I've heard the same thing. First is only needed from a dead stop. 2nd to 3rd is good, I don't think that 4th to 5th is a major concern.

BTW, thanks again to Mike Charness for the tip on the knob...I got mine for Xmas.

I heard that also, regarding the racing and not using 1st. I guess they did away with that on anything with a 6speed like a 360.

I read the same thing that Tom said, you would not use 1st or reverse while racing, so this pattern makes 2-5 available with the least effort and especially it puts 4-5 on a straight line.

I can't remember but think it had to do with racing and shifting between 2 and 3, 4 and 5th being lined up

On the topic of shift patterns, quick quiz to see how smart we all are. Why does ferrari use that pattern rather than a conventional one? Ive heard the reasoning for it but not sure if its true. Anybody care to guess?

That's a design I made up, what someone in our Ferrari group called "The Charness Harness". You can see details at

Okay - well then I will get one of those little price stickers like they have at the grocery store and put the price on my shift knob just to convince myself it is worth it - Hmmmmmm - better not do that as my wife may see it and decide to balance the check book?? You know the story - you spend $260.00 on a shift knob, she spends $260.00+ on an outfit - POOF the checkbook is balanced!!

Sorry Johnny -- I was in the same boat, and worked to convince the owner of Team Voodoo to make knobs for our Ferraris similar to those he makes for Miatas and other cars (and his quality is really top notch), and to have the pattern engraved as well. It did take some convincing, as he had previous made a stand against engraving his shift knobs since he personally prefers the perfect smoothness... but he's a Ferrari lover himself (though he doesn't own one) and finally bowed to my badgering. He also wasn't sure there would be a market, so I promised to buy up any he made that didn't sell if it turned out to be a bust. But since I "approved" his prototype a few weeks ago, he's sold several dozen of them already!

Mike - you make me sick!!!:-):-):-) I recently paid $260.00 dollars for the Ferrari Shift knob because I could not find one with the pattern engraved!! - And now I see your 308 with a $35.00 shift knob that looks as good if not better than the OEM! I think me will go and polish my knob??

HAHA Tillman, you are right on! After a nice long weekend in the Ferrari, I find myself starting off in 2nd in the prelude for a day or two!

Tom, no, that's just the way it came from Voodoo. Eventually I guess I might need to polish it, but it's surprisingly resistant to fingerprints.

No problem with slipping... it's actually a better, more comfortable, heftier grip than the lighter original stock plastic shift knob. It's also slightly larger -- it's the size used in 355's and 360's.

Tom -

It is impolite to ask another man if he polishes his knob.

Mike.. Do you polish your knob to keep it so shiney? Does you hand not slip off your knob when pulling through the gears?

Thanks Jim. I'm still amazed (and pleased) that we've finally found someone who doesn't overcharge us just because they know the part is for a Ferrari!

By the way, that's my QV that Bob uses (same picture as below) on his website to show the knobs.

328 is the same pattern also.

If you drive the Fcar enough, it screws up your head in other manual cars :-)

Is the gate pattern for the 5 speed transmission on the 308 the standard H layout? First in the upper left, second right below it? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.
