FYI I also have a set of the new aluminum rims in stock if you need. But check my website (www.sodacoms.com) look in the tech section for the info, you should check with your local dealer if it is needed. They should fix it for free. But if not... I got a set.

The failure on the 550 wheels was an aluminum bushing that was pressed into the bolt hole. This is what would develop cracks. The new wheels are redesigned and do no have this pressed in bushing. The F512M Wheels also had a recall. This was because they were a 3 piece wheel and were prone to leaking air. The updated wheels use a different type o-ring around the outer botls I believe. |

FYI-- If you go to Dave's sodacoms.com website, click under technical, there is a listing with the affected VIN's, and the fix.

fwiw, i believe the last of the 1999 MY production had had the switchover on the production line. so some 1999s are fine (eg: apparently mine was fine - 06/99 production). as teachdna says - fona will give you the s/n cutoff. please post it here for the next guy! doody. |

On a side note, were F512M rims recalled as well? They too were mag wheels...so I guess they too would of had problems.... ...just a thought. |

All 550 mag wheels were recalled and will be replaced by the Ferrari dealer at no cost. If you suspect you have mag wheels you should have them inspected immediately as hairline cracks were found developing around the bolts and could cause catastrophic failure at moderate (for a Ferrari) speeds. Whenever purchasing a 550 on the secondary market you need to check to make sure that the recall was done. If it wasn't you should call FoNA with the VIN to make sure that the car is eligible for the recall. If you have to pay for it yourself, such as might be the case for a "gray market' import, the cost can be substantial- from $8-10,000.

The magnesium wheels recall are for Maranello 1999 and older. They are replaced with the aluminum. Since the magnesium showed crack radiating from the bolt, Ferrari made a recall to replace them. Since 2000 model year and after the wheels for 550 were made aluminum, therefore no recall is necessary |

Gene, I remember a post on this not too long ago. Someone also posted the link to the details of the recall. I'll see if I can find it in the archives, but it's somewhere in there if you want to search. By the way, I remember they were recalled however...I think because of them being prone to chipping near the lug holes and their poor resistance to corrosion. |
