I spoke to some SCCA people in CT & I think i can run with them, they have 2 classes where I may be able to run. Have not looked into SCCA in FLA yet.

anybody know anything about supercar series ? Thanks

regarding documentation, well the engine is the same block as the 512BBLM so that could help

William,

You're going to have a tough time getting the car classified in SCCA. The only class you might be able to get it in is ITE and this will depend on which region. Some regions run ITE like a "run what'ya brung" class while some like the DC region require you to document that the car has competition history in a race series. To my knowledge the TR has never been run in a competition series except for the UK Challenge and that series is not on the SCCA list.

Also in ITE you're up against some fast machinery including Busch and Winston Cup cars not to mention a whole host of Trans Am cars some with well over 600 hp and weighing in at 2400-2600 pounds.

Best bet is NASA or ERMA.

William,

I doubt you will need Lexan glass. I would assume you are taking the side glass out of the doors to reduce weight and then your just left with the tiny rear side glass (could replace them with Lexan) and the rear section.

You wouldn't want to replace the front section even though its weight is substantial. Lexan glass is impossible to clean, scratches easily from rock chips, and fogs up pretty bad. Most defogging systems don't do much for Lexan and other products that are similar.

Most race teams that use Lexan or the like on the front of the car replace it every race or in the case of some NASCAR teams put huge tear offs on them similar to what you use on a helmet. During the race they just tear them off the car.

Just curious how you are planning to pare down 1300 pounds. The interior might save you 200-300 at most. Are you using any carbon fiber or kevlar for the body panels?

See you at the track.

Regards,

I want to run the car in SCCA, possibly EMRA, NASA, or Supercar, wherever it would be most competitive. Anybody know a sponsor intrerested in footing the bill for a year or 2 ? :-)

Silver orange & black are my companies colors so thats how the car will be unless a nice sponsor wants to pay me $150k + to repaint it :-)
The cage is massive, ties into front & rear suspension

I got this car cus I was in my road 512TR doing 170 mph at pocono down the back straight thinking that it would REALLY suck if i hit anything with no cage, fuel cell, or fire system

william-

here you are:

The following are retailers:

http://www.racingshields.com/

http://www.percyshp.com/speedracwin.html

http://www.enteract.com/~proglass/pricing.htm

and these are general information:
http://www.darkhorseracing.net/safer_at_any_speed.htm

http://www.polymerplastics.com/transparents_lexan.shtml

and, here is a page on working w/ lexan:
http://206.186.16.106/technical/tables/lexan_workingwith.htm

also, about the cage, i didn't mean to imply that yours was inadequate, just that from the angles in the pictures, i couldn't really tell how far it extended, and how it formed in the rear. the doors look good, and, the car in general, looks like it'll be one hell of a track car!

regards,
hubert

ps- are you going to keep it silver?

PSK as for Colin, well he always said that Enzo built the worlds fastest trucks :-) Colin sometimes built his cars too light, so light that th edrivers would be endangered or the car would disintegrate before the finish line.

The frontal area is increased a small amount but it looks good & the weight has been chopped considerably, its still no Lotus Elan but I bet I can get her to dance :-)

Hubert the car has a Serious NASCAR style cage you can see in the photos, also has a fuel cell. The 512TR is big enough that you can put a nice cage in, the body shop gutted the doors & said they removed about 100# from each door.

As for springs, dont know what rates yet but we are going with Penske shocks

I dont know much about lexan but if you have some sources I'm sure they can explain it to me. Thanks

do you mean FAL lexan? i have, a few, retail sources i could forward you; what is the brand name you're after?

ps- the car looks like it's coming along nicely. what are you doing to stiffen up the chassis, sans cage? x-brace's? anti-roll bars? mid engine layouts have so little cockpit space that a 'full' cage is difficult; what spring rates/shock will you be running?

Bill , you are correct , the black car is the 512 I had during the Forza mille

This silver car was a car that i bought that was previosly wrecked at the Glen where it went in nose first at the end of the back straight. She's almost all better now and i'm sure she's dying to get back to the Glen victoriously

she will be wearing 345/18 on the rears :-)

Ben,

quote:

Psk,

"Surely you could have fitted the wider wheels by making the rims wider on the inside???"

As there is no engine/trans in the car (from the pic) I'd assume these are "rolling wheels" attached in some fashion to move the "carcass" around in the shop. My guess is wider wheels/tires are coming, right William?

-Ben

Misunderstood my question. I realise that those wheels are not the final wheels. What I meant is why make the car wider at all.

A wider car makes the frontal area greater which means more hp is wasted pushing the car through the air. A Colin Chapman no no!!. The smallest car with the most hp/torque and handling will be the fastest ... not the biggest.

Thus I would have not made the car wider myself, but modified the inner rear guards to take wider wheels on the inside.

Not wanting to upset, just making a comment.

Can't wait to see it when its finished. Like the absence of the cheese graters. Was the black one the car you had on the Forza Mille? And, what's the origin of the this one?

Can't believe you had to make a TR wider!!!

Colin Chapman would be spinning in his grave ... even MORE frontal area to push through, and man you are going to have one really wide track to make that passing manoeuvre

Surely you could have fitted the wider wheels by making the rims wider on the inside??? ... just my thoughts.

Anyway wild looking car, enjoy.

%12TR weighs around 4300# with 428hp, My road car makes around 460hp and I'd like to see 500 from this one. I think the race car could be close to 3000# so it will have a 6:1 weight to power ratio vs 10:1 for the road car which is already insanely fast :-) Cant wait to kick the tires & light the fires LOL

what was the original weight vs. the weight that it will be when it is completed? looks like you did a lot of weight reduction - should be a beast on the track, awesome car
