The problem that Ferrari has been having selling Maseratis really has nothing to do with car itself. The problem is more a failure of the previous management to fully understand the market segment they were entering in the US. Most of the cars sold by its major competitors in that range, Jaguar, Mercedes, Porsche are leased. They all have aggressive factory backed programs usually based around 36 to 42 months. Being a small company Ferrari turned to Chase to set up their leasing program. The program setup by Chase was and is uncompetitive. It is only good for Chase and actually hurts Ferrari/Maserati. When their competition leases well over 60% of its cars it is easy to figure out why sales are not what was hoped.

I think i read in Road&Track that in 2002 Maserati sold apprx. 800 cars agaist Ferrari's 1200 and Lamborghini's 400. These are all approx figures from memory. As far as problems with 2002 i am not sure but I have been told that in 2003 the Maserati convertible tops will have a glass rear window instead of the cheap plastic one. |

I think the MB SL really hit the Shaguar & the Maser hard, If you dont have a retractable hardtop now , you are nowhere |

I am sure 7 can't be right. 700? However, it does not look like they are selling as well as expected. Considering it was a highly anticipated new item one would not expect they would be gathering dust on showroom floors with factory to dealer incentives to clear them out. I think the price range they are in is a tough one competition wise. You couold buy an M3 and have enough left over to buy a luxury SUV for the price of a maser just to name one possibility. Dave |

i could believe however that they are having a problem moving the maseratis though. i was talking about it with a dealer and they said that they had orders lined up and lined up and they just weren't getting the cars. then all of a sudden in nov/dec they got a TON of cars. of course having a ton of maseratis in new england in the wintertime sucks big time. i hope FSpA does this carefully and right and doesn't screw the marquee. doody. |

I know for a fact that certain dealers have sold more than seven spyders themselves, so i think that what you heard was indeed a rumor |

Was having lunch with some friends yesterday, 1 of them said that Maser only sold 7 2002 convertibles!!!!!!! They probably have 100s sitting gathering dust. Seems the 2003 resolved some problems the 2002 had and everybody knows this but Maser doesnt want to retrofit the 2002 & wants to sell them before releasing the 2003s Could be a $ drag for Ferrari |
