If I remember correctly, the Valeo system was a Ferrari experiment. They wanted to see if it would be feasible as an option on all their cars so they used the Mondial as a test bed. From what I heard, they were disappointed with the results. Supposedly, the system was overly complicated, resulting in major electrical gremlins. There was no performance advantage so Ferrari dropped the Valeo from production.

That's why very few Mondial/Valeo's exist. Yeah, they also cost more on the market because of the "novelty" and the rarity.

Sorry, Ming-- I should have used the word 'similar', instead of 'same' . That transmission was totally some kind of VW contraption.

Hi Jake,

I had never heard about this on a VW. I suspect this might be the same thing as in the Porsche 911 called Sportomatic. I had one for a year and it was quite fun but you could not leave you hand on the stick or else it might easily go back to neutral

Rachel Hunter- model.
I believe she was married to Rod Stewart. ALL his wives look like carbon copies of each other.

Didn't a few early Diablos come with this tranny, or at the very least a prototype was covered in one of the magazines?

I had a VW bettle, in 1968, with the same kind of tranny. I think VW called it the automatic stickshift. When you put pressure on the gear lever ( to shift gears), some type of electric clutch was activated. Power shifting could be performed, but why bother ? Was this the precurser to the F-1 trans ??

Steve Harris in Salt Lake has a red/tan Valeo Mondial T cabriolet for sale. Wants 65K for it!
Says it was owned by Rachel Hunter.
Does that make it more valuable?

Where do you get these Monidals? Are they expensive? I never heard of them before.

I drove one once. FNA had one at WWOC. Stick. No clutch pedal. Strange. If you shifted too fast gears ground. Unlike paddle shifters I kept wanting to use my left foot.

I posted a similar question some time ago, and wonder myself day to day operational driving habits with it.

On http://www.valeo.com/ there's a pdf file - specifically here: http://www.valeo.com/pdf/press/cbw_uk_final.pdf
Just a brief on the clutch.

I've heard about these cars and their 'clutchless' transmissions, and am curious how they work. I've seen pictures and there is a stick like all other Ferraris. Do you simply accelerate, let off the gas, move the lever, accelerate some more? No left foot required?
