I have actually had the chance to work with one in a JBL demo car for the world finals down in Dallas some years ago. (A buddys car was the demo car) I used to compete until my system was swiped in my garage with the alarm on. (they knew what they were doing. Sadly i never took the precautions with my ears and lost about 40% hearing in both ears due to car stereos. I hope the kids today take better care of their ears because it will do some damage.

Pat, As i recall, the "sound" is claimed to be due to using the older 4x oversampling multi-bit (?18-bit?) DAC chipset. The new unit usually use 1-bit DACs that, IMHO, usually sound less than enjoyable. In fact there are still some high-end home audio folks who use the old 4x multi-bit chips in their DACs due to their "sound". Enjoy The Drive, Steven R. Rochlin

Craig, As i recall, JL Audio made an in-front-of-seat subwoofer enclosure. Maybe Modman knows more about it? It is also probably on the JL Audio website http://www.jlaudio.com/ . Hope this helps. Use Bazooka tubes in my Honda Del Sol Si VTEC, though this goes behind the seat (where roof racks would go in the Ferrari). Enjoy The Drive, Steven R. Rochlin

Modman, >>>..I used to judge cars in IASCA for sound competition and built cars that placed at national events back in the days...<<< Wow, me too! Been to busy to even consider helping Terry Miller with his ventures in the past few years. Was, and still am, good friends with Bill Burton. Small world eh? As you well know, the Alpine used the older, better sounding DACs and they were great. So was the Nakamichi back then, but DARN they had a horrible reliability problem :-( . Using older Nak gear in my current Honda and not sure if, and what, to do in my '85 308QV that will arrive here shortly. Will wait and see. Want GPS as i have the Clarion AutoPC in my Honda now (plus Nak 4-ch amp, Nak elect X-over, older and darn good Nak drivers when they made great drivers). Ahhh, the good ol' days of IASCA... I've been building sound systems for years and it is important on the quality of speakers to use and I can say that the majority of brand name speakers don't quite cut it. ADS and Focals are great speakers but make sure you have plenty of power for headroom that is the key for clean sound output, lack of power leads to distortion and when it comes to amplification most brands will work fine as long it's not super generic. Speaker wires are more critical than preamp wires as you can notice a sound difference. Sub in the front compartment will greatly improve the overall sound system which the Ferrari lacks greatly. If you never heard one done up properly, you don't know what your missing out on. If you don't have it set up right it's like driving your 348 on 2 cyl. - no joke it's a huge difference. There are very few cars that I've heard that I can accept, most were designed for show which sounds crappier than a boom box and these cars were demo cars of large manufacturers of course minus the sub response. I used to judge cars in IASCA for sound competition and built cars that placed at national events back in the days. If you can get a hold of an Alpine 7909 you have one of the best CD players ever built on the planet- over 8 years old and still worth over a grand if you can find one used. Most CD players are junk in materials and some work fine but not made to last, but was made that way for consumer marketing. Hope that helps out.. |

Funny you should say, Martin... I got a 5yr warranty on my speakers just for that reason... I figured I'll probably go through a few speakers just trying to hear the music over my Challenge Exhaust!!... LOL But seriously, the new stereo is working out great... the custom box I had built looks very factory and produces very decent sound. The speakers have very good clarity and good mid/high ranges. |

LOL Byron, you upgraded the stereo? You will go deaf in a few weeks if you try to override the sound of that muffler The best sound system you can put on a 348 is to buy the factory Challenge Exhaust. You get suround sound V8 !!! |

Check this link... http://www.ferrarichat.com/discus/messages/21/186958.html?1041985722 I upgraded the stereo in my 348 as well... I can refer you to the right guys if you are interested. Others have recommended Paris Audio, Focal Speakers, McIntosh Amps... but to stay under $2k, you might want to try others like Alpine, Eclipse, etc. |

I have an alpine head unit with a 6 disc cd in the bonnet. I have a small tornado amp in the bonnet and focal speakers behind the original door carpets with crossovers & tweeters behing the air vents. The improvement in sound quality is superb although could possibly do with a little more bass when playing dance music or with the roof off. Total cost approx 1400 ukp. |
