Dan, I now have the whole story on both cars. Some of it came my way confidentially so I'd rather not post all of the dirty details here on a public forum. Give me your email address and I will forward it to you.

For the rest of you who are curious, it basically works out like this:

Bierman's car is not 2301GT or anything even close. It is based on a 250GTE of unknown chasis #.

The other car (the one in this ad) most likely contains some components, and possibly even the chassis, of 2301GT.

Wayne,

Thanks. Sorry for the lack of response earlier, however the sources of inquiry aren't all that credible (I'm very new to this). The car did seem to have a bit of an interesting story, so I figured if anyone could tell me, you could.

Keep up the good work - it seems like it might be more mysterious than we originally thought.

Dan, I put the question regarding this car's provenance out to "the ones who know" and received several responses. Apparently this is one story that has somehow managed to pass under my radar up until now.

It seems that Guus Bierman of the Netherlands owns a yellow 250SWB that he claims to have been built on the chassis of the wrecked 2301GT. Supposedly he couldn't find anyone to rebuild the Cal Spyder body so he put a SWB berlinetta body on the car.

By the same token, this Swiss car has reportedly been built on remains from Pierre de Siebenthal's junkyard (purchased from several different owners) that are somewhat more likely to have come from the original car. The ad, however, states that de Siebenthal sold the chassis to Alain Cheneviere and makes it sound as though it came complete with the wrecked body still attached, though missing the engine. I think it might represent the car's history as much cleaner and clearer than it actually is.

I'm fascinated whenever I come across a new story like this! I will continue to dig around and see what comes up.

Dan, as far as I know, the description in the ad at carclassic.com is accurate. At least I don't have any information to the contrary. I'm curious, what are some of your sources regarding the conflicting stories? If they have any credibility, I would be interested to do more research on the car and report my findings.

The Ferrari Registry doesn't have 2301 either. Sorry. Very close though, has 2299 and 2303, but no cigar.

Mr. Ausbrooks,

What information do you have regarding Chassis number 2301 GT? I believe the car originated in the hands of Prince Victor Emmanuel de Savoie os Switzerland, but then from there, there seems to be conflicting stories about the car, the accident it suffered, and the fate afterwards.

Thanks in advance,
