Jeffrey,

Yes the reserve on these cars have not been met yet, but if you scroll down and read the description of the cars you will notice that on a lot of them there will be a price that the owner/dealer will sell the car for. And the prices are very low.

I have actually purchased several cars on ebay including 2 NSX's and a 355 (see more about the 355 here: http://www.ferrarichat.com/discus/messages/21/196213.html?1043587513 )

The key is to make sure the buyer will allow you to do a pre-purchase inspection *after* the auction ends. Rarely is there enough time to get the PPI done before the auction ends, and even if there is, you probably want to make sure you win the auction before you go spending $400 on a PPI.

Most buyers will allow this and you can agree that if something major is found that the transaction won't take place, or they'll fix the problem. This has worked out for me quite well so far.

Bart, that's called having 'shills' in the bidding audience, and yes, that can/does happen on ebay.
I've done a lot of buying of musical instrument stuff on ebay(lot cheaper than Fcars, but still interesting to watch how it works on ebay), and a few items to consider:

* feedback - new user, '0' feedback, possible problemo here. OTOH, lots of feedback, positive feedback, look at their previous buy/sells, etc., helps provide a probably decent profile.

* they still have to pay ebay. Now, granted, that's a small percentage, but they still have to pay, even if auction is shilled and no sale.

* they presumeably still have a car to unload, so if the car shows up again & again on ebay, sumpin's probably shifty here. Hard to hide in this regard.

* if not ebay, then where? Most of the mags have quite a lead time, newspapers are limited area, word of mouth kills a shifty seller, etc., etc., etc.

So, ebay does have it's limitation, but it's still the only worldwide instant venue for peddling stuff, and in that capacity does give a different twist to the car biz.
I do agree that this should not be the sole place to shop around, but just one of many...

I think Ebay is a great way to expose your car to the public. I think most sellers "meet" buyers through Ebay and the sale is consumated later. I can't imagine anybody buying any car site unseen.

i have never bought anything off ebay so i don't know the procedures, but if a price is below where i want to let a piece of merchandise go for, could i have my wife or another login name outbid so i take it off the auction? since ebay doesn't handle the money, who would know? wouldn't this arrangement distort price tracking?

ex. i post 90tr for auction, bids come in no higher than $50K. i say no way and have my wife bid $55K so i keep it. data would show a transaction at $55k when there trully hasn't been one. am i wrong?

No, my car isn't up for sale and there's no ego involved. I just don't trust ebay as an authoritative source and I don't really accept them as a record of actual transactions.

Do a little research and look at the amount of crime directly linked to ebay. A dentist in Arizona recently told his story to major news outlets regarding how he is out $55k as a result of an ebay scam on an 02 M5.

Now I guarantee that someone out there will say "02 M5's go for 55k" because they are going to search his auction as being a closed and successful auction. Will anyone ever inform them that the guy was actually robbed? Probably not...

Honestly, I'm just very wary when it comes to Ebay and I think they've been assigned too much credibility considering they do nothing to verify the integrity and veracity of their auctions outside of posting "buy at your own risk". Also, I'm not saying this is a bad thing or that Ebay is at fault. They are what they are - a buyer beware auction site electronically linking buyers and sellers with no implied liability.

Well, until something better comes along, ebay *does* provide a service no other venue does - it provides a way to check actual transaction prices. The problem with FML, Cavallino, etc, etc, is that those are always 'estimates'. Even if by 'in the know' 'authorities', these are not necessarily current or accurate. I'm interested in ACTUAL results, not the fluff, not what some fast talker pawned off on somebody who didn't know better, etc.
Is ebay perfect? No, but at least we have a chance to see *some* transaction prices, amongst all the buy-it-now, reserve, cancelled, etc. types auctions.
So, until another venue comes along that records actual $$ changing hands, ebay will continue to be one factor in determining what Fcars are worth.

Is worth remembering that if something is up for sale and doesn't move, there's only *one* reason:

price.

Are some high end used car dealers crooks? Of course.

Are some Ferrari dealers crooks? Of course. Don't believe me - read some of the posts.

Are some ebay sellers crooks? Of course.

Are there honest sellers in all three? Of course.

Mark, it sounds like you have an NSX or other car for sale. Or someone whos ego is tied up into how much their car is worth.

Does one have to be more careful on ebay? Yes, but one has to be careful everywhere.

Does ebay take longer than some other means? Many times yes, but not always.

Is it possible to get a similar 355 Spider to a dealer $140,000 to $120,000 for just $80,000? Definitely. Will it take some more time and hastle? Probably. How much extra time and hastle are you willing to spend for a savings of $40,000 to $60,000?

At the rate we are going, I just wander how long before 355 Spiders break $50,000. At our current rate, probably 2 to 3 years.

Many people use a high buy it now price and a high reserve to get people to bid higher and also not to sell the vehicle. They then sell it to the ebay bidders at a lower price to save the ebay commission. I have had sellers tell me that this is what they are doing. So they are selling, just that ebay does not always get the commission. Right? no. Commonly done? yes.

Ebay is probably the world's largest seller of Ferraris. And NSXs.

DuPont Registry has a handful of 355's in the 70's.. Even has one listed at 68k. Someone on another thread just bought a 98 F1 for 75k. So yeah.............

I think lots of those may be good cars, but I agree with the post below regarding the reserve not being met. The "buy it now" prices on a few of those are $100k for 97/98's and a couple of the other listings mention the reserve being over $100k (again for 97's). Is that an amazing deal?

Also, the *one* where the reserve has been met is at $80k and climbing and is the one auction that looks a little suspicious to me (800 number listed, then a "call me" at a different number. Buy it Now at $87k yet reserve already met at $80k. Could be legit, but such a large percentage of ebay ads are scams and BS you have to be careful).

I have to admit I'm getting tired of Ebay becoming this authoritative source for pricing. We get this a lot on the NSX board; people pointing to Ebay ads as a market indicator. But if you weed out the cars that *never* sell and the criminal scams (that ebay does nothing to prevent) what are you left with? Hardly a reliable source of pricing information on high end autos.

Is it possible that some of these might be good cars? I still believe that the economy has caused a softening on all used car prices including F cars.It might start looking like a buyer's market.

How can you say these are great deals when only one has met reserve price? Do cars ever sell on Ebay?

Before I begin, it's true, I don't know conditions these vehicles are in, I don't know their history and I don't even know if its some scam but there are some unbelievable deals on ebay. Below, please find a few that I found just doing a quick search for fun. Even if these cars are not in the best condition (they don't look half bad), like it or not with more and more posts for low priced F-s a trend will inevitably develop. Don't you think?

the above 355 is INCREDIBLE, 10,000 miles and the 30,000 mile service was done. WHAT????!!!

Here's another one, low miles and 30,000 mile service done. same dealership. They love servicing their cars.
