Hutch,

Don't forget, you always have the option of cutting the roof out of your TR and making a targa, ala Straman. Not that I recommend it, but it has been done.

OK, it was just an idea, (a lousy one) I'll keep quiet now...

I have a 308GTB Fiberglass for sale. Has no history and needs some minor cosmetic work. I am actually thinking about keeping this baby in my collection. It is one of the 714 Fiberglass built and one of the only 100 US delivered cars with wetsump engine. So it is pretty rare and should apprechiate in value. History needs to be dug up.

Yeah Bruce is a cool guy!! And he wasn't scared at triple digit speeds!!! This year, Eric, put yourself behind the wheel of a TR. One drive and you too will be hooked! The downside of a TR after a 308 GTS is not having the removeable top on nice sunny days. I'll just have to make do.

Ken Ross - I am planning to attend the Reading Show as well. See ya there!

DHutchison...I completely understand the spell that a "TR" puts on you. Last weekend I FINALLY had my first opportunity to try a '90 TR on for size, get a good look at the engine, etc. -- just didn't get to drive it, as it was in the showroom. Needless to say, I'm definitely hooked -- more so than ever before! If the salesman had handed me the keys for a test ride, I don't think I could have left without buying the car -- and my wife would have had to drag me out of the showroom . Wow...a drive in Bruce's TR...what a great guy he is!

Hey Ken Ross - Great picture of you at speed in your profile!!! We could use a nice sunny day to go for a drive (like the one in your pic!!). I'm working my way up the Ferrari line, and the options were either 348 or TR. I decided to get a TR after Bruce gave me a go behind the wheel of his! What a ride that was! I agree that a 308 does have gorgeous lines, but a TR has that wide ass, and the cheese grater sides.
R McNair - I was up in Vermont back in early January for a weekend with my brothers. My brother has been out on the trails with his 600 ZRT triple CAT. I might be going up next weekend 3/7 - 3/9. I'll email you when I will be going up next. More snow is coming!! Enjoy it while it lasts!! After 2000 miles, its apparent that you have been!!

I was surprised by this. I saw a 348 on Ebay with a Buy it Now of $41,900. It this what they are selling for? Seems really low.

Sledding is unbelivable up here this year Hutch, I picked the right year to get a new sled! I've got close to 2000 miles on the new sled just this year. Are you going to be coming up at all this winter? Good luck selling the 308 now that I think about it with the doc. miles and the condition it looks to be in the picture you probably will get your price for it.

Hutch:

Why do you want a TR? Are you looking for more power or performance, or do you like the car better? Personally, I like the lines of the 308 much better than the TR, but the 308 is lacking in the power department. Will you be attending the Reading Concours on May 18th? I will be there.

R McNair - I'm only selling it to upgrade to a TR... I'd love to keep it and get a TR, but am not rich enough yet to do that. It's been a great entry level ride for me the past 3 years. I have many fond memories of her. How is the sledding up in VT?? At least there's plenty of snow this year!! Enjoy!!

Sean:

Here is my input as a 308QV owner. I have been watching the prices of the 308 market for years. The current price for a nice 308QV is going to be at least $40K. Others may disagree with this, but when you look at what the sub $40K 308QV cars bring, it is a bargin. I was offered $46.5K for my car several months ago which I turned down (note - my car is a low mileage Platinum concours car which has had a lot of service performed recently). Everyone thinks that I am crazy for turning this amount down for the car, but I love the car and it would cost me much more to replace it. I also know of two other 308QV's that have recently sold. They were red/tan cars with under 30K miles and sold for $45.9K and $51K. Both were in the Phila, Pa area. The $51K car is a fluke and I would not base the market on this price.

You can purchase a nice 328 for less than a 308QV like mine, but as you and others have stated, the 308QV is starting to become collectible. This is also true of early 348's compared to late model 328's. I do not see the prices going over $50K anytime soon, especially in this economy, but they are currently getting at least $40K.

As to an early carb'd car, I would get either a fiberglass version, or a 1976-77 model. The fiberglass model is very collectible and fast, while the 1976-77 steel cars do not have most of the emissions equipment that the 78-79 cars have. With that said, I would never walk away from a well maintained 78-79 car if the price was right. The 2V cars I would stay away from for the reasons you have already indicated.

Wow, a 328 sold for $34k US...amazing! Was chatting with a fellow at a recent car show who claimed he had first dibs on a red 328 for $30k -- I asked him if he was holding a gun to the owner's head.

Sean...$42.5k does appear to be a little high on the surface, but 308 prices do seem to be climbing again just a bit at present -- at least the asking prices are. Just saw two 308 QV's for sale last weekend at two different locations and the asking prices were between $39k and $46k.

Not certain of your location -- Canada I presume? -- but Ferrari / Maserati of Central Florida has a red/tan 308 QV...just in...and will be for sale just after they service the car. Call Raymond (general sales manager) to inquire, if interested.

For a reference, Martin (F-Chatter here) has a pre-'79 rare glass body 308 for sale around 28k, but it's red/black (I think)...you can check it out at www.4ferrari.com

I would think that an '85 308 QV for around $30k would be a very good deal. About a year ago, the "book" value for this year / model was around $45k.

Perhaps Martin, or others, here who follow the market a little closer can give a little better insight, as these are only my observations.

No mileage I notice. That does seem high unless it's very, very low mileage and perfect. I see good QV's sell in mid 30's like you do; carb cars can also go that high when really nice. Questionable cars sell for high 20's. The early injection cars you don't want seem to go low 20's sometimes but they probably all have issues.

Is anyone else watching the 308 market? I've been watching for about 2-months now and I've narrowed down what I'm going to buy to either an '84/85 Qv, or a 79 or earlier Carb Car. I'm not really interested in an 80-82 car b/c of the lack of power, and the engine problems that can come up if they've not been rebuilt (faulty rings I believe). The car also has to be Red/tan. I know Ferrari's can be other colors, but since this is my first, and after I saw Dan McCormick's (fellow F-chat'r) car over the weekend, I've decided it HAS to be red, and I really like the tan interior over the black.

Now is it just me, or are some of the asking prices just crazy? I've seen nice cars where poeple are asking ~$35K for 84/85 Qv. and below $30 for '79 cars which all seem reasonable. Then I come accross this car...

http://adcache.collectorcartraderonline.com/10/3/6/40056236.htm

$42,500. This guy is dreaming, right? Should I even bother to call the guy?

I've also watched some 328's and the ones that seem to disappear the fastest are going for what appears to be ~$45K. Why would I pay even close to $40K for a 308, when for ~5K more I could get a 328? This car could also have garage queen syndrom since it's obviously not been driven much. I talked with Ferrari Ontario yesterday about a red/tan 328 they just sold with 75,000 KM on it (~46,000 miles). It had all the service performed and tools, records, etc. Nice car, just high miles. The guy I talked with said they sold it for ~50,000 Canadian Dollars (that's about $34,000 US).

If anyone here is thinking of selling, or knows of a car please e-mail or reply.
