Thanks Steve for the Renovo info..I went to the site and ordered the kit. The kit was a little over $100.00. I"m hoping it will do a little better job than a $7.00 bottle of RIT. I will let you guys know how it worked out. |

Hi Tom, I tried about three of four diffent products; it was some time ago and RIT is a branded/ popular dye. Charles writes he had great success. I personally did not. Certainly, one could try to dye, and worst case: replace. Two step approach. Check with a sail maker is my best .02 Tom. |

Zach: I dyed the top on my mondial cabriolet and it came our great! I used RIT dye. 1) Cover your entire interior with plastic - to prevent the dye from dripping on the seats, etc. 2) Mix the dye according to instructions. 3) I applied the dye with a paint brush and made sure the top was really saturated. 4) I rinsed according to instructions. 5) A near new looking top was the result (before it was 18 years old and looked it). 6) While you are at it, do the top cover too (the piece the covers the roof when in the down position). |

Hello Tom, I have tried spot dying a black canvas top before and that did not meet my quality. It sucked quite frankly. Only cure, for me, was to replace the canvas. If I was to attempt a home repair again, I would definity remove the top from the vehicle and possible..possible from the top mechanism. Perhaps a sail-boat sail maker could assist with a type of dye that would work. Maybe they could dye and dry and test the top while on the mechanism while also taking care to protect the headliner and any seals/ foam in the mechanism to canvas. My thoughts are that if dyed on the car, the dye could run off at first wash and be a pain to clean off the paint. I just wanted to get a reply to you; I hope it is of some assistance. |
