That's right, Hughes said the still shots were of a real car. I think they used four replicas for the movie. In the scene where Cameron stomps on the hood, they had to fabricate a metal hood to replace the fiberglass one on the replica. | ||

As they open the garage and show the car, there is a 3-second flash montage containing 5 insert stills that flash by. They are from an actual Cal Spyder and are: Cavallino Rampante in grille left headlight left-side extractor vent Borrani wire wheel hood emblem It's obvious in the stills of the wheel and headlight that they are not of the same car the boys are looking at but it goes by so quickly that hardly anyone will notice. After viewing it with the commentary again, I do remember him saying that the insert stills used in that flash montage were from an actual Cal Spyder when I played the commentary before (a couple of years ago, I think). None of the actual footage of the car itself, whether sitting still or in motion, are of the real deal, however. | ||

Maybe I can help. The references to the type of cars used in the filming are in the commentary while the Cal Spyder is introduced in the glass garage. I know because this is currently my 14-year-old sons favorite movie and just watched the commentary for the entire movie with him. Regards John | ||

Thank you 89Tcab. I knew I had been told by a reliable source that there had been a real California Spyder on the set of the movie and that some still shots were made using it. I, of course, am always willing to accept the fact if I am wrong but I was almost certain that a real one had been used just a little. (Non-moving, of course). | ||

On the DVD with the directors narration turned on, he does indicate that a real model was used for some close up s but that a replica was used for obvious reasons. | ||

The early 166 spyders were nicknamed "barchetta" (little boat). Ferrari, however, recycles names, ie.Testarossa, and this gets confusing. | ||

I am now correcting myself, there have been a few spyders that were produced that fit the description of a barchetta (no top) 206S Fantuzzi Spyder, 250MM Vignale Spyder and so on.. I wrote before I thought, but I have still never heard of a California Spyder ever refered to as a Barchetta. Now that I was attempting to not confuse DES, I have now confussed myself. Anyway, my intensions were good and if you ever see SWB you can be assured that it is a Short Wheelbase whether it is a Spyder, Spider, Barchetta, Berlinetta, Coupe, Cabriolet...........I think!?!?! | ||

I agree however, I must add the 550 Barchetta does have a top not a very good looking top but a top nonetheless But the one off 360 barchetta does not have a top go figure Wade | ||

I am not sure but Barchetta has always meant that there was no top at all, as in the 250mm and 166MM I have never seen anywhere a Spyder referred to as a barchetta. But I have been wrong before. Spyder (at least were Ferrari is concerned) has always been used for convertables or Cabriolets and Barchettas have always been used for cars without tops. I would guess that most literature from Ferrari did not use "SWB" anywhere for either Berlinetta or Spyder. I would bet it was something that enthusiast adopted to describe the chassis length. Anyway SWB or LWB whether you are talking about a Spyder or Coupe is in reference to the wheelbase. That is the answer to DES' question. | ||

I have seen swb denote both. The lwb and swb spider californias are definitely not berlinettas but have had those letters attached to them forever. As with everything Ferrari there is no exact answer. | ||

Wade that is what I thought originally, but it would not make since in the California Spyders. Maybe Ferrari never actually used the SWB nomenclature on Spyders and it was added later by others trying to describe that there were two different versions, Short (SWB) and Long (LWB). Thank you for the correction, but I was trying to answer DES' question regarding "250 SWB California Spyder" and did not want to confuse him by saying it was a "Short Wheelbase Berlinetta California Spyder" | ||

I love that movie. My g/f saw it for the first time a month ago. I forced her to watch it, and I didn't tell her anything about the end. She knows my love for Ferraris, and at the end, when Cameron is beating the crap out of the car, she's getting all riled up saying "What the hell is he doing that for!!?? Isn't that a rare car??" It was kinda funny. | ||

On the trailer that TNN has been running, it states that it will be running all day. I have seen them do this before. One movie run over and over and over and over.............At least this is what the trailer said last night. And Wayne, you are probably right. I had just been told that a real one was used for stills and the donor car for the action shots. But, you and James are the autothorities here. | ||

Bueller?...Bueller?... hilarious movie even 20 years later... the guys wondering if the car is alright and it cuts to a slowmotion shot of the car passing OVER the camerc 6 or so feet off the ground to the tune of STAR WARS' main title theme as it slowly comes to a (painful) landing several yards down the street.... yeah.. i think they used a kit car.... Jere, what time is it on...? i don't have a TV, but i can always run over to my Aunt's house... i've seen the movie plenty of times, always thought it was a classic... The parts where he's driving around in the Ferrari were awesome, but it's painful to watch it go out that back window, down into the trees... (What's SWB stand for...?) | ||

Today on TNN they are devoting a full day to Ferris Bueller's Day Off. It is supposed to include some never seen before footage. Do not know if this will include any additional footage of the California Spider or not. Yes I know the car being driven was a replicar but the movie also included some still shots of the real car. Des, the car that Matthew Broderick drives in the movie is one of the most sought after Ferrari's of all time-the 250 SWB California Spider. Has some great shots and the movie is acutally quite funny. |
