I think the 5 years are what you need to worry about. If it was a 99 or 00 with 15k I wouldn't worry about it. I would just haggle the price down and get it done. |

Doody, my F355 was exactly 5 years old and had only 10,000 miles on it when this happened. We believe the bearing failure was contributed by dirt picked up while driving down a hiway. We surmised that one of the bearings failed, seized and caused the belt to jump time. This was extremely costly to repair as mentioned before. The bearings are subject to failure due to the age of the bearing seals, letting dirt enter the bearing surfaces. If you have a timing related failure it is just as likely it was created by a failed tensioner bearing as a broken belt. |

When I had my 30K service I had routinely replaced all tensioner bearings as well. Some were running pretty bad. Definetely should be done! I would deduct the service cost for that unless it is already reflected in the price. Have it done yourself by your mechanic than trust somebody else. My guy charges $4500 for engine out parts and labor on the 348 30K service. Belts, tensioners seals and shims. The 355 will not need the shims.

Cmparrf40 - can you educate us as to why your bearings were a problem? did something not get checked properly during an earlier service? was it omitted erroneously from an earlier service? did someone skimp improperly on service on the car? any info to avoid a $23K mistake on my car would be good info to have! thanks for the data, doody. |

Chris, never forget that the service on a Ferrari is the most important of all. Just sitting at the wheel knowing that a belt may brake, is not very pleasant and you will not enjoy the car. So, buy your 97 355 Spider and have a major service done by you. Never trust sellers' words.

Chris, yes you need to do belts. In addition you need to change the bearings in the tensioners. A bearing faliure will lead to a belt failure, I can show you my receipt for the damage caused by bearing/belt failure on my F355. About $23,000. Have the service done! Chris |

chris - the belts are not generally done along with the 15K. not only might it need the 15K, but many (most? all?) mechanics will tell you it needs its first engine-out service (the 30K, which includes all the belts), at five years old. doody. |

Looking at a 97 355 Spider, 15K on it. Hasn't had the 15K service. Do the belts need to be done at this level? Thanks |
