, but not for sure.

What was this and is it common?
