Rare Ferrari F-40 fetches more than $400,000 at federal auction

By AUTOWEEK

A rare 1993 Ferrari F-40 fetched $409,000 at a federal auction in Orlando, Florida, in mid-February, selling to a buyer representing an unidentified group of investors.

The car, the last of 19 special Le Mans-edition race cars built with a 760-horsepower engine, was appraised at $650,000.

The Internal Revenue Service seized the car from a Florida businessman who owes $917,000 in back taxes.

I had an offer in at $201,000. I guess they did not consider that one. :-(

But why would you buy one for retail price on a fed auction? Go to the Toy Store and pick one up.

Cavalino has the value for a F40 LM at $375-$475k so it looks like it was in the range. Probably a good price if you were shopping for one but not a steal.

$409 for an LM doesn't sound out of line to me.

409? Wow...who else completely under-estimated the market on that one?? Oh well...

Eric, at first it looks like the distant shot shows the pedestrian being hit on the passenger side, just the opposite of what is shown in the in-car shot. Look again. The Campari banners hanging above are mirror images of what they should be. The distant footage is reversed. It is the same car, same moment, same pedestrian.

Arlie - that F50 is not what Greg's question is pertaining to. The F40 in question is the F40LM which was an IRS sale in Florida.

Horsefly that video was funny. I saw the pictures posted of that some were before, but I have never seen the video. Oh man that car got jacked up. I bet the owner was in a state of shock. This is what happens when you drive on a wet surface. So for those of you that ask if you should drive your Ferrari in the rain, this video should answer your question.
