Al LaPeter, i'll bet you could pry a sufficient number of 'wear indicators' out of JRV if you'd just pony up for a plane ticket for him and some $$ for his time...seriously, if you end up in a strange town without a recommended person to eyeball the wheels, flying someone in may not be as wild as one would first think. 355 pricing could warrant the extra $$, plus might scare off bozos if you let them know you wanna fly in a heavyweight to back you up. |

>>>There are hundreds of clues but to try and put out the info to such clues, well its like giving someone the teachings of life in some respects, you either know or you don't and if you have to ask you probably never will be able to tell and should entrust this to someone who can tell for you. <<< Completely agree, great assesment of how indept the search for clues to the 'real story' is.

"look for the condition of the car. In and out. Don't worry about the miles on a car and don#t worry about if they are true or not. If the car shows abuse don't buy it, if it is perfectly clean and has low miles than this is likely the truth." Couldn't agree more. Mine has v'low miles (3k) but when I bought it absolutely EVERYTHING about the car added up to this view (pedal rubbers, brake rotors/pads, colouration of calipers and fittings, wheel condition, without being so bright as to have been just painted, complete interior, all switches/handles etc, windscreen glass, side window markings from the ups and downs, all front light lenses, original paint bonnet mirrors, tyre wear, even things like the smell. All things add up to the big picture. Regarding paint, it is almost always possible to tell when paint is not factory original, from overspray or disturbance of fittings that would be tampered with to get to parts for refinishing, sometimes even if its finish is TOO GOOD! There are hundreds of clues but to try and put out the info to such clues, well its like giving someone the teachings of life in some respects, you either know or you don't and if you have to ask you probably never will be able to tell and should entrust this to someone who can tell for you. Whilst looking for my car I looked at many other 348's, some with so say 25K-30K miles on the ODO which had in my view actually done very much more than that! (Having owned other performance cars with up to 70k miles I could tell)

This proves once more that a high miles car at least has the true miles displayed. You will get 15,000 Miles on a 1979 308GTS by just pushing it from one side to the other in your garage over the 24 years! Al, look for the condition of the car. In and out. Don't worry about the miles on a car and don#t worry about if they are true or not. If the car shows abuse don't buy it, if it is perfectly clean and has low miles than this is likely the truth. |

The way I look (and this is only on cars with some mileage) Look at rotor wear.Compare it to rotor wear on known mileage cars. I uncover 308 fraud a lot that way.Of course rotors can be changed. But if rotor was changed at 30k or so Why? Other than that and pedal wear no one can say for sure.I saw a 308 a year ago over in Flemington Nj. claiming 15k the rotors had intense wear and the pedals were all worn off. Didnt buy car. BUYER Beware.Especially now with the 355 and 360 prices falling and people trying to get out fast at top dollar. |

>>What are the wear indicators that are almost never renewed, pray tell??<< Now if I made that common knowledge the con-artists and scammsters would know what else to disguise, now wouldn't they...;-).. Rules of the Used Ferrari Market: Rule 1 1) Buyers Have Definate Ideas about What they Want & What they Definately Don't Want. Rule 2 2) Find (or create)that Product. My Procedure for Used Exotic Inspections: 1)Treat "EVERYTHING" I've read, heard, or been told about Mileage, Condition, Service History with 100% Skeptasism. 2) Read the product like a Book and Let 'it' Tell it's Own Story. |

I do not think an odometer coupling can just 'fall off'. It is a fitting coupling with a snap together sleeve. I would say 99.99% this coupling could not disconnect on its own. |

I have read the numerous past threads on the subject of odometer fraud. I am thinking about a 355 but may wait since I am a waiter for a 360 or ??? From reading the past threads, one can easily disconnect the odometer and/or spedo on a 355 or 360. Buyer REALLY beware. I know visible condition could be one indicator. Could a good Ferrari mechanic tell if the odometer coupling "fell off" or not. If I buy a new car, I will always know the true milage. This seems like a scary proposition. Part of me just says wait and enjoy my C4 Cab. TIA |
