Actually, slicks with a little tread still handle better than full street tires in the rain, but not full slicks. First time I went to slicks I felt like it made the drive more boring, you can toss the car more with street tires. You just feel so confident with racing tires, but you'll also have a harder time knowing you're at the limit... but that's what loosing the back end is for. |

James, I'm not William and Hoosiers aren't slicks (they're DOT tires) but would recommend them anyway. They might give up a second or two to a set of slicks (depending upon circuit) but they last a bit longer and are more forgiving at the limit. That is, they'll give you a little more notice before breaking loose. Good luck. |

Hey William, Would you mind telling me which brand of slicks you are using. I am planning to do my first track event late next week in my supra and cannot decide which ones to go with. I have heard the Hoosiers are the best. I just put new 18' wheels and tires on my car and cannot afford to wreck them tossing the heavy beast around the track. Thanks James |

My suspension is still dead stock although I may ask my mech to dial in a little more positive camber. Maybe next year I'll have Penske shocks all around |

Ooohhh this is getting juicy!!!! Rob, I agree that slicks make a lot of difference, but for the biggest impact on a cars handling, my opinion is that the suspension is where its at. I had a couple of 348 Challenge cars, and in the second one, I had a tricked out suspension installed. Balanced, lowered, tightened up, dialed in. The difference was day and night. I was able to do things with the car that I was not able to, prior to that work. I find the main difference between slicks and DOT spec (ie Hoosiers, BFG) tires are of course the grip. You can slide and drift the DOT tires around much more easily than with slicks. Its a bit like being on ice skates, as opposed to being on a rail (slicks). The issue with slicks, is they give the novice a false sense of security, while giving almost no sense when they are going to let go. You get the feel of the limits of the slicks after enough experience with them. William does have a valid point with the weight, as a TR is pretty heavy, and not as well suited for a tight track such as Lime Rock. Pocono is a different story, except for the tight infield section. As far as brakes..... at Lime Rock, I don't use them for anything other than turn 1. The Lime Rock event is going to be a blast. We are expecting 80 or more cars at the event. See you all there!! |

I was just remembering a story about J.M. Fangio (the original). Another person racing with him was having problems "setting up the car". He saw how fast JMF was going and asked if JMF would drive it and tell him what to change. After a lap or two, JMF was going as fast in the borrowed car as he could in his own car. Suprised by that, the person asked JMF what he had done. JMF responded "more gas, less brakes"..... |

actually Craig, u DO need bigger brakes to get around the track faster, this gives u a shorter braking zone, so u have less time braking & more time accelerating thus, lower lap times |

William: I don't think you need brakes to go faster.... |

u faster Challenge guys have to give me a handicap cus u have like 1000# less weight & way bigger brakes. So I'm gonna shoot for 1:01 & change |

William, I love how slicks make a night and day difference, I think thier the number 1 thing for improving a car's handling. Have you run slicks on any of your other cars, at least your 308 GT-2? Keep us updated. |

Ooooh Baby, this rules, I'm gonna kick some major but at LRP Aug 3-5 with these babies. I pulled a 1:05:20 last time at LRP on road tires & I know I could do a 1:03:90 on the road tires but with the slicks I think I can see a 1:01:00 right away. Too bad there will b no Vipers at LRP for me to munch on, I guess I'll have to pick off some of the slower 355 Challenge cars |
