Fuel lines could also start fires, came close for me! I filled the tanks to the TOP, an old hose from the pass. side tank going to the fuel/vapour separator burst from the pressure, left a big puddle at the gas station, which the attendant wasn't too impressed with (how do you think I felt?!). Good thing it was off to the side, away from the exhaust. But then again, the vapours can ignite easily!

Check your fuel hoses, all of you out there!

I say that not all fires are started by a cat, as I bought a burned euro 308 W/O cats. The person who was in the car when it burned said he thought it was due to a leaky oil line spraying on the rear exhaust headers. I have examined carefully and was unable to determine an exact cause, but for everyones sake, please please please carry an expensive worth your while gotta have one rossa corsa fire extinguisher!

I've seen quite a few pictures of burned out 308s & 328s where the fire started in the engine compartment. It's interesting what you say about the cat converter -- they do get very hot. My 328 is a Euro model and doesn't have one, but I've always been concerned about these fires so I carry an extinguisher. Do we know that most of these fires are caused by the cat converter-- I sure would sleep easier if this was the case.

If the oil gets on the catalytic converter you will have a flash fire. I have seen it on a 308, would you like to see the picture?

Wang and cmf are right. Don't wait, have the cam seals, belts and idlers change. The belts because the manual states "alaways change the driving belts when a removal becomes necessary" (Cam seals). There is a long statment telling why. So,
the results of a broken belt is very costly! Lamont

I think you could use this as a negotiation item, especially with the expensive 30k service due. How much is the seller asking?

I wouldn't wait another year if I were you.

I was told that almost all Ferraris leak oil .
A 328( 89) I am looking into buying had a belt change done in 97 & now had 21K miles & 30K service is due in 2002. I could see medium oil
leaks from cam selas & distributor. Is it safe to
drive for at least 1 more year. How do I know whether oil has leaked on to the belts.
