I think it will handle more traffic better than the current software. That's one reason I am looking at switching. How many times do you get a message that a file is busy on here. I do all the time, that's because it's file based and we're trying to hit the same file at once. The new board is 100% database driven and can handle concurrency.

Rob,

First impressions are that I like it -It is the same as the Z club uses here in the UK

One question...

What is the speed of loading the page when it gets 60+ replies (like f-chat does!)Does it allow you to read the rest of the page without having to load any pictures first of all.

Can we try it and bombard a post to see how it copes?? (like f-Chat!!!)

The IP logging is a good idea - stops any carbon copies!!

Please, no avatars, graphic sigs, etc. I hate having to deal with all that junk on other sites.

The clean format here is why it loads so quickly, and is usable on handhelds.

When it comes down to it, its your fault for having such a beautiful car!

I'm sorry Bill, didn't realize it would be a big deal. I can pitch in for the bandwith we used if you'd like.

Some advice for the future, there are coding that you can use so if someone links to the pictures, they will come out as red "x"s.

Exotic Car Forums, huh.
There is the link. I have wondered for a month now.
My website, which normally gets less than 5 hits per day went up to over a thousand for a few days in January (I think). I reviewed the logs and it appeared to start with a bunch of my pics being posted by a "kenny" on Exotic Car Forums.

I had not shared any of the F-car pics anywhere else but I just assumed someone just ran across them.

The posting spread like wildfire. I believe it went to 15 different car forums before it died down. At least we know Kenny's Exotic Car Forums is evidently a popular place. I just wish you would have snagged and hosted the pics yourself instead of direct linking.

Any other feedback, so far my opinion is FerrariChat.com will switch to this software in about 2 months, but keep the colors, look and feel as close to what's current now.

Matt,

Rob could easily customize it so it looked similar to the old F-chat if necessary. In fact, he could make different styles or 'templates' for people who prefer the old look over the new one.

Rob, autowrench looks nice, i like it... When posting, at the bottom, there's an option to do a poll; in there, it says something about initial options; initially is spelled wrong... That's the only thing i could find wrong with it... Sorry, i'm not a ball breaker on purpose, it just comes naturally... :-)

posted my own clutch/shifting question, too... i might actually learn some stuff from the board... Let's hope it takes off...

just responded to the brake question, and also told my friend about the site who does alot of mechanic work on his 99 camaro SS, and his 74 Nova. He also is an airframe and powerplant technician for airplanes, so if any of you own anything from a jumbo jet to a two seat cessna, with problems, you know who to ask.

Hey Rob, I see a problem already. In order to access some of those V bulletin boards, you have to register, as in, dance through the hoop. In the registration process, you also have to agree to the following:

"By clicking the Agree button, you warrant that you will not post any messages that are obscene, vulgar, sexually-orientated, hateful, threatening, or otherwise violative of any laws."

That would pretty much through a rope around the necks of a good 40 percent of Ferrarichat or more, wouldn't it? (Unless of course, you simply swapped all list members over to the new software without ACTUALLY requiring old members to click on the "AGREE" button. That would make us all feel better knowing that old members had a legal OUT!!!!

Rob, if you have AIM, IM me at captanobvs. The admin pannel is pretty easy to use, its just implementing "hacks" and customizing the script which gets tricky. Everything on my site is custom, nothing is 'stock' anymore. I'm ready to help.

Thanks Arlie, yes, that's a vBulletin board. If you really compare one to one I don't see it being too much busier. The columns and structure of each message are very similar in my opinion. I like the white background and simple graphics of FerrariChat.com, but I can customize vBulletin to have the same look and feel.

In brief, I want the look and feel of FerrariChat.com, with the exception of having a more portal main page. The main benefit of vBulletin will be behind the scenes. It's 100% database driven, so as FerrariChat.com grows there won't be scalability issues. It's also a full company that develops it instead of one individual like the current software. Over time the current software won't be able to keep up with upgrades and if this individual goes out of business, we're SOL. In other words, there is less risk with vBulletin as we move forward with FerrariChat.com.

Rob, I think that V-bulletin software is similar to what they use on the International Scout site.
http://atlas.binderbulletin.org/forums/
The Scout site upgraded its software to that V-bulletin stuff, but they kept the old site on-line at http://atlas.binderbulletin.org/cgi-bin/webbbs/techtalk.cgi?noframes and it seems that most people prefer the much simpler format of their older site. The V-bulletin format just seems too "busy" with too much going on across the screen and the format seems to bury too many topics in too many directions. Ferrarichat seems much simpler, and much better. Just go to the site, pick one of 6 major topics, and you're there.

Jason, I'm not sure why that is there. I guess it's for if you have sub topics, but I don't use it. I could fix it, but right now I'm spending my time exploring vBulletin.

Kenny, I'll definitely need to talk with you. The admin panel is very user friendly. I really don't have problems with that. What I don't understand yet is how to customize the colors and graphics. I also want to implement a portal look and will need to figure that out.

Phew! I finally found this thread! I was looking in OT for nearly 10 minutes. LOL

Anyways, Rob, I was going to ask...

On the front pages, where it says "Page" there seems to be no use for this column. They all say "1". Why not change that row of uselessness into something worth while?

IE: Hit counter. Most forums have a place that shows how many times each thread has been viewed.

Is it possible with the current software?

I will customize the look and make the site more portal like. I would like a front portal view that windows into the main topics, recent messages, recent ads, and etc.

You can customize it to look about any way you want, I guess I would appreciate more feedback on the functionality of posting and viewing messages.

Don't worry, no changes yet, but I'm experimenting with some new software. At the same time you can help me get some traffic going for my new site www.autowrench.com.

So...

1) Go to www.autowrench.com.

2) Give me your feedback how you think the software would work for FerrariChat.com and also any feedback on Autowrench.com itself.

3) Tell your friends about www.autowrench.com. It's purpose is to be a general auto technical Q&A site for the average Jane and John. No traffic yet, but it has to start somewhere.

Thanks,
rob
