Andrew,
the cars come very well protected and in sealed containers, pretty much ensuring that they are delivered without damage. any final polishing and vehicle check is completed by FNA to be sure you recieve a fine product.
Sorry, but thats about what it takes, maybe sooner if your lucky and they are not too backed up on deliveries.
Also, forgot to mention that the factory is closed for the month of August, so if you car does not leave the factory before they vacation at the end of July, you must add another 6 weeks to that.
Don`t worry, It`s worth the wait.

Best regards and hang on..Jim

Jim you are crushing my dreams there ! :-)
7 weeks is too long !! Do all the cars get scratched on the boat ? and why does it take 2 week to prepare the car for delivery ??

Martin, I figured WW was a commodity carrier. You mentioned Bremerhaven below... the ship that transported our MINI started in Bremerhaven before stopping in Southampton... then on to NY. I take it all exported German cars depart from the Bremerhaven port??? Are high-end BMW's exported in containers or roll-on/roll-off?

Andrew,
Once the car leaves on the boat as they have said about 3 to 4 weeks on the water. then they have to clear customs and get delivered to FNA - (2/3 days). then offloaded at FNA and preped for delivery - depending on their backlog I would say 2 weeks. then delivered to dealer which is 1 to 3 days.
total - 6 to 7 weeks approx.

Best regards, Jim

Isn't there an Italian Ghia show car still on the Andrea Doria since 1956? All you need is a deep sea scuba diving system and a LONG winch cable.

FNA sent me a letter that said my 308 was shipped to the US on 24 Feb 1984. I guess She didn't arrive until about Mar 10th or so.

Clarification--
What was stated earlier is the standard practice, to be delivered to FNA first.

When we were a dealer, we once had a 456M flown over in a wood crate, and delivered via a flatbed to our service dept. We then "broke" open the box, and drove the car out of the box, and it was delviered less then 5 days after leaving the factory. This of course a special situation, that we wont get into!!!

Sorry DES!!! Won't happen again!!

I picked up my 360M at the docks with the owner of the Ferrari dealership. The car arrived straight from Italy (via South America) in a sealed container, with each wheel tied down with marine rope (still have the rope). The car was fairly clean, with only one scratch on the passenger mirror (which the dealer later fixed). I drove the car to the dealer, waiting about two hours for them to inspect and do whatever it is they do, and took it home. It was a great experience picking it up at the dock, as I know exactly what the car has been through since arriving on the island.

Bob,
the problem with Wallenius is these are Roll On-Roll off ships and once you see them oad and unload you will not want a Ferrari go through their "service". You can find major damage on new cars that came in this way as well from time to time. I remember I had a Miata that they banged up pretty bad because they run up and down the ramp of the ship. Pretty bad stuff. Like Valet if you know what I mean!

Container makes much more sense.

Tom--

According to my Intel, the cars are still sealed in the metal containers UNTIL off loaded at FNA.
One of my old co-workers used to work there, and said it is a great place to car watch, his test drive on the PPDI was up the Palasades Parkway (?) I think, I am left coaster so, not 100% on that.

WM is correct...as usual...

F-cars are taken off the boats in the containers and shipped to FNA from Port of Elizabeth. There they are off loaded from the containers, and then the P.P.D.I (pre-pre-delivery-inspection) is done. Then H.C. comes and takes the car to you dealer for another PDI.

Mazers-- Are off loaded the boat and out of the container at the dock, and the PPDI is done my an independent company at the port, and then the cars are shipped direct to the dealer without going to FNA/MNA.

But with F cars, after they clear the port, don't they go to FNA where all the little dents get knocked out, and the car gets fiddled with, whilst awaiting Horseless Carriage, who eventually delivers the car to the dealer... so boat time is not the only issue, particularly if the car got up en route, nest pas? Isn't pickup in Italy more difficult because of the hi-theft rate of hi-end autos and the difficulty of insuring against this?

We had a MINI Cooper S on order and just took delivery a couple of weeks ago. MINI allows you to track the manufacturing and delivery status from the UK. In our case, the ship took 11 days to hit US shores once it left Europe.

BMW and MINI both use Wallenius Wilhelmsen shipping lines (car carrying ships). Maybe Ferrari uses them as well? Click on the link below, click on "Auto" then insert the last 7 digits of the car's VIN... at least that's the way it worked with our MINI. It was actually a lot of fun tracking it. Good luck!

On the way New York to Bremerhaven it took between 8 to 10 days. I don't know where Ferrari ships out from.

Might take delivery in Italy, have a nice trip through Tuscany and then have the car flown to the US.

2-3 weeks. sometimes the boat goes to South America first then to the U.S. Also, the hurrican season can add a few days to the trip.

2-3 weeks unless it's an Enzo which takes a little longer as the longshoremen like to drive those around and street race them in Newark :-)
