Marcus...I noticed your eBay auction the day you posted it, and have been watching it great interest...especially with knowing what you've put into your TR (major service, etc.). Sorry to see you part with it, but your reasons are very admirable, and I know you'll find another F-car one day when the time is right. Your ad is first class IMHO...especially the info. from the Forza / TR article.

There is another auction for a grigio / tan TR (seller is Carsschmitt.com) that I've also been watching. Pricewise, it appears to be a good purchase as well (for the year). Plus, it matches my current 308 color scheme, so I guess I'm sort of partial to that particular color combo.

Between your auction and the other, it is very tempting to go ahead and get into a TR now!

Best wishes to you Marcus and your future bride / family!

Lee,
Welcome to FerrariChat. In 1978 I bought the First 308 GTS (red/tan) in the Western US. I dearly loved that car. Enjoy your new baby. It's a great car.

It's simple more cars than buyers.Bad economy.
When the cars ran in the 80's there was so few to be had and they sold in any condition, mileage, maintenance etc.
They made a bucket load of cars since then.
Supply and demand

I was thrilled to see a 348 TS on 4Ferrari.com for $53,900. Yes, Cavallino, I know that's you, and I think that's a fine price for that car. I rented one in Las Vegas from rent-a-vette last September and I've been obsessed with the 348. I recommended the car on 4Ferrari to a fellow enthusiast here in Sevierville, Tennessee, so if someone from up here buys it, I'll send you my address and you can send me 8 quarts of oil or something...!

By the way, everyone, I'm new to this site and I'm thrilled to be here! In a couple of weeks, if all goes well, I take possession of a 1978 308 GTS (red/tan). It's being worked on in a small, conscientious shop that knows Italians. The car has been sitting for a couple of years and has 33,000 miles on it. I'm not thrilled with either fact but there you go. I'm sure I'll have a lot of questions in the coming months as I plan to do minor and semi-major work myself. I just didn't feel up to a major troubleshooting overhaul (clutch, flywheel, valve cover gaskets, water pump, hoses, valve adjust, carb adjust, plus misc.).

Once I get it cleaned up I'll post a photo! Ciao.

Marcus -- Is your TR a non-US version? -- and if so, what about the EPA/DOT documentation status? Otherwise, that's a great ad and a fair price ballpark IMO.

Did you also add the Cavallino to the glovebox or is that stock?

A little off topic... I just listed my TR on e-bay (it is cheap for the exposure you get). Can any give me some feedback on the ad itself? Thanks.

A friend of a friend of mine (yes I know this sounds fishy but its true)
just bought a black 355 Spider with 30K Miles and no records (so 30K needs to be done) for $ 75,000. Yes, this can be verified and yes he has the car and title at his house. So figure another $ 5K for the service and you are good to go. Looks like the Spiders have a new price.

I think used Ferrari prices seem to be coming down because they cost so much to own, so there are more 'bargain' prices. A lot of people buy one and then find out they have outrageous bills to keep it running. These cars fall in to disrepair and have limited appeal in the market when they are unloaded. What kind of 1981 308 sells for $22k? A pristine well maintained example? I think not. How good is a 1984 QV 308 that has sold at $35k? Probably a pretty nice car. You rarely see them sold that high but the ones that do are (usually) very good cars.

I say the used market has become more widely priced, but at least the 308/328's have bottomed. Truly nice 328's still sell for over $40k. 355 and 348 models will continue to depreciate as they're newer cars but like the 308/328 cars, they will find a level and hold it.

Just supposing it was a shed! I would always reserve judgement on price until I saw the car in the metal. Model for model no two cars are the same, most are very different, to many buyers, me included condition is EVERYTHING. There are cars I wouldn't get involved with even at rediculously low prices.

Shame there are those that see an advertised price for a model and they use it to recalibrate their perceived value chip, fickle but inevitable!

When I bought my 348 there was another at the dealer for just 8K UKP less but in my view it was really a car that I would have valued at about 25K ukp less because thats what I would have had to spend to get it cosmetically and mechanically ok for me, but even in that case its chequered history etc would never be reversible

They are indeed. It's amazing how MY96/96 prices for the 355 have fallen. There is another thread discussing how somebody is asking an exorbitantly low price for what seems like a pristine 355 GTS. There are two or three examples on eBay today, that show either 355's or 550's (through the Buy It Now option) priced much lower than what I thought is "market." I chalk it up to a couple of factors (listed in no particular order):

(1) The economy is terrible, and the effects have started to reach the consumer, which to date has been spending freely.

(2) There is a strong concern with what is happening in Iraq and North Korea, and the consequences should a war erupt in Iraq. Uncertainly is casting a pall over consumer confidence and spending.

(3) The winter weather has kept those in the midwest and the east at bay (for now)

(4) There continues to be a large number of US cars that Ferrari is bringing into the US

(5) There are a large number of European cars that are being imported by brokers to try to capture some of the price differential. This has resulted in an even larger glut of Ferrari's in the marketplace.

(6) Some personal Ferrari owners bought their cars when they had much "paper money." When much of that wealth evaporated, so did their ability and desire to keep their cars.

Bottom line: lots of Ferrari's on the market. Results in a better price for you and me. Haven't seen a "buyer's market" like this in some time.

Regards.

I pointed this out once before. The gap between 355 and 348 prices are the greatest among the 308 to 360 V8 series. It's good to see the gap is closing. But I also wonder if any of that SUV back lash could be spreading to high powered 2 seaters.

prices are coming down because the cars are getting older. if i'm not mistaken, cars depreciate.

Prices come down because there are fewer people who can afford one, and they keep delivering 20+ new cars in the US every week.

Do you guys think the prices are falling because Ferrari is becoming to comercialized?(not sure how to spell that one!) I feel that Ferrari with there winning every race, opening stores to sell clothes and toys has in someway removed the mystic that was surrounding these cars for many years. Maybe people are getting sick of them,or their buy more conservative cars because of the way the world is right now. I don't know.

Comments?
