Guys the reason both cars look very similar, because they where both developed in a wind tunnel. After 5400 hours in a wind tunnel Pinninfarina desingers came up with this look of the 360 Modena! |

Hey, if you're gonna pinch, pinch from the best! Both are great cars, and having similar performance goals, it's no surprise they share elements. (there is a sort of commonality that all mid-engine cars end up having. I think it's cool, like we're all in some little club that knows something the rest of the world dosen't. Mostly just never lift in a corner probally...) -Ben. |

The XJ220 made its debut in 1988 and entered into limited production in 1991. Its likely the F1 that borrowed heavily and I'm delighted that the Modena took the styling cue's it did to become the best both cars have to offer, subjectively speaking.

I've been lucky enough to see a couple of McLarens on the road and what struck me about the car is that you actually need to do a quick double take to realise it's a McLaren. The colours that Ferraris are typically bought in means that the you instantly recognise even the smaller V8 models... I've always had a problem with the McLaren - it's just not imposing enough - especially not for the 637,000 it cost when new. Incidentally Ross - I totally agree with you. The design lead that the F1 had in frontal aerodynamics eventually found it's way onto mid-engined Ferrari road cars. |

Jonas that is funny that the McLaren stole the design of the Modena, since the Mclaren was designed in 1989 and debuted in 1993 while the Modena was designed in 1995 and debuted in 1999. What gives? Oh I forgot the round taillights maybe Ferrari took those off the Corvette of the 60's? Its obvious the Modena was influnced by the F1, and so what? They both are beautiful cars, now put down the crack pipe. |

They look similar because they were both designed for aerodynamics, so it is no suprise that they look similar. |

I have a book called "ferrari the legend on the road" and it says on the 360 chapter, that Pininfarina admits to have been inspired on the McLaren F1 for the front part of the car.(lights, air intake ect..) |

No, I haven't said the had patent. But you said that the modena had similarities to the McLaren. And I said it was the other way around. Doesn't matter what year it is. |

jonas i meant current ferraris of those years, obviously i am aware of round light ferraris of the past. but whatever.....i also don't think ferrari has some kind of patent on round lights; they probably weren't even first. but that is beside the point of this thread. i wish i could figure out how to upload some comparative pics..... |

ok, somebody who is better than i am at computers, please collect some photos and we'll compare. jonas, when the mac came out, ferraris were all square back lighted, and round lights are everywhere from ford to vw. |

Resemblence? - What resemblence? It's to different cars? That doesn't look alike at all. If there's anything, the McLaren has stole the round tale lights from Ferrari, and not the other way around. If we were talking about a Saleen, XJ220 and the F1, then we could talk resemblence. That's three cars with almost identical lines. |

Ross, I'm in London at least once a month and always stay at the Park Lane hotel, so I go by that showroom regularly (usually on my way to the colony club to lose some money!). No matter what Jonas says, you're not nuts! I see the resemblence too. Cheers. |

i was in some traffic on park lane this morning, stopped in front of the maclaren f1 in the window, and next to me was a modena. i am probably not the first person to see the similarities between these 2 cars, but side by side like that you would bet that the designers of the modena were looking at pictures of the f1 the whole time they were drawing ! the general shape, the side window shape, the profile, the dual front air intakes, even the tail ! anybody else see this or am i just nuts? |
