Okay I have done some research and beaten Wayne to it (will only happen once) But the driver I was talking about was: Eugenio Castellotti Here is what I found about the incident: While on holiday in Florence, he was annoyed to be summoned back to Modena by Enzo Ferrari to do something about the new unofficial lap record which had just been set by Jean Behra in the latest Maserati 250F. On only his third lap, Castellotti crashed into a small grandstand and was killed instantly. In my opinion that was just totally unnecessary ... plus the '57 Ferrari was not the best ... thus poor guy had a tall order. Pete ps: As you can see I got some of the details wrong, in my previous post ...

There is one drive who I would say gave their life for Ferrari ... but I cannot remember their name (hopefully somebody else can fill in the gap). But this poor soul was called back to the test track because Maserati (must have been '57) had beaten the track record and Ferraris honour was at stake. Apparently this driver had been out at dinner, and had to leave and go back and in failing light attempt to restore the lap record to the Ferrari team ... unfortunately he had an accident and died in a worthless cause, that could have waited until another day ... All the rest gave their lives to the dangerous sport of motorracing ... if it was not a Ferrari they would have been racing something else. Pete |

I have a book with all drivers which ever drove for the Scuderia Ferrari but I really dont like to count all the deaths. The best known drivers who died in a Ferrari were all named by Jeff. Guy Moll also died in a Ferrari I think. Altogether there surely are dozens who could be named... Con saluti cordialissimi, Jens Haller |

Morbid subject, but... Gilles Villeneuve died in practice at the Belgian Grand Prix in 1982. Pedro Rodriguez died in a Ferrari sports car in Germany in 1971. Jacky Ickx is still alive, I don't think he was ever badly injured in a Ferrari. Some others who have died in Ferraris would include Lorenzo Bandini at Monaco in 1967, Wolfgang von Trips at Monza in 1961, Peter Collins in Germany in 1958, Ignazio Giunti in Argentina in 1971, Luigi Musso in France in 1958, Alberto Ascari at Monza in 1955, Eugenio Castellotti at Modena in 1957, Louis Rosier in France in 1956, and of course the Marquis de Portago in the Mille Miglia in 1957. And don't forget Jean-Pierre Sarti at Monza in 1966!! There must be dozens more. |
